Love the description people have given him of "violent."

Me too. "Street-fight football player" was my favorite quote (from his HS coach).

I've been wondering whether he might end up playing some LB for us, if we manage to reel in Vanderdoes, since we came up one LB short in the 2013 class. I just re-watched some of his tape and he can really run. He's catching long bombs behind the defense in that video. Maybe it's just me but I could definitely see him as an Ishaq-like CAT if we needed him there, unless he outgrows that position really fast.

From TJ:
His coach has indicated that Jake now is close to 6-5 and 260+ lbs...I understand perceptions and rankings and so on, but I think this kid will surprise some/many. But not himself or the staff.

I think he redshirts this year. But, I love this kid. The description of him being a violent player is just awesome.

One Foot Down has been doing their "Reviewing the Redshirts" series for the year:

Reviewing the Redshirts: DE Jacob Matuska - One Foot Down

I would think with his height and weight, he could develop into a solid 4-3 DT, but I doubt he breaks out this year.

I like him more as a prospect on the inside. I wasn't thrilled with his explosiveness and speed as a defender in high school, and although he has really long arms, his profile and ability to gain weight should fit well on the interior. This is assuming we'll see more 4-3 scheme in the future if not an outright switch in defense. He is a lankier and taller version of classmate Isaac Rochell so Matuska could easily fit in as a run-stopping defensive end in 3-4 looks.

I think he could be a very good 3-4 DE, not so much of a 4-3 DT. He is an interesting project and could be a very good player for ND.

Jacob will be functional depth on the inside (DT) and at 3-4 DE if we continue to have a hybrid D. Think Springmann.

Not sure how many times in this thread and luatuas I said Jacob at TE, but that article leans towards my prediction.

I hear what you're saying and read the article but I would be very shocked to see him as a full time TE. Maybe you throw him over there to block in short yardage or something but the kid is huge and didn't look anything like a skill position player when I last saw him. I think he will end up moving inside under BVG and will turn into a solid producer before his career is over.

So, basically all there is to say on Matuska at this point is "damn, he's big."
