Not to be "that guy"....but Hammann is a fast kid and i def see him being able to compete for a spot on Special Teams. But there is a significant difference in speed in the video posted earlier of his 100m and this one. I do not buy he is a tenth of second faster than Darby in the rain going into a head wind.

I thought Darby was known for his 200m, not his 100m?

And isn't the beauty of track that the clock doesn't lie?

That's true. Kids in Dyersville who don't go to Beckman end up at Western Dubuque HS in Farley or Cascade HS.

That area is known for outstanding baseball, but not necessarily football.

Yep. That is dead on. And yes baseball is Dyersville's sport, I mean it is the home of the Field of Dreams. And of course Beckman's won back to back state championships in baseball (subtle brag).

Definitely a kid that's going to be fun to root for. It seems as though the PWO's are getting better and better. I remember when when we talked last year about how Kelly thinks this is one advantage that we can kind of utilize. I like the way this is trending.

I'm really excited to see how this kid does. Great speed, good hands. Be nice to see him gain a little muscle and keep his speed. Could earn a scolly in a few years.

Anybody know what BK was referring to in his presser about not being able to talk about these kids? I understand with the LOI and being enrolled, etc., but he referenced something else about not being able to talk about, at least for one kid in particular.

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be that since walk-ons don't sign LOIs, and since they aren't technically enrolled then they could still sign an LOI with another team at this point. Even though we may tier them as "preferred walk-ons" and not scholarship recruits, there is no technical difference between a preferred walk-on today and a scholarship recruit signed three days ago. They have the same status. Can't talk about them until they officially attached to a school.

Good explanation, makes the most logical sense.

yup NSD is the only the first day kids can commit to a school so potentially any school with free spot can offer him and he can accept

So do preferred walk ons get admittance like full scholarship players, or do they have to meet regular student academic requirements?

I don't recall that being discussed before. My guess would be no. But keep in mind Admissions doesn't use hard and fast numbers for the student body. **

My understanding is preferred walk-ons don't have to qualify through tryouts to get on the team. They're on the roster.

I'd assume they also are eligibile for the tutoring/mentoring program provided to student-athletes by the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes. I believe it's not restricted to only NCAA Athletic Scholarship holders.

** Grant Hammann has a reported 4.0 GPA and Montgomery VanGorder has a 3.2.

Preferred walk-on's join the team in June whereas Walk-on's aren't given the chance to try out until the following spring

i remember this as well and it was towards 1 particular player....he said something to the effect that something had to be "cleared up"...so besides ALL of the other stuff in terms of them not being an actual enrollee or signee he couldn't elaborate more but there was more to it for 1 indv.

Are you guys thinking of this?

Q. You talked about the 85 and what's important about the 20 afterwards. You want four or five preferred walk‑ons every year; can you talk about ones you might be getting now such as Sam Bush, I believe you have a couple of quarterbacks?
COACH KELLY: I can't. The restrictions on it are they have to be‑‑ well, there's a couple of restrictions on it. They have to be admitted into school. One of them is admitted into school, but there's some other restrictions on it because of some other issues.

I have no idea what the restrictions are, other than that all but one of the PWOs aren't officially admitted yet.

Grant looks like a really good athlete though.

If he is really that fast, maybe he gets a shot at returning kicks. We've got an opening. (half-joking.)

Rhode mentioned the restriction. There is no LOI or EE (student status). The PWO's are free agents so to speak with no binding commitment to UND AT THIS TIME. The NCAA has a provision where if the PWO pays some kind of university fees that regular students are required to pay that would consititute a binding commitment. The coaches can then comment publicly about the individual.

PWOs can report in the summer when the recent LOI's arrive on campus. Regular walk-ons have to wait for walk-ons tryouts until the regular freshman students report on campus for orientation. The dates for tryouts vary with the schools as to whether it's Fall or Spring.

Yeah, this is what I was talking about.

As I said before, I get the LOI and all that. Kelly was talking about something else here; and I think it was for 1 kid in particular. This is what I was wondering about.

Probably hasn't been officially admitted yet? Injury? Just guessing here.

No, I think you are reading that wrong. Kelly can't comment on PWOs until they have been officially admitted. All but one has not been admitted. However, "other restrictions" prevent Kelly from commenting even on the one who has been admitted. BGIF just explained what those restrictions likely are ... the player has been admitted but has not yet concretely "committed" to the university.

BGIF, how do you know all this? Serious question. Direct experience? Or just years of fandom?

Odd question, but with our struggles with recruiting safeties, does anyone know how this kid progressed last year? Is he pushing for special teams time?

Bueller?

Not an odd question. I didn't even realize this guy was on the team. Hopefully he is a player.

I think you will see John Turner, James O, Devon Butler, Ashton White or even some one link Justin Brent move to safety.

hope not or we are in some trouble...john and james are not fast enough, and brent looks to be a good physical receiver
