This incident may significantly advance American interests (or, at least what our elites perceive them to be) in the region. The separatists lose legitimacy, Russia is forced to distance itself from them (thereby backing off Ukraine as well), and the government in Kiev gets a big boost.

Putin is right. If Ukraine had just surrendered completely to the rebels, or even better to Russia, and let their country get taken over, then it is likely the separatists or Russians wouldn't have shot the plane down.

I mean Putin is being remarkably consistent here. He is on the record saying that if only Stalin had surrendered Russia to the Nazis before the invasion, then all those Russian deaths would have been avoided.

There is no chance of investigating the crash site as the locals are wandering about the crash site . Photos show locals freely walking around the sites, standing on the debris of the air liner, walking among the scattered luggage (and probably taking it), etc.
