I do cataloging and new book processing for an academic library, officially considered a "library specialist." It's pretty cool to get the first look at all of the new items as they arrive at the university. It's like Christmas every day for a book lover.

Ideally I would like to go to grad school for library sciences and become an academic librarian. Hopefully I could use my experience/youth as an advantage as libraries look to be more digital-oriented and try to keep up with advancing technology.

That sounds like such an ideal job. I consider myself a bibliophile who's ultimate goal is to become a polymath. If there was a job that allowed me to read constantly and also satisfy my technological bent, I think I'd be professionally fulfilled.

Will be interning in the Financial Advisory Service line at one of the big 4 this summer in NYC. I am pretty excited for the experience.

On campus I am a TA for Carl Ackermann (any recent ND grad would know who this is) and am a tour guide for the office of undergrad admissions.

That's a great role. From what I've heard through friends, the advisory side of the Big 4 is a bit more enjoyable than tax.

PMs are so overrated. They're like the Longo of the IT world. All of the credit but the IT would be just fine with a good BA and developers. And they're incredibly over paid.

Having said that, my goal is to become one. :).

Preach :eek:grin:

I'm a Sr. "Workflow" Developer (Software) for a Large Corporation. Work mainly on business process automation and document management solutions.

Yes, it's as exciting as it sounds.

Thanks- I've heard similar, definitely was excited to do something other than tax/audit as an accounting major.

With the current load of items arriving daily, there isn't much time to get deep into a book when it arrives. I'm usually cataloging/processing items ASAP so they can move on. Some of them have to go through immediately because they've been requested specifically by professors, while others go through immediately because they were purchased at the advantage of a student. Often, ordering a new item, cataloging said item, and then processing it is a much faster process than making a student wait on another library to ship it through an inter-library loan system.

Of course, if I spent less time on IE, I might have more time to read up on some of the items that come through my desk.

And the "technological bent" thing actually relates to an interesting time in many libraries. As technology advances, our systems are beginning to be noticeably "behind." In an age where everything is streamlined and students can accomplish nearly anything on laptops, tablets or iPhones, some of our systems and processes are not "simplified" in a way that optimizes those technological advances. Sometimes those "systems" that are lagging behind are the programs that we use behind-the-scenes, while others are systems that are crucial to our patrons.

It's fascinating to see the differences among professionals when it comes to advancing technology.

I manage two locations for a builder distributor of home appliances. We sell to and through builders and designers for mostly high end homes. Here's some pics of one of the showrooms. I love showing them off and if you need a subzero (or 100) I'm your guy.

I'm a business analyst for a fortune-20 company. Sounds fancy, but what it means is I work between the IT team and the people who run the business and make sure they get what they need from IT.

I am a Claim Team Supervisor for a major healthcare company. I have worked here 19 years and we are not the devil nor do we spend all day trying to figure out how not to pay your claims. My team was created to focus on payment improvement.

I am also a part-time Christian author with several published articles and devotions. Trying to clean up one of my novels to sell to a publisher soon. That is a very humbling and frustrating path, which is why I am STILL a Supervisor for a major health insurance company.

I'm a senior tax accountant for AOL. It's about as exciting as it sounds... and yes they are still in business.

Could not WAIT to get out of the Big 4. Not sure what it's like in a small market but DC was rough. Too much work not enough peons. They had me basically on the road for a year with one day off on weekends. Driving home from Reagan in rush hour traffic is not fun after 6 consecutive 12-16 hour days when you can't use 66.
