So is getting Golson back, hiring BVG, keeping Elston, Alford and Cooks from leaving, adding Nyles Morgan to a very good class, and hearing Isaiah McKenzie's situation looks a lot better for ND now than it did a week or two ago.

There you go again, screwing up a perfectly good Debbie Downer comment w facts to the contrary. You people...

Updated. Now have about 4-6 open with very few realistic option and only 4 legitimate 5th year candidates BEFORE transfers.

So look at us coming into this year with around 80 players on scholarship unless we start revisiting guys we passed on or throwing out contingency offers.

This is what I feared starting a couple weeks ago and it's coming to fruition…. like every year.

We don't lead for 4 guys, none the less 6. Now is not the time that we get value out of late offers either. While some end up being guys that jump and are good. A lot of them end up being offers simply to get a body with certain measurements. A la Heggie. While I have confidence in our staff's recruiting and think they could pull some magic with guys like Braden Smith or somebody, they aren't generally going to magically pull studs with late offers.

I think we will end up signing 4'ish guys, at least two of which are guys we would never have taken two months ago. Meanwhile, we missed opportunities on guys like Hendrix because we weren't willing to take a chance that early.

The reality is that attrition, decommits and guys going pro happens every.single.year… So when the staff said that they would "oversign to the extent of attrition" I thought that they would. It certainly seems very unlikely now. I would be shocked if we even came close to 85 come spring practice, add in injuries in fall, we will end up playing with USC Sanction'esque roster levels. It's hard to compete that way.

Three-star defensive tackle Chris Nelson (Lakeland, Fla./Victory Christian) is reopening his recruitment, he told ESPN.com in a text message Friday.

Notre Dame first contacted Nelson on Friday morning, and an offer could be coming.

“ND called today but I’m in school so I missed the phone call,” Nelson said, “but they left a message saying they want me to come to their school so I will be giving them a call today.”

Asked if the Longhorns are the new favorite, Nelson said “I’m going to take my visits first and see what’s best for my family.”

UCF and Notre Dame are in contention for the final visit from Nelson the weekend before signing day. UCF has offered the 6-foot-2, 280-pound lineman.

Size-Strength-Speed
Has just adequate overall size on paper, but looks to possess solid length and room to still pack on more good size for play in the trenches.
Versus the Run
Displays a good initial burst and can be a tough run defender. Demonstrates the ability to fire off the ball low, get under a blocker's pads and uncoil at contact with the ability to shoot his hands, stand them up and jolt them back. Is able to gain leverage, hold his ground and flashes ability to two-gap. Does need to improve upper-body strength though and do a better and more consistent job of extending and disengaging.
Pass Rush Skills
Can explode off the ball and get under blockers' pads and generate some push to press the pocket. Flashes ability to work to the shoulder, but needs to be more active with his weapons and expand his pass rush arsenal a bit more. Needs development as a pass rusher.
Toughness/Motor
Displays adequate tight box change-of-direction.
Bottom Line
It is possible that he could land on offense if not initially, then at some point in his college career and with development could contribute as a productive interior offensive lineman. Nelson shows some flashes, but with some development physically and as a player he looks best suited as a stout run defender.

I'll take that. Would love to see an offer go out since now we could reasonably take a couple DLinemen and develop them.

UCF is like 45 minutes from Lakeland. Why does he have to choose between visiting there and visiting ND?

Listed Griffin, Poona Ford, Torres, Nelson, and Sawyers as potential DTs to watch. All of them have so much less upside than Dickerson. Sigh.

poona ford:
Size-Strength-Speed
A compactly built defensive tackle prospect who is physical and at times disruptive. Has marginal height, but is a thickly built player who carries a good amount of bulk on his frame and possesses a good wingspan for his height.
Versus the Run
Can be an explosive kid who is capable of disrupting with penetration, but snap anticipation can be inconsistent and as a result he can be late off the ball at times. Lacks ideal height, but can fire out low, get under a blocker's pads with his thick, compact frame, uncoil at contact and stand him up. When he brings his hands he displays the strength to extend and shed, but needs to work to more consistently shoot his hands and utilize his reach to keep blockers off of him. Can be a physical wrap-up tackler with run-through ability.
Pass Rush Skills
As a pass rusher flashes the ability to be violent with his weapons, but needs to keep developing his hand usage. Has bull rush ability to press the pocket.
Toughness/Motor
Flashes the ability to come across the line and quickly flatten. Shows a good motor with solid range.
Bottom Line
Ford lacks ideal height and it could be a concern, but he is a thickly built and strong prospect with a good reach. Needs to be more consistent in areas and keep developing in others, but he shows flashes of being able to be a tough and at times disruptive interior D-Tackle.

Did Dickerson absolutely drop us, or is he still coming for his official visit?

Doesn't saying were gonna have USC like sanction numbers assume USC would be injury free?

If we can get Griffin and and Sawyers this would be a win for the class. Would that close out the class?

For all the talk about scholarship numbers, what are the positions in which we're concerned about depth? Defensive line, yes. By all means land two more DTs. But, if you think about it in two-year cycles, beyond that we seem to have plenty of bodies in the current and incoming freshman classes pretty much everywhere else. Am I missing something?

Like it says in the OP, only interior DL and explosive skill position player. Did a very good job of addressing needs in this class. Dickerson defection is/was big though.

Upshot for the Rest of the Class (2014 Edition)

Evaluating another new DT, Edgar Cerenord who is a teammate of McKensie. Pretty good offer list and he was excited to talk to the staff last night.

Evaluating another new DT, Edgar Cerenord who is a teammate of McKensie. Pretty good offer list and he was excited to talk to the staff last night.

Size-Strength-Speed
Cerenord is a dominant, physical player capable of creating a new line of scrimmage whether defending against the run or rushing the passer; has the size, playing strength and athleticism for the defensive tackle position at the BCS level of play; shows very good quickness when pursuing down the line and to the sideline.
Versus the Run
Plays with very good pad level, showing excellent read and react skills; combines quick hands and lower body playing strength/leverage to neutralize the one on one block at the point of attack; displays the initial quickness needed to beat blockers through the inside gap and flatten down the line in pursuit of the football; uses a quick arm over move to free himself from blockers whether working against the run or pass. This is an instinctive football player who moves through traffic and is capable of making plays in tight spaces.
Pass Rush Skills
Can dominate with his upper body power and active feet; plays strong off an opponent's shoulder while mixing in the previously mentioned quick arm over move; can collapse the pocket with his playing strength while also showing a closing burst to the quarterback.
Toughness/Motor
This guy is a tough customer with a high intensity motor; plays hard to the whistle, flashing better than average playing speed to the sideline; quite often when apparently out of a play, his desire and pursuit effort allows him to run down the ball carrier.
Bottom Line
Cerenord could use some time to polish his technical skills however early situational playing time isn't out of the question if a red shirt year is not deemed necessary.
