Spoke with ISD, said the combination of athletics and academics are huge and we are on national stage. Said he will play cornerback and return kicks, and he is a cornerback at heart. He thinks the coaches like his length. Relieved that it's over and is looking forward to his senior year.

Coach D quote:
I looooooooove this kid. 5-10 years ago he's the kind of kid Tressel would have scooped up before anyone knew who he was. Then 2 or 3 years later the kid is starting and an All-Big 10 player. Love this kid and love that ND is starting to really hit Ohio hard, with success.

I would love to see more tape at CB, but seems like a terrific athlete. Good stuff.

So this class is hypothetically half way done?

Guys we just got done with spring evaluations, where the staff was out in full force scouting and recruiting like crazy. They have seen quite a bit over the last few months between film and in person visits. If they are accepting commitments its because they like what they see from what's available.

Very good point Lucky.

One note on the 3:s: frustration that some of you are experiencing. This is a solid base of a class. You can pick up solid puzzle piece now and wait out the 4:s: and 5:s: commits who are taking their time. Compare our class right now with the FSU class with FSU coming off of a national championship. 8 of their 12 commits are 3:s: players.

tj, honest question. With so few scholarships to give out seems strange that we would take his commitment at this point with ND being involved with other top CB. Are we loading up on DB's? Or is Coleman this good? Does this means no Crawford?
Honest answers...

We're now almost assuredly going to get to 20 spots plus. This new revised plan puts an emphasis this cycle on DL and DB, and then offensive Skill Athletes, namely RB and WR. We'll "overload" the first two positions if possible with guys the staff really likes, whether "ready-made" players and/or more developmental upside prospects they believe have high ceilings. That's what is going on here now.

They love Coleman as described elsewhere in my posts. So no, not strange at all.

Yes to trying to "load up."

They think he's that good potentially.

No relation to Crawford. He still should pop soon.

What changed to where we are now "assuredly going to get to 20 spots plus"? Is KVR expected to bolt after the season or something? I haven't heard of anyone who is seriously injured or considering transferring right now.

Per TJ,

A quick add-on comment on Coleman: BVG didn't get a chance to watch his videos until fairly recently, while on the road nationally for spring evals, but once he did, he asked why we hadn't been pursuing him with an offer already much earlier. Really likes this kid as a man CB with outstanding athleticism, movement skills, competitiveness and natural CB instincts. Offensive staff also really likes him as a SlotWR/APB prospect, too. Coach Booker loves his STs potential. Sums it up.

Not to take away from this commitment, but wanted to add this:

So many recruits/commits this cycle have mentioned Zaire as a guy they've bonded with on visits. Great to see for the future.

Well it's pretty expected in this case, they're Alter boys.

I really like it when the staff like a guy on offense and defense. This is true of Crawford, btw. That really gives the staff some flexibility in recruiting other guys down the road.

My hope is that a lot of 5Y eligible guys may be losing their presumed starting jobs to over-performing underclassmen.

EDIT: even with zero attrition ND can get to 22 recruits by only taking 5 fifth year players, by my count.

The article pasted below lists 6 "definite" takes but one is Davaris and I think he's pretty likely to try the NFL next year.

This is also a great pickup because we now have a CB with the frame to handle larger WR's that some of our other CB targets would be mismatched against. I have nothing against smaller CBs, but you can't match them up against bigger receivers.

Love the kid's tape btw.

Gotta have a lock down CB with great man coverages to run BVG's defensive scheme. Looks like the Irish may have just gotten that. Congrats Irish Nation.

That is what I saw. The kid is all quick-twitch muscle and is itching to make a play every down. Great pick-up!

Love his film, offer list is pretty poor but whatever.

I noticed he had really low stats last year, something like 19 tackles, 2 interceptions, 10 pass break ups.

I wonder if he wasn't so good that teams simply didn't throw his way, and that caused him to go unnoticed by other programs.

Is this the mystery commit?

No, there is no mystery recruit. The recruit is Elijah Taylor, he apparently committed to the staff last weekend and is waiting for whatever reason to make it public. Per everybody.
