I hope this works out for all involved. I was hoping he'd eventually be offered a scholarship. Can he be offered a scholarship (assuming we have one available for one reason or another) and then retain his scholarship if he is unable to play football without the scholarship counting against the 85?

Yes. It's called a medical hardship. The player still retaines the value of the scholarship, but can no longer participate in team activities such as organized weight lifting, practices and, of course, play in games.

ND has had a few players go down this road under Kelly, unfortunately. Cam Roberson and Tate Nichols, both whom I believed just graduated, took medical hardships due to knee injuries. Also, Brad Carrico had a dilemma with his foot/ankle that prevented it from healing properly and couldn't play, but the staff is still honouring his scholarship as he is going into his senior academic year.

That's good info...thanks. I wish the best for this kid!

So sorry to hear this, I admired his putting his team before his recruitment, and this is just a really bad beat. I will be pulling for Justin no matter what. As young as he is, I hope he can make a full and quick recovery.

Illinois has rescinded offer but it looks like Tranquill is staying positive.

Carroll senior sees Illinois scholarship yanked
By Justin Kenny of The News-Sentinel

A freak injury suffered at the IMG 7v7 National Championships last month has clouded Carroll senior Justin Tranquill's future.

An ACL tear will cost Tranquill not only his final season of high school football and eliminate one of the area's most dynamic players from the Chargers' lineup, it already has begun to affect his college options.

Tranquill said Tuesday that Illinois has pulled the scholarship it offered in January, with the senior facing what could be a seven-month recovery process.

Tranquill is shooting for a rehab time of four to five months.

The injury came when Tranquill jumped to knock down a ball from a wide receiver and landed awkwardly on his right leg. It was initially believed that he was suffering from a slight injury, but when the condition did not improve on the way home, Tranquill sought additional treatment.

An MRI late last week indicated that he had a torn ACL, although no other damage to the MCL or meniscus was discovered.

“Obviously, it sucks the injury happened,” Tranquill said. “But you realize you can't do anything about it. You just have to be as positive as possible.”

While Illinois has pulled its offer, Indiana did contact Tranquill to inform him that its scholarship is still in play.

Overall, Tranquill is sitting on nearly a dozen scholarship offers. He is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and the No. 8 player in the state of Indiana in the Class of 2015.

Purdue has an offer out to Tranquill, but he said the Boilermakers have not been in contact much recently.

Tranquill is optimistic that the injury will not seriously affect his recruitment.

“I know from film that I sent out, most colleges know what I am capable of,” Tranquill said.

The injury has sparked debate amongst fans on social media and message boards on the benefit of playing in 7v7 tournaments.

Carroll coach Doug Dinan declined comment on Tranquill's injury, while calls to AWP President Michael Ledo were not returned.

Despite the setback, Tranquill does not have any regrets.

“It was a freak accident,” Tranquill said. “I was out there playing the game I love, there is nothing to regret or look back on.

“It is an obstacle, I'm facing adversity. It is a good opportunity to show people how I can react to this.”

You'd think that Illinois would still keep that open considering the lack of talent.

There are always student loans though that would be quite expensive if he never earned a scholarship. Maybe some type of financial aid if he qualifies. Would hate to think money could be the reason he doesn't get a shot at his dreams. Assuming other schools pull his scholarship offer. Most schools do not honor them when a player gets hurt.

I know all about student loans. lol Worked at Sallie Mae and put five through college. I kind of lump all that together when it comes to affording college. I should have been clearer.

What a great attitude and sense of humor. Someone get Kelly on the line. Make him an offer!

After all this hate and disdain with all these 3 star commits, I think a PWO offer should be given to him, not a scholarship. Unless he sneaks in as the last DB because we could not get anyone else.

I was referring to Indiana. Isn't Illinois U of I?

Yeah, I think that's to confirm that his offer to IU is still good.

I'll question again why the U of I pulls the scholly. It's not like they have gobs of football talent waiting to go. If I were Beckman, I'd take a chance still.

Respect IU for sticking with him, screw U of I, if he wound up wearing a gold helmet, this guy would not be disappointed.#teamjt

IF he comes back 100%, I think he's a steal for IU. Has everything you want in a safety except elite size.
