The way I see it is you have to have the Mike Golic Jr's on board or your team just won't be that great.

Welcome to the team, Brandon! Hope to see big things in the future from you!

Really good stuff from TJ on staffs view of Tiassum.

The ability to play a Nose/1-technique, with the upside and developmental capability to play DT/3-technique.

Put differently, the skill set now suited more for NT/1 with the talent/athleticism quotient and profile to swing to DT/3 with proper development. And a different type of DT/3 potentially than a few of the young kids about to fill the roster (current) and than a few other top national DT/3s we're still recruiting.

Tape of a five star player, his competition looks bad though.

Thanks for posting the film. I like his tape better than Elijah Taylor's.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Just spoke to <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23NotreDame&src=hash">#NotreDame</a> DT commit Brandon Tiassum (<a href="https://twitter.com/tiassum">@tiassum</a>). He will be recruiting LB Asmar Bilal (<a href="https://twitter.com/AsmarBilal">@AsmarBilal</a>) to join him in South Bend.</p>— Tom Loy (@TomLoy247) <a href="https://twitter.com/TomLoy247/statuses/475746715404759041">June 8, 2014</a></blockquote>

His tape may look more impressive but if you look closely, the majority of the time he is blowing through kids who are maaaaybe 5'11" 250. He has a tendency to stand very upright off the ball, but that is coachable. I would love to hear how he competes at II.

Who is the 5 star he says he will try to recruit here other than Bilal?

He's certainly a project I think it's general consensus that this kid years at least a couple of years before production is expected. However in the grand scheme of things I think that's ok. We brought in 3 DT's last year, 2 (Hayes and Cage) that I think are low floor type players. This year we are coupling Tiassum with Taylor who is also a low floor kind of prospect so we can kind of roll the dice here. He has some pretty nice physical traits to work with. We'll need to add a true 3 tech or pass rushing interior Dlineman for this class to be a success at DT.

I like the pick up, now lets take Taylor and the kid from Canada and call DT recruiting a wrap this cycle!

I'm not pumped about either him or Taylor, but one thing I like about low level DL is that they will probably stick around for 5 years and at their current size, they could really be monsters by then.

You never have enough agile big bodies. They are hard to find. Great news. Congrats to Brandon and his family.

Since when are 4 star, top 25-30 DTs in the nation low level guys? To me, low level would be mid three star guys. Neither of them are 5 star, all world prospects, but these two DTs aren't slouches either. Both are legit talents with upside.

Brandon is a 3-star on Rivals, Scout, 247 composite, and ESPN, and a low 4 on 247.

Personally, that's a 3-star to me.

Same with Taylor but he has a 4th star on scout. If you always round up that's fine, I don't look at it that way.

And probably more importantly, their offer lists aren't that impressive, Brandon's more so than Taylor's.

I believe Ironman said MID three star. If he is three star by 3 and 4 star by another, imo thats a high 3.

Beyond that...the summer camp circuit is just heating up. Still have whole senior year left. Who knows where some of these finals rankings end.

I know this gets redundant, but the staff (Elston, BVG, and BK) all have evaluated and said, "we'll take please." I think those three know what they are doing.

I never said they shouldn't take them.

I said they're not commits I'm pumped about, but that it's good to have these types because they tend to stick around for 5 years.

I'll log out and get my pumped face on and log back in though, lol.

This. I will take their evaluation over any recruiting service every single time. Putting too much stock on stars is funny to me, because when guys step on campus, they all go out the window anyways.

I don't view Taylor as a low level DT. He's a very quality 1 tech prospect. He is extremely strong for being 17. When Tenn, MSU, OSU, and ND are heavily recruiting you I wouldn't call it low level. Tiassum I can understand but again we need to bring in some guys to provide depth with potential for more upside. I'm very happy with this start at DT.

Great thoughts. It is a great start if we have them both. Add Gallimore or another big name and it becomes ideal. Depth along the DL is critical to play with the big boys and whether or not they excite some of us is irrelevant. Though I think any kid that commits and the staff was chasing should pump all of us up. Just my 2 cents.

Again, I think every team needs the Mike Golic Jr type players. This to me is one of them. A 3 star guy with BCS offers just not from major schools, have the size and ability to handle the ND workload. They come in, compete every day at practice, see minimal playing time till 3rd or 4th year, possible for 5th year and contributor. Those are the guys that can add to your depth, maybe turn into a solid contributor, but at worst they work hard and bring the "5 star" guys back to earth when things are going bad for them.

I am excited about the upside for this guy and I hope he becomes a big player for us, whichever way that may be!

Hmmm.... My intuition says that this young man will be a very good football player for us. Why?

a). let's say that this power player is rated the 25th best DT in the nation {the three systems rating say 20,21, and 30-something}. If that's true, then very few football teams would be getting any better players at DT than Brandon.

b). and let's say that Brandon, due to location, is running under the radar. Well, maybe if the rating boys saw more of him they'd rate him higher. Oh baloney you say. Well someone DID see more of him and seems to have rated him quite higher --- their names are Elston, van Gorder, and Kelly.

c). we've loaded up on some high-athletic DLinemen [even folks like Day currently and Trumbetti soon, and Hayes right behind}, but maybe not so much on middle-pluggers. Young Mr. Tiassum looks a lot like that to me.

d). in his highlights film [always a pathetically shallow tool to judge any player on, so I apologize ahead of time], I thought that I noticed several kids around his same size, but no one able to even get in his way --- well, maybe once and he still made the tackle. Also, the rest of his team was not living in the backfield, so the opponents must have been capable of blocking somebody --- but not him.

Big, powerful young man, capable of being a middle-of-the-line run-stopper, signs of athleticism to build upon, already a 300 pounder waiting for Longo, and probably one of the top twenty DTs around for his year --- not sure what's not to like here.

Welcome to a great place, Brandon.

Idk if it's just me, but Brandon's upside and tools blow Mike Golic's out of the water - and that is no shot at Mike. He was great for us. But Brandon is a different caliber of prospect IMO. I don't get that comparison at all.

I see where you're coming from but nearly half of the top 50 NFL draft picks this year were evaluated as 3* or less in high school.

Of course we get giddy when we see blue chippers signing on at ND but Kelly develops talent and is only now getting into a groove recruiting the athletes he can mold into ballers.

Let me put it this way. Bennett Jackson is not the Giants 6th round pick if Charlie Weis is still his head coach.

Hill, Blankenship, Bonner, Mokwuah.. Kelly sees 5*'s.

I agree with OMM; this kid is good and I think a great pickup, not a filler-in.
