It seemed like Zaire wanted to tuck and run a lot more than Golson in the spring game. I'd have to go back and watch but I believe Zaire was "sacked" quite a bit more, too. That's probably just inexperience and he doesn't read the defense quite as well as an experienced Golson does. It also seemed the defense threw more at Golson than they did Zaire, especially the 1st few series of the game. I would have no problem with Zaire starting if that is how it plays out but I do think Golson's experience and overall ability makes him the best option this year. If he gets hurt or we are running up the score then I think Zaire would be a fine backup option but I don't see any way he is the starter against Rice.

I think we watched different spring games. I didn't see Zaire tuck and run until the pressure was on top of him. I honestly believe Zaire looked better in the spring game reading defenses and timing his passes.

Golson rarely hit even his second option but that doesn't mean he won't do it in the fall. Kelly was trying to put both of them in difficult situations and not necessarily play to their strengths by having them run specific pass plays.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out but I hope both of our guys are able to get major time on the field this year.

BVG dialed up way more pressure and defensive wrinkles for EG than he did for MZ, period. On TV MZ may have looked better, but that is because they were not playing against the same defenses. TV pointed out few of the differences.

Instead of a meaningless argument about quarterbacks, the point that excites me is that EG is a pretty high end QB, with a pretty good O-line and some talented skill guys. What I want to know is what is BVG going to be able to do against some other decent quarterbacks this year?

FWIW ESPN had a lot of nice things to say about Golson and Zaire just now on College Football Live.

Also, I obviously wish it never happened, but the silver lining of the scandal is that Golson is going to be talked about a whole lot more than he would have had he not been suspended. If he does well, he will get a lot of attention for making the best of a big mistake.

Agreed. He has an opportunity to shine this season. I hope he is one of the bright spots in all of college football, not just for us.

Same here. Its hard to not think Golson should be significantly improved and if so what does that look like.

It sounds like I'm drinking the green kool-aid hardcore right now, but the whole offense as a whole should be better, top to bottom, than it was in 2012.

Quarterback- Improved
Running backs- Improved
O-Line- Will be better IMO
TE- Worse
WR- Better

I am thinking TE will be much more utilized. Koyack and Smythe are two great targets. Damn that Whitfield video got me too.

Haha. Go Irish!

If Everett has enough grasp that Kelly truly lets this offense play at a fast pace then there is enough speed on the field to create a lot of big plays.

I agree Lucci what would is a good frame of reference to see what Kelly's offense should be? (I have a lot of free time at work so I can watch old games)

I think 2008 UC is a good place to start. Principally Kelly has always been an aggressive coach even by his own admission but has been taking what he's been given and that was Tommy Rees and a really good D. That could change.

Also look at the noticeable differences in uniforms from the two pictures above. That's a significant change for the better, IMO

Weiss may have been a stuffed sausage, but he was all ND.

When he got the boot, the Observer ran an OpEd that emphasized this point. The resuts weren't there on the field, and I'll never claim to have enjoyed the end of his tenure, but he did an admirable job of handling academics, player health, charity work in the community, recruiting (offense at least) and campus life. He used to make visits to the dorms to help build excitement for the seasons and spoke at a number of clubs I was in.

I bag on him just like everyone else, but I respect how he tried to do it at ND.

Weis alienated a lot of people. I mean bushels, and for no reason. That was almost as significant as the Ty hole in recruiting that crushed 2007.

I actualky like the old pant color better. If they brought that back I think it would be a throw back touch to old school Irish with a modern twist.

I agree. Definitely prefer the old pant color more. The newer jersey's themselves and the helmets tho are an upgrade IMO.
