Has been widely rumored and basically accepted that he has a shoulder injury... likely a separated shoulder.

Unrelated... coincidence or causation that Cooks takes over and Redfield spikes up the depth chart?

If Diaco is the only reason why Farley played over Redfield then good luck with that, UConn.

Awesome news! I'm really looking forward to see him play. He's going to be a great one for us in the future.

Max and Cole will take our DB crew to a new level in 2014. Butler will do big things and has a high ceiling too. Kinlaw will likely bring it as well. Exciting stuff coming I do believe.

Watkins could have an early impact, and could transition to S if he improves tackling. Add in Juju (I know it's a stretch) and the DB unit would be crazy good. I'm still holding out hope for Starks to find his way to ND at either RB or S as well.

Thoughts on his first career start?

To me he looked very tentative and little lost, which is normal. He needs a ton of work in the weight room, he looked outmatched physically today. In the other hand, when he was the "centerfielder", it seems like he can cover a ton of ground and has nice closing speed.

This. He looked like a rag doll after contact.

I kind of felt the same way. I didn't see him losing any tackles, and there were one or two hits that had to come against bigger TEs, but he did bring them to the ground. I wouldn't say they were great tackles, but there was a size disadvantage and he still got the job done. This was a good game for him to get some playing time, he can get more comfortable as he gets reps.

One OL threw him to the ground like he was a child with just one arm, the TE just destroyed him when he attempted to tackle him..

not sure if you ever played football( American football) but his angle could have had his momentum already going in that direction....i didn't notice him getting trucked by anyone...he took on a big te and tackled him from what i saw...something our other safeties have had a terrible time doing at all this year....their TE Kroft-Height6-6
Weight240 lbs. that's close to troy niklas size with a full head of steam coming at you and he tackled him...was it the best form, no but he wasn't letting go and got him down...there were only 10 completions against our secondary...bennett gave up the big ones one on one...i would say if you didn't hear his name being called throughout the game, generally that's a good thing...especially for 1st start

Redfield did not look good tackling. Whether it was strength or position. Max hasn't been ready. He wasn't KRussel or KMoore today!

My only complaint was that he needs to strap his helmet up a bit tighter. Otherwise he was okay, though he was never truly tested in pass coverage.

I'm not sure what you saw, but I thought Redfield was a vast improvement over Farley. I mean, sure, maybe they all weren't great form tackles, but he got the offensive player to the ground, or at least kept the guy wrapped so someone else could come finish him off. It was certainly better than watching Farley whiff or get shook out of his cleats. Open field tackling, as we all see on a regular basis, is incredibly difficult, and is more often than not about simply making the tackle, as opposed to how it looks. I'm a DB coach (albeit at the HS level) and what I've always taught my kids (and what I've heard from numerous college coaches at clinics) is that the bottom line is: you get the ball carrier to the ground. From there, you can teach/improve technique. Max has shown some ability to do that, which for a true freshman is nice to see. Give him the offseason in the weight room and I'm confident by the spring game he'll have far surpassed everyone else at S.

When division I offensive lineman get to the third level they lay out safeties. He took the block and his teammate made the play. No big deal. He didn't attempt a tackle, he tackled him. He doesn't need style points.

Farley would have parked his ass on the turf if he saw a ball carrier the size of that tight end break loose through the secondary.

I give him a solid C today. He had his moments. This game alone will do wonders for him going into next season.

Redfield will be fine, we can move onto more important discussions and problems........like how on earth does any parent sit down with our new D-Coordinator and not think......"do I want my son being coached by a 70's porn star" Holy cow, this guy is totally rocking a pornstache.......

I thought he did well. He was lined up on Russell's side much of the game and Rutgers went after Russell a lot (dumb idea IMO). To me the one Rutgers TD pass was where Max was the lone safety and they ran a fade to the corner and he could not get there. I think Jackson was the CB that got beat.

Russell had an awesome game.
Jackson got beat several times.
Collinsworth had a good game.
Hardy and Max had good games as well.

The BJax flameout from last year to this year really perplexes me. Anyone perform an excorcism to make sure the Ghost of Gary Gray?

Guys, he played well for a true freshman starting his first game at the most mentally difficult position on our defense.
