The Irish already have a couple offers out to Midwestern quarterbacks like Jack Beneventi and Jayru Campbell, but are also looking at others, including North Carolina’s Kendall Hinton.
The 6-foot, 185-pounder from Southern High School in Durham already holds an offer from Duke and is receiving strong interest from others.
Notre Dame assistant Mike Elston has already made a stop by Southern to check on Hindall and even compared his physical ability to Everett Golson.
“They came in and showed some interest,” Southern head coach Adrian Jones said.
“They said they like what he does and he kind of reminds them of the quarterback that’s from South Carolina. I guess he resembles him a little bit, so they were just touching base with him and want to get him down to camp to evaluate him in person.”
At this point, Hinton is planning on getting to South Bend for camp in the middle of June.
“We’re going to try to take a visit and go down there and camp,” his coach said. “He’s got a couple other places that he’s going to, so we’re just trying to work that into our schedule.
“We’re trying to work out a plan where he can get down there the day before and then works out the next day. We’ll probably hit one on the way back.”
The offer from Duke is a big one these days with David Cutcliffe as head coach.
“It definitely is,” Jones said. “It says a lot about him. They really like him a lot. Like I told him, Cutcliffe has a great résumé with quarterbacks. You can’t get any better than that.”
Hinton was named All-Area First team as a sophomore after throwing for 2,700 yards and 28 touchdowns with another 300 yards rushing in 2012.
“
He has a great arm,” said Jones. “He’s smart. He’s a lot better of a pocket passer than people think. He’s very athletic and he can use his legs, but he’s just as good in the pocket as he is on the run.
“I think that’s a great attribute because a lot of times you have quarterbacks who are just athletes who use their legs, but Kendall is a true pocket passer who can spin the ball very well.”
Jones said Hinton is right about 6 feet, but is hoping he hits a growth spurt.
“He wears a size 13 shoe and
his dad’s 6-5, so I think we’re going to get some more out of him,” the coach said.
Hinton is also a great young man, according to his coach.
“
He’s a 4.0 student,” said Jones. “He’s great in the classroom. He’s not much of a talker as far as on the field, but he leads by example with everything he does.”
He’s receiving strong interest from the ACC and SEC.
“North Carolina State is showing some interest, Clemson, of course Duke, and UNC are some area ones,” Jones said. “Schools like Vanderbilt and Tennessee are showing interest as well.
“He’s enjoying the recruiting process. Schools are coming in and showing interest and he’s trying to make sure he hits the road and stays in contact with those schools.”
