Don't clean this up. This is two of the best posters on IE discussing defensive philosophy and scheme fit. It isn't about Hilliard but if we miss on him this discussion is 100% relevant to what happens next. This is just a short departure from the Hilliard discussion by Lax and TP. If they were talking about academics or something that would be different. Leave this football discussion up.

I'd take Sam Hubbard in '14 over Justin Yoon in '15.

If Yoon were to, hypothetically, be both the kicker AND punter, he'd be on the field for about a maximum of 10-12 plays a game. Hubbard, playing LB, S, or TE could be on the field 50, 60, 70 plays a game. Even if he crapped out on Saturdays, if nothing else, his sheer size and athleticism alone or together could make him an invaluable practice and scout team player.

So you would prefer to not have a kicker on the team?

Relax bro.

I was being facetious.

Thanks for all of the great insight!

I am thinking, with 20-20 hindsight, that the way '14 came together we got a lot of underrated players with phenomenal upsides.

I was impressed with the versatility, and speed of some of these kids.

But there is a point to having a specific idea of what you want a recruit for. I will be interested in seeing that with BVG in the future. Will we see how a recruit fits in? How early in the process? This ain't no 3-4, two gap, bend but don't break defense anymore.

He is a punter first.

This

To be honest, at ND we should not have any problems winning with 82 scholarship position players and three specialists in a LS, K, and a P. I would argue that having a great one at all three spots wins you more games than people would care to admit.

I stand corrected then. I was under the impression that he would probably do both, much like Brindza.

He could do both if we needed, but he is way more advanced as a punter than kicker right now, especially place kicking. Going from Brindza to Yoon would make me feel really good about the state of our kicking game - which most people seem to underrate even after games like 2012 Pittsburgh.

The allotment (or lack thereof) of scholarships to kickers and long snappers is not what has propelled the sec, Oklahoma, UT, fsu, and usc to winning Natty's. Similarly, it is not why ND hasn't won one.

We never fill a full class so I don't see why we shouldn't give elite kickers schollies.

Yeah, Alabama last year #crappyfieldgoalkicker=nonattyappearanceforbama. Wait isn't this the Hilliard thread? Is he going to place kick too?

I'm not saying I want Jimmymac to jump down from the stands and attempt a field goal.

What I said was that I would take Hubbard over Yoon.

No offense but isn't that obvious. I'm not sure there is one person on the planet that would take Yoon over Hilliard. The beauty is we don't have to worry about that.

Per Fong,

Hilliard says he has enough information from both schools that he could give tours if he needed it.

Two schools are totally different. ND is structured, academic, prestigious, a lot like his school.

OSU is a public school, exciting, loves the players, and more energy on campus.

He mentioned how cool the players at OSU were three times in the article. So there's that.

If I'm basing my guess strictly off of that interview, he chooses OSU.

So either he makes a business decision or not. I feel like these situations rarely go our way.

FWIW, he notes that 'both schools have great business schools'.

I know OSU's graduate business program is really solid, because I looked into going there for my MBA.

No idea about their undergrad business degree, but I bet it doesn't light a candle to ND's. No sense in arguing academics though, Justin doesn't care what we think!

Interesting. I took the interview with Wiltfong completely different. Almost felt like the only real thing he could say about Osu was liking the players. He was much more thoughtful and detailed when talking ND. Still 50/50 to me with possibly a little more lean towards ND.
