Gotta get at least one quarterback every year, sometimes two. Kiel's transfer illustrates why this is necessary. Quarterbacks are particularly prone to transferring if they aren't starters. It's hard to go back to just being a member of the team when you've been told all the way through high school that you're something special. But if you want to play QB at a top BCS football program you have to be willing to compete for the job. The best accept the challenge and fight for the top spot. Kiel didn't want to do that. He will probably go on to a career for a losing team and load up on stats.

As a dual-threat QB, Dawkins looks to be an ideal fit for Notre Dame. He seems tailor-made for Kelly's offense. Hopefully, he is not scared away by competition.

Can someone explain the theory behind taking two QBs in some years? I agree w/ taking one per year, but two occasionally seems extreme (unless you've missed on a year and are playing catch-up....but even then, if you have a capable starter and a capable backup, why worry?)

In 2014, we will have EG and Zaire coming back. Ress, Hendrix, and Kiel are gone. Idk about you, but 2 QBs sounds good to me

Understood. But what are the chances that TR or AH get a 5th year? Then you potentially have EG, MZ, TR or AH, freshman.

I completely agree with the 1 per year theory. But two will just create another future log jam, bringing up another potential transfer situation, bringing us right back to where we started. I don't like the idea of that kind of cycle.

With the way this staff recruits, no one should expect them to go after project QBs. Imo, they'll be able to land one elite QB every year. Taking two is just asking for trouble. Again, my opinion.

You are going to need two. Hendrix might not want to comeback and be 3rd in the rotation again. Rees graduates. So then you would have Golson, Zaire, and Dawkins (example). Therefore you are 2 plays away from not even having a backup QB. ND needs to bring in a Dawkins type kid in 2014, and then a Rees/Hendrix guy that knows he is coming to ND to get an education, but at the sametime will be a given a chance to win the job in 2 years after he arrives. I mean look at Dayne Crist time at ND, the unexpected happens, and ND needs to cover their bases for that. They got completely lucky with Zaire, in that he jumped on board before he blew up, and that the depth chart wasnt a concern.

If this is the goal, them I completely understand. However, if the staff goes after two highly regarded QBs, then it will only result in another transfer (more often than not).

IF Rees doesn't play this year, what are the chances he comes back for a 5th and the staff sticks to only recruiting one QB this year? I like EG, MZ, TR, freshman better than EG, MZ, freshman, freshman. IF Tommy doesn't come back for a 5th, is EG, MZ, freshman, freshman really all that different to EG, MZ, freshman? I mean the staff can move over a player from a different position who has a QB background if depth is the only area of concern. It'd only be for one year as a stop-gap. I guess I'm just struggling with idea of using another scholarship (in an already small class) on a second QB when there are other options available.

Can Rees even get a 5th year?

Not if he plays this year, right? I was just tossing out a hypothetical scenario.

Hendrix has the 5th year option already. He sat out his freshman year.

Kiel's transfer would open up an additional slot which would be filled by a replacement QB for no change in the depth chart distribution.

Any former HS QB on the team that was moved to a different position isn't a viable Div 1 GameDay QB. They weren't moved because of a small difference in abilities.

The point is to bring it to the thread and member's attention, so that some one else whom happens to have a subscription to the referred site, can then post or summarize the article.

I'm pretty sure people with prescriptions will eventually notice that there's an update. Posting these links just seems obnoxious to the people who actually pay for the info and are generous enough to share with us.

I'm an II subscriber and don't have twitter. PA's posts help me because I don't spend 24/7 on the internet.
