KeiVarae Russell: Ready To Man Up

The article is about Russell, but I really like the change in philosophy BVG is bringing.

“Coach D, he wanted to keep everything in front because big plays really cause losing,” Russell said. “In 2012 we played a lot of zone as well, but we didn’t give up any big plays. Last year, the games we lost … it’s always big plays that cost us.

“Coach D’s philosophy was great but we never could really cause many turnovers just because we weren’t really aggressive. This one, there will be a lot of turnovers caused …[VanGorder] wants you to cover every single route. Two-yard curl, he wants you on it. That’s his mind-set: Don’t give them anything.

Russell has been one of my favorites since he was being recruited, I love his enthusiastic attitude.

For most of last year he played like the best person on the defense, including Nix and Tuitt. His development has been possibly the single most important development for this team since arguably Manti. He's a beast and only getting better.

Notre Dame: Cooks' challenge spurs Russell's growth | CSN Chicago

KeiVarae Russell lined up across from Rutgers wide receiver Brandon Coleman, who had burned Bennett Jackson three times early on in December's Pinstripe Bowl. "Game's over, big guy," Russell told him. "You're on the wrong side now."

Coleman didn't have a catch the rest of the afternoon, while Russell picked off a pass and had three other pass breakups.

For Russell, the Pinstripe Bowl was the culmination of a long road back from the worst game of his career -- Notre Dame's 41-30 loss to Michigan. Russell looked like someone still figuring out how to play the position that night in Ann Arbor, despite holding his own there as a greenhorn cornerback in 2012.

After the game, cornerbacks coach Kerry Cooks made a cut-up of of Russell's mishaps against Michigan (quite a few of which involved Jeremy Gallon, who caught eight passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns), and intertwined those in a tape with some of Russell's better moments from 2012. And Cooks' challenge was simple: Consistently play to your potential, and you can be a great cornerback.

"It was kind of a good and bad," Cooks said earlier this spring. "The good should be you consistently all the time, and this bad you should never put on tape, especially being here at Notre Dame, the most marketable place in college football since you're on national TV every Saturday. He bought into it, and I just challenged him to be an elite player consistently."

After the Pinstripe Bowl, Russell said he felt like a "full-blown corner" and that he thinks he can be the best cornerback in the country in 2014. He'll get to press more under defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder -- the added physicality of which Cooks and VanGorder think will suit Russell well.

There's some substance to Russell's claim that he can be the best (or, at least, one of the best) corners in the country this coming fall, given how much his coaches rave about his talent and work ethic. Russell's not to that elite level yet, but that's the challenge from Cooks heading into summer workouts.

"There's not a wide receiver in the country, in my opinion -- I've been doing this 13 years -- that he shouldn't be able to compete with," Cooks said. "That's just how strongly I feel about him, and what I've seen and the guys that I've coached that are playing in the NFL, he's by far and beyond the best from a talent level."

Just gotta pray the Gary Gray curse doesn't hit him. I thought Bennett would be a shutdown corner his senior year

You did? I thought he was going to be good, but not "shut down". I didn't even think he was going to be the best corner on the team, based off of KR's freshman campaign.

I believe there is an explicit rule that states if you are hit by the sophomore curse, you cannot be hit by any other. So KR should be good.

Yeah, I thought he'd be really good. Then again, I don't know too much about playing DB, I always played LB, DE, or TE in high school haha. I just thought he definitely had the speed and height, I figured with another offseason he would be ready to dominate.

If Russell's one of the best five-to-eight corners in the nation, and here comes Riggs, we're going to be able to do a lot of confusion and gambling with the front seven. ... and blitzing an occasional safety.

This should be a bunch of fun, gentlemen.

... and with Day, Jones, Springmann, Hayes, Cage, et al big enough to plug the middle, those defensive edges should be wildly dynamic and disruptive.

This excites me as much as last year's prospect did at this time, but hopefully with a healthier crew and a more aggressive scheme.

I think the prospects are much brighter! (Health wise particularly.) But we are on the same path.

We've quietly built a very good secondary, with some young talent coming in as well. Russell will be a pretty high draft pick if he stays healthy IMO--he outside of Zack Martin played like the best player on the team.

Given Russell's demeanor, I'd be surprised if he bolted for the NFL unless he's given a first round grade. If he is, he'd be silly not to take it but if he's a day two selection, I'd expect him to be back for a senior year.
