It's his personal account, dude can say whatever he wants.

Haha, it's not what he says. It's his lack of doing his job and coming up with excuses for it.

-he's the single worst recruiting writer in the game right now and I don't even think it's close. Then he has the nerve to act like it's not his fault, haha.

This is pretty disappointing, but with him being an Indiana native, and hopefully a good season from us can get him to reconsider. Definitely a long way to go.

This is my hope as well, but I really think PSU will have to seriously implode for this to be a possibility. I honestly thought OSU was going to be the hurdle here. Fucking Franklin...

I have to think that being close to where his mom lives was the deciding factor. Not saying Franklin isn't a good recruiter but a kid from IN who had ND as his front runner for awhile doesn't just choose another school because of a good sales pitch. But being close to his mom who maybe hasn't had the opportunity to see him play ball very much could be a very real reason for him to choose a school that wasn't his 1st choice. If that is the reason then I can't be mad at him. Gotta do what is best for him and his family.

Get Bilal, and we're good imo.

let's just face it dudes....our staff doesn't seem to go all in too much early on with everybody we'd hope they would

Yep, and whether right or wrong that seems to be how they do things. They turn it up at the end when it counts. But we should all keep in mind that when they see a can't miss prospect like Jaylon Kelly was all in very early.

Is Jaylon Kelly's middle name Comma?

I'm saying this is far from over.

Wow. A Penn State that actually puts some effort into recruiting for a change could be tough for us (and Ohio State). We've beaten them to lots of eastern kids over the years, and some from Pennsylvania. Now they pluck a kid from our backyard.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if this one's not quite over. Hard sells can wear off, and I hope we stay in touch.

Agree! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Interesting tidbit I haven't seen before today from Wiltfong, Barajas' Mom lives in New York so playing at PSU means he is placing close to her

That's the first you've heard of that? No offense, Sluh, but you're usually on top of things and that was mentioned before he ever committed.

Or you're saying it's the first Wiltfong has ever really mentioned it, in which case, that may or may not be correct. I'm not sure.

Some insight from Barajas on why he chose PSU and his relationship with Franklin. It looks like Franklin is going to be a tenacious recruiter with his energy and personality.
James Franklin off to good start in Penn State Nittany Lion recruiting - ESPN

It's not as if Franklin is focusing upon longtime Penn State fans, whose parents drive around with "409" bumper stickers. He's changing the minds of out-of-state high schoolers with confidence -- "I'm not letting you go anywhere else" -- and with an energy usually reserved for motivational speakers who have a predilection toward espresso. Two of Penn State's most recent commits would've offered blank looks or a confused stare if you told them two months ago they'd be changing their Twitter backgrounds to a Nittany Lions logo.

"I would've just said, 'No,' " offensive guard Steven Gonzalez said with a laugh. "I would've said that I most likely would've been a Buckeye."

Added linebacker Josh Barajas, a heavy Notre Dame lean: "I would've told you that you were crazy."

Barajas gave Penn State a chance when he started receiving more handwritten letters from the university than anywhere else. He then arrived to a practice that featured Franklin performing the worm and playfully spraying water in the kicker's face before a field goal. And when Barajas sat down to a lunch of cheesesteak and fries, a time normally reserved for just recruits, Franklin pulled alongside a chair and ate with his family.

Barajas didn't expect that. It was a small gesture -- but it was one no other coach had done. Bill O'Brien, whose office prominently displayed a photo of him alongside Tom Brady, often called recruits into his office to chat. He won top prospects over with his track record but induced sweaty palms and stammers. Here, Franklin's personality is putting recruits at ease -- and then winning them over

"Sometimes you're kind of uneasy sitting around a guy that important," Barajas said, "but I was just talking to him like he was my friend. We talked about a lot of stuff, too, not just football."

I still think Franklin is an overrated coach, but those gestures do go a long way. I don't know all the ins and outs of the ND recruiting pitch, but I hope our coaches do/start doing stuff like that. That's pretty cool, except that Franklin couldn't outcoach me on Madden '08.

EDIT: After Whiskey's post I want to clarify that I'm referring to Franklin sitting down with Barajas' family during lunch when he could have been elsewhere.

  1. Are you f*cking kidding me? That is some Tosh Lupoi/ Trooper Taylor level bullshit right there.
  2. If that's what convinced Barajas to pull the trigger for PSU, he wasn't shopping down our aisle anyway.
  3. Have fun with your best buddy coach, Josh! *pew pew fist bump*

It cannot be overstated the charisma, effort, and energy of Franklin. He will destroy it in recruiting. Like I said in an earlier post somewhere in this thread or elsewhere he's like the perfect combination of what makes so many other coaches great recruiters.

Right now, he's basically Pete Carroll without the "coaching" stones (yet... but he may prove to have them sooner rather than later). If/when he gets great coordinators and improves his Xs/Os he could really kick butt in a weak league.

let's be careful to jump to conclusions without knowing the whole story. i do think showing you're personable will go a long way with recruits.

yes those gestures flat out aren't BK, but that doesn't mean they're a bad way to show that you can build a relationship with your players.

How is he going to handle it when he fucks up in practice and his best buddy yells at him and calls him a dumbass?

Pfft. He'll just squirt some water in Josh's face and they'll all laugh about it later!

I like to picture my coach as doing the robot rather than the worm, and criticizing the powder-to-water ratio in the gatorade rather than yelling at players for costly redzone interceptions.

This 'Pete Carrol' style will be all fun and games until they don't meet expectations. Then the fans will turn to 'well if he spent less time trying to be everyone's friend and practicing the worm, maybe we'd have a shot at the B1G title'.

Personally, I prefer BK's attitude and personality.

You mean the style that went 3 NC games and won 2 of them and just won the Super Bowl?
