I have no desire to state my opinion on what he said but I will tell you that he could care less about that show. He made a fortune in the hunting industry. Not just duck calls. He was fairly popular in the hunting community before DD. Their hunting videos are very popular (always were) because of the production and filming quality.

I hunt and have several friends that hunt. We watched the show when it first aired and we were not impressed. We commented on how it would probably be huge in prime time reality tv and sort of wondered why they would do it. They certainly don't need the money. Now it appears that they may be using it as a way to "preach".

I know one of the sons routinely travels to various churches to speak (preach).

YUP! Never needed A&E, and since DD, he seems to be doing the same things he was before...even in his faith-based sermons, he still worms in how stupid Stuttgart is...that hasn't changed in near 20 years...:)

I really didn't want to respond to this but I just couldn't resist.
To the bolded. When you go to the bathroom do you strip naked at the urinal? I don't see how this has anything to do with gay or straight. I am struggling to wrap my mind around your issue with it.

There is a lot more that I would like to see but I will leave it at this for the moment.

First off I want to state that this was just a point I brought up for discussion about problems that are and could be on full acceptance of homosexuality. It's not meant to be a put down, but the issues are there whether we believe it or not.

Your right we don't strip naked so why are we not sharing restrooms with women? It's a partner thing right? It's a sexual attraction thing right? How does it not have anything to do with gay or straight. People thus far have passed this up as if there wasn't an issue to begin with. The only reason there hasn't been because the gay community was not as open as they are now. I'm guessing for full acceptance whatever that may be this would come up as an issue. This is still an issue that with kids whether they be gay or straight a parent would have to deal with.

Also to the one saying why don't we change this thread to the "We support the Billionaire Homophobic". Really? I feel homophobic to be some what derogatory towards people who don't fully support homosexuality. Also this is usually brought up by someone more unwilling to be open than the said "Homophobic's".

I don't know why people can't agree to disagree. Homosexuals are living pretty good right now. If you don't think so talk to your parents.

Also as one of my Gay friends mentioned we have a lot more problems in this country than gay marriage and Gay progression.

I personally have no use for the Council of Bishops. (I think Francis has been addressing a lot to them lately, under the guise of softening their hearts.)

There is no conclusive proof that a child does any better with a specific configuration of parent units. A child does better with a loving and well adjusted parent. It can be one, or it can be two. It can be anything from all male to all female. And it all can be proven with studies.

Hypocrisy spoiler : Between 30 and 40 percent of girl children are sexually abused. Between 25 and 30 percent of boy children are sexually abused. Over 60 percent of children in America have suffered some form of neglect, abandonment, or have been routinely ignored by parents or guardians.

Can you imagine if someone actually conducted this kind of study? Something tells me the LGBT would have something to say about it.

For the second part of your post. I just can't fathom this. That's nearly half of girl children. I would like to know where you pulled these numbers.......for my heart's sake I hope your ass. It’s despicable!

In my opinion, that's a poor criterion, i.e., "it's not as bad as it was." It's not as good as it should be. That means it's important to keep fighting.

I'm saying that when people purposely verbalize ideas that they know are going to be offensive to one or more group of people, and they say it anyway, they should accept that there will be pushback. A person who does this is demonstrating a lack of respect for others. They lack civility and deserve to be called out for it.

You mean like every Priest, pastor, rabbi, reverend, mayor, governor, senator, congressman, judge, president, civil rights leader, etc...they all lack civility and respect for others? Ok buddy.

What do you mean by conclusive??.. because there is more than enough data to at least strongly suggest, as strongly as any other assertion in here, that children raised by two parents absolutely tend to do 'better'... Gay, straight or whatever... Not that there aren't great single parents out there ( before one of you overly sensitive bastards brand me a 'single parent hater')

If the priest, pastor, rabbi or reverend said that gays are morally bankrupt, I think there would be a backlash. There have been many cases in which these men of God have been called out for saying things that crossed a line. There are literally daily cases of politicians being called out for saying stupid or objectionalble things, especially when they demonstrate a lack of civility. Almost as often they come out and apologize publically for saying the thing that got them into trouble in the first place. Simple disagreement is not what we are talking about in this case. This guy equated gays with those who practive beastiality. That is an offensive and stupid thing to say, no matter who says it or who they say it to. It is especially dumb to do in an interview with a national publication. That represents not only a lack of judgment but a lack civility as well.

First of all.. Again, he didn't compare homosexuality to beastality. You keep saying it, but it isn't true. Just because he listed them together, doesn't mean he compared them. If you say this again, then you are being intellectually dishonest if you don't mention that heterosexual promiscuity was also in that list. So if homexuality is being equated with beastality, then he also equated it to heterosexual promiscuity.

