See I hear this all the time. An "identity" always equals the run game.

If you have a run game you have an "Identity". If you chuck it left and right than you don't.

I agree, we need an identity to shove it right down the opponent's face.

I don't think an identity necessarily needs to mean run game. Texas Tech was back to a passing team this season, chucking the ball. That's an identity. What did we do this season? We didn't particularly run the ball well every game. We didn't particularly pass well every game either. Balance is good, but I don't think we really kept anyone off balance this season.

I think he will be a guard and not a tackle, anyway he will be a good one. I will not be surprised if he pulls a Trevor Robinson and becomes in a starter next season ahead of Bivin, Montelus, McGovern, Hanratty..

Robinson didn't have anyone of the caliber of Bivin, Montelus, McGovern, or Hanratty to contend with for playing time. He was almost the presumptive leader going into his freshman season. If I recall correctly, he had a few games that he played limited time until he finally moved into the starting role. If Nelson can push past those four guys, he would have earned it, no doubt. I guess we'll see.

Respectfully disagree.

This kid has tackle all over him. Technique, frame, footwork, and wingspan all point to tackle IMO.

And, on top of what IM3 said, if he's starting OG above the others, we're in trouble.......no way he should be starting ahead of Bivin...... means wevHAVE not developed depth on the OL!!!

These days, the prototypical measures for an OT is something like 6'6 and 310, each day are lighter and more athletic.

According to combine and wikipedia:

Eric Fisher 6'7 306
Luke Joeckel 6'6 306
Taylor Lewan 6'8 309
Jake Matthews 6'5 305

He is now 6'4 and 321 (17 years old) and his feet is not one of his strength. You can not set the edge against speed rushers of 250 lbs with these measures. He probably would succeed in some way being an OT because he has the talent but he is better suited for OG IMO. Also, he has a huge nasty streak and is very aggressive, ideal for an OG.

Not worried about wikipedia and high school all star game measurements.

Also don't care about the pros, how he measures up during his 4 years at ND vs the DE/OLB/DT in college is far more important to me

To clarify, I actually do care about his measurements (not in a coonjah way though)...just not his measurements from high school events. Like at the Opening, where everybody runs a 4.5 or better. Yeah, ok. Sure.

And I put the chances of Tyler Lewan being 6'8 and 309 (as reported by wikipedia) at 0%. College football teams are bad about inflating numbers. Perhaps not as bad as high school football teams or even college basketball teams, but still pretty bad.

Exactly. This is why we had one of the lowest sack rates in the country while our undersized LT, Zach Martin, was on-duty.

He looks like he can pull exceptionally well, but he also looks like he has the skills to play tackle as well. It'll probably come down to which position is most in need at the moment.

Who cares how he grades out as a NFL prospect. If he can get the job done at 6'4 at ND for 4 years then that'd be nice.

So because he is 2 inches shorter and 11 pounds heavier than the average NFL OT he is better suited in college to play OG? You do realize that this kid is 17-18 years old and has never been in a college training program, right? Those guys weren't all that size when they were 17 either.

If he grows one inch and loses 6 pounds, then he is the same exact size as Jake Mathews... smh

I still disagree. Everyone has noted that one of this kids strengths is his athleticism. Your also comparing measurables of a highschool senior and a rookie in the NFL. You skipped a big step in there. If his 10 extra pounds and one less inch are all that's holding him from being a LT, I feel pretty good about that.
