It seemed like Zaire wanted to tuck and run a lot more than Golson in the spring game. I'd have to go back and watch but I believe Zaire was "sacked" quite a bit more, too. That's probably just inexperience and he doesn't read the defense quite as well as an experienced Golson does. It also seemed the defense threw more at Golson than they did Zaire, especially the 1st few series of the game. I would have no problem with Zaire starting if that is how it plays out but I do think Golson's experience and overall ability makes him the best option this year. If he gets hurt or we are running up the score then I think Zaire would be a fine backup option but I don't see any way he is the starter against Rice.
I think we watched different spring games. I didn't see Zaire tuck and run until the pressure was on top of him. I honestly believe Zaire looked better in the spring game reading defenses and timing his passes.
Golson rarely hit even his second option but that doesn't mean he won't do it in the fall. Kelly was trying to put both of them in difficult situations and not necessarily play to their strengths by having them run specific pass plays.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out but I hope both of our guys are able to get major time on the field this year.
