The most absurd position is to hope it was aliens. If in fact aliens did take the flight, then they are capable of finding life in the galaxy (which we've been unsuccessful at), making a plane vanish and remaining undetected. In this scenario, their powers surpass ours in all measures so we are fully and unconditionally fucked.

Have you never seen Independence Day?

Hahahahahahaha

It wasn't good for the previous 2 years but the 2014 episodes have been quite good. They've put the characters in some unique zombie situations that have put me on the edge of my seat.

Shooting it down if it heads here. No reason for it to be all the way over here.

Absolutely have to shoot it down.

A 777 could carry over 100,000 lbs of nuclear, biological or chemical material. If it were shot down at altitude .....where would it go?

I hope they find it quick .

Also, I send prayers to the crew, passengers and their families.

Humanity needs something to bring us together. We don't have a transcedent cause right now you think ending global poverty and global world peace would make sense but some people don't like that idea.

Fighting aliens would give humanity something to rally around. It might allow humanity become more of a society and not just individualist liking in our own bubbles. If fighting dangerous alieans is what it takes for us to be a we society then so be it.

(For the record I don't believe in aliens).

Hypothetical situation :

This missing 777 fully fueled can go almost anywhere in the world and can carry thousands of pounds.

You're the leader of a country.

After missing for several days, this plane all of a sudden appears on radar again with its transponders working, but absolutely no radio contact.

It may or may not still have everyone on board.

It's flying straight at your country.

What do you do?

This is why I'm not built for major leadership roles. Obviously you blow it out of the sky and that's really the only move to be made. In all honesty though I doubt I'd be able to sleep well thinking of all the people on that plane and all of thier family members. I'm just not built for that.

On a less heavy note: Walking Dead is good stuff... WD>>>Lost any day of the week. :)

Yep, Largo, or Blofeld in You Only Live Twice but both SPECTRE.

Maybe they had a much bigger SPECTRE plane fly in and 'ate' the 777??

Seriously the news media sucks. It is all infotainment not news.

Fox News' sole purpose is to feed red meat to their viewers. I don't watch MSNBC because it is the same sort of infotainment.

Been watching some of the programing on free speech tv. A lot of topics are being covered that the corporate media refuses to cover.

Just to put this in perspective, debris from the Air France flight 447 crash from a few years ago off the coast of Brazil wasn't found until 5 days after it went down. The main part of the wreckage and most of the human remains weren't found until 2 years after. The point is, it's probably a little too early to accurately speculate.

Spoke with my dad today who has been in the airline business since he was 18 yrs old and this was what he brought up. He also commented on the reliability of a 777 and that if there was a total decompression of the aircraft we would most definetly have already seen debris. The thing that he said stood out most was their altitude and actions once the aircraft was picked up on radar. Just so everyone is clear this is only a brief conversation between us, but to his credit he was the director of maintenance for Pan Am, Paige Avjet, Airtan, and now close to retirement runs the GSE department for Southwest. He is also considered an aging aircfaft specialist and consults for the FAA. All this and he truly said the only 3 things that might make sense is a "catastrophic event", a severe electrical failure (explains no radio contact) or someone attempted to take the plane. Just figured I'd share with you guys

I agree that those 3 options make the most sense. I was thinking that if they had a severe electrical failure that they might have tried to turn around and head back to the airport they took off from as they would be closer to there then to Beijing but since their instruments weren't working that they veered off course and ended up way off course from both where they were going and from where they came. It would make sense as to the no radio contact, and to how they ended up so far off the course.

This has to have been discussed and shot down by now, but if the phones really rang and weren't answered (i.e., the device calling out actually connected to the device(s) on the plane) they would have been able to track the place where the call was received. What am I missing?

In order to end up NORDO (No Radio), an aircraft would have to experience both a complete electrical failure, AND a failure of the emergency battery system, which powers appropriate radios so that pilots can make mayday calls. It's not impossible, but it would be a pretty big stretch, to speculate that BOTH of those events occurred, simultaneously.

The only thing I think of would maybe be a fire in the cabin?

Hilarious. I've never heard of this "free speech tv." From its name, I suspected it likely nothing better than some cameras following an all night drug session of Occupy Wall Street groupies.

So, I check out the website. What is the top listed featured video? "In a death penalty case, does the accused have the right to "stand his/her ground" against the judge and/or prosecution threatening to take his/her life?"

MSNBC and Foxnews are absolutely terrible, but they are paragons of journalistic virtue compared to this drivel.

You are quite right though. That topic isn't covered by the "corporate media." At least they have some semblance of sanity.

If there was a fire in the cabin, the crew would be trained to send out a mayday, as soon as it was detected. And it would be incredibly rare, for there to suddenly be a fire which disables ALL electrical systems, including the emergency bus. Not to mention that a complete and total electrical failure would mean that the pilots would essentially lose all control of the flight controls. The hydraulic pumps that actuate the flight control surfaces are all electric.

You are 100% correct, there are actual SOPs for electrical failure. Something like having to radio in every 30 min, not sure if that is just a USA thing or all airlines.

It's almost amazing how you can turn any thread into a platform for your progressive, liberal political ideology.

His first post is clearly a joke about aliens and the second bashes a liberal media outlet alongside a conservative one. Free speech tv isn't what I would call "liberal".

Love ya, man. But I don't get the hate on Chicago here.

More of my two cents worth. JMurphy's dad is more than likely correct. We all love a good conspiracy, but the fact remains that pretty much every major event that has had a conspiracy theory attached to it has ended up with a reasonable explanation.

Planes don't always carry a full load of fuel for a flight. Back in the 90's, I had a delay due to a malfunctioning fuel gauge. When fully fueled the plane could easily reach out destination. I asked a pilot why they don't just fill it up and replace the gauge later rather than cause a 4 hour delay. He said they fuel enough for the trip and a little extra to keep the weight of the plane down so it is cheaper to fly it.

P.S. You do know we never landed on the moon.

Bc no one picked up to ping the phone. A lot of companies have different procedures. I know when my phone is off it goes straight to voicemail, when its in airplane mode it rings, when the battery is dead it rings. Some companies are opposite of that. So just bc their phones rang, doesnt mean that they were in service.

Also, there are reports of them being on social media on mobile devices. It just means that they were never signed out on that device, and then were "timed-out" by the specific website to make it seem like they physically got off social media.
