Now there's uplifting news, after a full season, the Secondary's Savior is no worse than the other guys. Why don't we lower the bar some more.

It was a nice swim move by a man weighing 70 more pounds.

Really? Offenses ate Zibby up as a Junior and Senior by running play action, committing him and then throwing over his head. Nobody punished ball carriers more. But he gave up frequent chunk plays. This wasn't play action in a game with multiple reads. It was a simple one on one pass drill.

BTW, how much punishment is a 194 pound FS supposed to dish out? Shumate has 20 pounds on Redfield, he CAN dish out punishment as he's as big as most ball carriers he faces. Redfield lacks the size now to do that. Next year perhaps.

Redfield was lined up against a 260 pound TE in pass coverage not a 4.4 WR. Nor was he facing a RB on 3rd and 1. The LOS was the 30 and Koyack caught it over his shoulder at the 50, 20 yards downfield. Koyack took him off the line looking right and breaking left. Koyack made the swim move, caught the perfectly placed football, AND pulled away for the Score. The BIG MAN beat the the quicker one.

Redfield has the potential Koyack used to have. Koyack with development on and off the field now makes plays. There were reasons Redfield didn't move ahead of the others on the Depth Chart during the season.

I agree with all of this but one thing. You don't think Redfield can punish someone because he is less than 200 lbs? Maybe not as much punishment but unable is not accurate imo.

I didn't suggest Redfield was the secondary's savior nor did I say he was better or worse than any other safety on the roster. I simply said the clip was not worse than what I saw on the field this year. He got beat on one rep by a taller, heavier receiver who used a nice move to get open. And I agreed with Wooly, it's impossible to assess the situation (safety situation) after watching a short clip of practice.

Getting beat deep b/c you refuse to read your keys is far different than a player getting beat by an opposing player b/c of a size or strength advantage. If Max or any other safety simply cannot cover a tight end due to his size, you make a defensive adjustment. If a player can't help but guess and not read his keys, you sit him on the bench and play someone else.

Hopefully as much as a 198 pound Ed Reed did at Miami.

Redfield was lined up against a 260 pound TE in pass coverage not a 4.4 WR. Nor was he facing a RB on 3rd and 1. What's your point? He got beat, turned his hips and recovered. The whistle blew with Max's hand on Koyack's hip. Did you want him to lunge at his knees to stop him from scoring?

It's a one on one drill that clearly favors the offensive player. Max was playing two yards off the line of scrimmage. If it wasn't a one on one situation, he'd have a safety over the top about 15 to 20 yards deep. Hopefully the opposing QB takes that shot - it's a high risk, low percentage throw.

Redfield has the potential Koyack used to have. Koyack with development on and off the field now makes plays. There were reasons Redfield didn't move ahead of the others on the Depth Chart during the season.

I never second guessed the staff for not playing Max. I suggested the safeties didn't play well this year. It doesn't take a football guru to figure it out.

Supposedly working with 1s and in line for serious PT per Sampson?

Please watch from 1:10 for the next couple plays and tell me the coaches are crazy for not playing him...

Classic person watching 2 reps of practice and jumping to post something about him not looking good. No comments on the great play he made on Niklas in the practice at the Giants facility?

Looking forward to him getting some serious PT against Rutgers if the report is true.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas, Irish fans | Inside the Irish

Irish Illustrated’s Tim Prister spent some time inside the Giants practice facility, and Prister reports ($) that freshman safety Max Redfield appears to be making a move up the depth chart. That’s music to the ears of Irish fans that have been waiting for the five-star safety to get on the field, after mostly moonlighting on special teams.

The staff has had a long look at Redfield over the bowl practice schedule, and adding some athleticism to the secondary will be a priority after a fairly underwhelming season at safety. It should be interesting to see how reps are spread between Austin Collinsworth, Matthias Farley, Eilar Hardy, Elijah Shumate and Redfield during the bowl, and see if that plays into a spirited competition that’s sure to take place this spring.

Made two nice plays at 1:10 and 1:20

Definite PI on that play. Had his arm wrapped around Koyack's hip and turned him as he made a play for the ball. Even Koyack at the end motioned for the flag. Nonetheless, still looks to be getting in the right spots.

If he gets significant PT in the bowl and absolutely kills it, I'm gonna be pissed. Not because he showed how good he can be, but because he sat all year while we had mediocre safety play.

I'd rather have a PI called than him slamming on the brakes when running towards tackling the RB on the 6 yard line...... I'm still livid about that damn play.

Yep. Imagine being in the film room watching that crap with others players and coaches. I bet it was awkward for farley and a quiet WTF from everyone else.

Pass interference requires the safety to be athletic enough to be close enough to make a play, something Farley cannot do. I'll live with a couple of PI calls.

I have a feeling there was a lot of that this past year.

Ironman posted a few weeks back about believing that Farley may have an injury we don't know about. I tend to go along with that, Farley didn't "put on the brakes" last year. He didn't get tentative for no reason. JMHO

I have heard this excuse a lot this season and I agree this may be a reason for his poor play. However, I don't care. If he's hurt and it's hurting the team that bad, why wasn't he pulled? The safety position was the bane of my existence this season. The coaching decisions back there dumbfounded me all season. Granted, I was dumbfounded this morning trying to remember if it was me or the fiance who took out the recycle. It doesn't take much.

Farely is plenty athletic to make the play, I believe he leads all safeties in INT's the last two years. That's not saying much but he is usually in the right spot he just had very very poor tackling fundamentals. Not wrapping up, putting his head down when approaching ball carrier, not breaking down as he closes in, etc. Very rarely was he getting beat in one on one scenarios because of athleticism.

Has been widely rumored and basically accepted that he has a shoulder injury... likely a separated shoulder.

Unrelated... coincidence or causation that Cooks takes over and Redfield spikes up the depth chart?

Causation, no doubt in my mind.
