I was ready to have Malik come in after those turnovers, that's for sure. So tired of seeing the ball pop out of Golson's hand when he scrambles, it's really becoming a problem. The OL didn't help today either. We need to move Nick Martin back to the middle, Hegarty has been a complete liability the last two weeks.

Hell, if he's still good enough to play, I bet he can snap even with that wrap they showed. Other centers have done fine with similar hand injuries. Either way, I don't think Hegarty is the answer. Can't have guys just flying right up the middle of our line like today.

Crazy. She sounds like a tough kid -- good luck to both of them.

Way to surreal for me. I can really relate.

That is all I can say, but I may drop them a note.

It's hard to imagine the number of families that go through this every year. I wish her and her family well and I hope Kizer finds some peace in this difficult process.

Anyone have any news, bump?

They were able to remove all the tumor, but she's having trouble moving her left leg below the knee if I recall. Haven't seen an update past that. Otherwise everything went well with the operation.

If anyone was curious, here's an update from Eli on the operation that happened Thursday:

Hi guys! Finally I feel up to blogging a little bit about my experiences this past week.. As DeShone let you all know, Thursday was a long day. After around 17 hours straight on an operating table, I was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at the James Cancer Hospital to spend the night. There they managed me carefully due to all the stress and changes made to my body. I apologize if my grammar is poor or hard to understand. I am sleepy and on a good amount of drugs.

The normal complications known from my surgery are taking their toll, but each day I feel a little stronger. I was taken off my feeding tube, central line IV, and my foley catheter. It is very hard to talk and understand my speech. I tend to have difficulties chewing and swallowing but they have improved and will continue to with time and therapy.

I will need lots of therapy. Unfortunately, as well as everything went during my surgery, I woke up unable to feel and move my lower leg/ankle/foot. Luckily and surprisingly, my brain and spinal scans came back normal, showing no signs of stroke during my long and intense surgery. It may take weeks to a year to regain motion within my leg but I will be working hard each day.

I am so pleased with how everything turned out. We are still waiting on the pathology report from my tumor and lymph nodes but that should be here sometime soon.

Thank you for all the love and support. I can not begin to explain how grateful I am each day.

More updates to come.

Can't imagine it was easy to go through practices and the Blue & Gold game with that operation weighing heavily on his mind the last week.

With DeShone moving up to the #2 quarterback, I thought we should move his name to the top of the discussion along with Everett Golson and Malik Zaire.

Kizer's actions over the past couple of months in support of his girlfriend speak louder than words. He is a class act. He will now have the opportunity to demonstrate his leadership skills with added reps during practices. If anyone deserves a shot to back up Zaire and eventually take over the reigns, it is DeShone Kizer. Let's not underestimate his potential to be the starting ND quarterback at some point in his career. He was a highly rated quarterback coming out of high school, and he will now have increased opportunity to develop under the tutelage of Sanford and Kelly. If he is called upon, I have no doubt that he will be ready.

It would have been a shame that EG took up time that could have better been spent on DeShone this spring, but with his personal issues, this seems to be a "no harm, no foul" situation.

I believe in addition to DeShone being physically and emotionally exhausted for the Spring Game, Mike Sanford is starting to work on some of the anomalies of DK's throwing motion. That will get a lot more attention this summer!

And I can't say that even though I love EG, after his throw-happy tenure at the helm, I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of QB's on the depth chart that are more than willing to run first!

i think with EG leaving it may well be a masterstroke to have Sanford concentrate on being a QB coach first and then gradually pick up the OC reins. ND needs MZ operating as a passer at a high level and Kizer definitely can do with some mechanical refinement. Sanford will need to throw the guts of his time into these two tasks.

Kizer will be fine. He just needs more reps. He's been a clipboard QB for the past year. Now that EG is gone, DK's reps will significantly increase, and that's what he's been lacking the most.

I was really disappointed with his inaccuracy in the spring game. Reminded me of Hendrix on how he buried a couple throws.

But the thing is, he's gotten virtually no reps to this point, and now that's going to change. He has the most NFL upside of any QB on the roster so I'm really interested to see how he develops.

Exactly!

Also, for those that think that his spring performance was reflective of his game, think again. In his own words:

The paradise of being with my girlfriend for 10 days straight and being able to hold her hand through some rough scans and exams is done. I’m officially over the first steps of shock in this situation. Spring ball has started and like usual my priorities adjust once again. Although my physical presence is out on the practice field and in the meeting room, my mind never leaves her. I thought that maybe football would be my get away but in all honestly it becomes some of the worst times of sadness. Being the third string QB at this point in my career, I do a lot of standing around and watching while the guys ahead of me take reps. Those times used to consist of learning as much as I could. Now, after having a year under my belt, the rookie installs are embedded pretty deep so I catch myself mentally leaving the turf and thinking about how Ell is feeling or if she slept the night before or if she will be able to text me in the recovery room after her surgery or anything else that has nothing to do with football and everything to do with the beautiful girl laying in bed 271 miles away from me.

He has been a little busy, to say the least. It's an exciting time for DeShone right now. His girlfriend is in recovery and his role on the team has just been accelerated. Take a read through the link Bogs posted and get some perspective on this young man. I'm looking forward to seeing him get opportunities for reps and game appearances.

As much as I will murdered for writing this, the QB position is now manned completely with RKGs. We are in good shape in that regard.
