My designation not UND's. The same can be said for the type of injury.
Mike Heuerman recently had surgery to repair a hernia, his brother Jeff, a tight end at Ohio State, told the Tribune on Monday.
It might be common knowledge here but I wasn't aware that there was a substantial difference between a hernia and a sports hernia. From the Andrew Sports Medicine website:
Sports Hernia as actually a misnomer. The more appropriate term is "athletic pubalgia". It represents a biomechanical imbalance between the adductor musculature (groin muscle) and the lower abdominal musculature (lower abs). Generally, a groin pull is the inciting event, then due to the muscular imbalance from compensation the rectus begins to pull off of the pelvis. There is no true hernia, simply a muscle-tendon failure. It often presents in a sporting athlete with symptoms that mimic a hernia, however no true "hernia" exists
.
The Andrews site describes simple surgery followed by 4-6 weeks of rehab prior to sports participation. The National Council on Sports Fitness notes 4-12 weeks.
Depending on how long ago "recently" means in the Chi Trib 7/28 article I'll guess that Heuerman misses more than just Fall Camp. The NCAA mandates that both Spring and Fall Camps go through conditioning steps or increments prior to full contact, hence the initial practices in shorts and helmets working up to pads and then full contact. In addition to a surgical procedure rehab period, Heuerman would have to comply with those same NCAA conditioning requirements before being cleared to play.
It possible he could see action against Rice but doubt at this time he'd see much action much less double TE short yardage situation.
I have a friend who works in this field and will see if I can get anything more definitive.
