Using that logic, let's just paint a big ol' scrotum in the end zone. We'll watch anyway, so who cares?

I prefer the stripes because it was unique, classy, and humble. I have nothing against an ND or clover on the 50-yard line, so I'm not against modernizing the field.

Should they use that font shown above, I wouldn't be totally against it. But for the love of god let's not make Notre Dame generic.

Buster I'm not sure if you are referring to my comment of them using block lettering when you made your "generic" comment or not. So disregard if not. I am not sold on a block type font being the best font option if they do any lettering at all. I don't think I would view a "college" type font or in other words block lettering as generic, as much as I would see it as "classic", which is a large part of the ND brand in my opinion. My fear would be some awful font choice and with that in mind I'll go with classic college block lettering all day. When it's all said and done I do have confidence in Swarbrick, Kelly and others to make a wise choice that helps represent the ND brand. I just have a nagging fear in back of my mind that sees an ugly font screwing everything up.

Personally, I think the end zones should stay the same and add the "ND" on the 50. But if what the poster said is true, that would be awesome. Just for the simple fact It will be something different that we have seen at ND.

I think it would be cool if the 40's were both Arizona cardinals red in honor of pat tillman. dave dameshek has been a long time advocate for every NFL stadium doing this. it would be cool if ND got it all started and it colleges did this as well.

Some of us took a beating for being too traditional and wanting to keep the grass. Now those in favor of turf are upset because the traditional stripes might be gone? lol

Feel the same way.
If the field is being changed......then change it.

Having new turf but keeping the end zone stripes in an attempt to make it still feel like the old grass doesn't make much sense to me.
I'm def not opposed to keeping the stripes, but I would have no prob with something else.

Savvy Jack hasn't let us down yet, I doubt he will on this issue either.

Wouldn't mind gold stripes actually now that I think about it. Might look horrible but who knows.

In all honesty, I just dont care about what is in the end zone. It has 0 effect on the team or recruiting or the fans. Not saying that I liked the scrotum idea, but any design or Notre Dame or Fighting Irish is fine by me.

It's really not the same at all though. The field we play on has a really big impact while the end zone pattern doesn't at all.

I am one who loved grass, but I think turf will be a benefit. If we are able to do what Coach Kelly wants, we will be a high flying offense. And the types of athletes we are bringing in will give us an advantage on an artificial surface. For example, this year at home we play Rice, UM, Purdue, Stanford, UNC, Navy, Northwestern, and Louisville. Stanford may be iffy, but I think we definitely out-athlete the other teams. We will be playing faster and scoring more points.

I agree that the turf will help us however it will help other teams too. Navy kinda scares me a little bit.

This is me with the stripes. The grass was a subpar surface to play on, and watching athletic college football teams on it was like watching a Lambo trying to race in swampland.

But the stripes are purely aesthetic. And they were one of the best things about the entire field. I especially love that Buster called it "humble" because thats what it was. They said "This is a football field. We play football here." And I loved them for it. I'll be extremely disappointed if true.

If only it was so simple

I will be disappointed if the stripes are gone as well. I don't care for tradition per se (it doesn't matter to me whether they started it in 1925 or 1995) but the design is simple, elegant, and identifiable. It would be a shame to change it to something generic.

On an unrelated note: I'm sure I will be in the minority here but I would be in favor of names on jerseys.

I am against names on jerseys. Not a ND thing, just dont like it at any level in any sport.

But ND has had names on jerseys. Not regularly. But players names have appeared on the back of jerseys. Anybody remember when?

This administration (Jenkins, Swarbrick, Kelly, Longo, physicians, and trainers), has done truly remarkable things with the ND program. From medically, (read Hunter, Grace, etc.) to improving the brand, to avoiding the easy choice, (big 10) to finding the best deal in conference affiliation (current ND agreement with the ACC), to the UA deal (history making contract in sports merchandising).

Criticizing little issues is about as productive as rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. When you got a thoroughbred like this on a historic run, give it the gas. Let it take you!

The stripes are generic! Could fit any field anywhere.

If they are identifiably ND then I don't consider them generic. Is the McDonalds "M" generic because it's just a letter?
It's not just a letter. The "Golden Arches" were golden arches starting in 1953 because they were an architectural feature on the original restaurants. They weren't combined to form an "M" until 1962.

Big difference between the two for several reasons. First the "M" is copyrighted and known around the world, which precludes it from being generic. The stripes are identifiable to you and me as ND because we are ND fans. If I asked my wife today what is in the end zone at ND, she couldn't answer and she's been to plenty of games. I would imagine if I showed a picture of just the end zone to others they wouldn't guess it was at ND. Generic refers to something without a trademark that can be used anywhere. The stripes would fit any end zone, but the end zone design at Northwestern won't fit at ND. ND doesn't have a trademark on the stripes and I doubt they could ever get one.

The lines were there in 93' when I became a fan I loved it because along with the uniforms they were different so to me they are special. I really hope they keep them matter of fact I wish they could find a way to put the gold on the collars and sleeves and make it look nice on the modern jerseys the way it was in 93' too! O and go back to the two piece blue/white socks. I guess a crazy part of me thinks if they look the same as then they will play the same! Haha
