I think ND will finish around 10 again this year. Too many SEC schools are hot spots to be right now. Then you figure FSU, tOSU, Oregon, USC, and UCLA are recruiting well also. Gonna be tough to land a top class w/ multiple 5 stars even if ND makes the playoffs.
To me it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
There is a rating bias towards the southeast right now (and it is justifiable to a degree). So when X school in the south inks the hometown boys, they get a high ranking. I am not saying the system is rigged or anything like that. But, when all else is equal, the kid in the south is going to get the higher ranking than the kid from NJ.
Case in point. Justin Jones is the 20th player overall in the state of Georgia by rivals and is inside their top 250 and plays DE. He signed with NC State over Miami. Had offers from lower tier SEC schools. Compare him to Andrew Trumbetti who is a 3 star and isn't sniffing the top 250, yet has offers from Florida, Clemson, Stanford, FSU, etc. You cannot convince me that if you take these two players and simply flip which state they play in and nothing else, that Trumbetti would still be a 3 star. I assure you their ranking would flip for nothing more than the two letters after their hometown.
For this reason, I tend to take the rankings with a grain of salt. The top 50 or so kids are usually pretty easy to identify. But from there on, I think it is more or less an educated guess based on the biases of the rater.