Second of all. Politicians, priests, etc are absolutely not getting called out daily. Where? Because last time I checked, worse viewpoints can be heard daily in churches around the country. Any time gay rights are talked about in politics, these same types of comments are made. Your comments stating that all of these people quickly apologize is completely untrue. The majority of people that have been outspoken on this topic that I can think of, are in fact steadfast in their beliefs.

Finally, just for the record, I don't agree with Phil's views on homosexuality. I am just pointing out the hypocrisy of those trying to demonize him to the point of trying to manipulate his comments to fit your narrative.

I took government class as a senior in high school. To fulfill the class requirements we had to do volunteer work for a specified amount of hours. A friend and I decided to volunteer at a local horse place (its a small charity facility that allows disabled children connect with horses and ride them.) We were raking leaves to help clean up the grounds. We heard a horse 'nah' several times as there were several in the barns and yard around us. Then we hear this loud and awkward 'nah'. We both turn an look and there is a horse attempting to mount another one with its banana swinging around. We instantly turned our rakes in and left the grounds. It scarred me for some time. That has nothing to do with this topic, I just felt the need to share.

I keep asking this question with no response. WHAT IS GOOD AS IT SHOULD BE??????

Studies have shown that the majority of Americans believe Gay marriage should be accepted as well as having the "live and let live" attitude.

Outside of Gay marriage what is left? You can't force people to fully accept in something they believe to be wrong. Homosexuality is a different fight than previous.

He did equate homosexuality to beasiality AND heterosexual promiscuity. I never said anything different. Why do you suppose he listed them together? You think it was just an accident or a slip of the tounge, or do you think that he fully intended them to be compared. At any rate, someone who is homosexual isn't making the conscious decision to sleep around or to have sex with an animal. They are people who have a different sexual orientation. He grouped things that are immoral behaviors in his mind with a natural occurrance in humanity. That's what makes what he said offensive.

On the bolded part, you can't be serious. Do you own a television? Turn on Fox News or MSNBC at any hour of the day and you will see dumb and often wildly offensive statements being made and then walked back in the days following the outrage that the statements created. It happens all the time in politics. But, I'm the one who is being intellectually dishonest? Okay.

I'm not trying to demonize anyone ... I simply said he made stupid, offensive comments and deserves the backlash that those statements brings. It's really just as simple as that to me. Truth is I never watched his show and only knew him as a guy on a television show before this story broke. If he was a stock broker from Maine, a doctor from Seattle, or a truck deiver from Delaware, I'd have the exact same opinion. The world needs a little more civility in it.

You serious, Clark? So you are going to defend this absurd belief that Phil, with dastardly intent, gave this interview in order to proclaim with vigor that homosexuality=beastiality=hetorosexual promiscuity? For real... Step back and think about how bizarre of a thought that is...

I'm dead serious. Show us some of these "daily events" of celebrities and politicians backing away from comments connecting homosexuality to sin. I have never heard Kirk Cameron back off of his comments (far worse than Phil's as well). Shoot, Mitt Romney was confronted by a homosexual veteran on the campaign trail regarding his beliefs on homosexuals and Mitt, knowing he was being filmed, reiterated his beliefs right to his face. Again, over 40% of Americans feel this way. People say offensive comments regarding homosexuality, but it is clearly a rarity for celebs/athletes/politicians to apologize for simply calling homosexuality a sin.

Then where is your outrage? Per the Huff Post, 37% of this country believe that homosexuality is a sin (per Lifeway poll) and 43% of Americans do not think they should be married (galloup poll). So where is your outrage for the numerous politicians that debate this? I even believe that you voted for Romney? No outrage from you regarding him telling a homosexual veteran that he shouldn't be able to marry because of his religious beliefs? Where is your outrage for the Catholic Church, who openly call it a sin? See where I am going here?

I grew up on a farm in a town of 2500 people, rarly had shoes on growing up (mostly cause it was to expensive to keep in in em all the time), I hunt, I fish, I drive a chevy truck with a lift kit, I'm a Christian. I also graduated from a 4 yr college, where I played football, I have a wonderful job for one of the worlds largest humanitarian organizations and I am flat out offended by the derogatory remarks like "backwards thinking" "hillbilly", "redneck" and believe that anyone who uses the bigoted, class motivated, derogatory comments should face that same backlash as Mr. Robertson and be "suspended" from IE for lack of civility.

So what you're saying is that anyone that doesn't walk lock step with your views of homosexuality is a bigot? That you cannot see it as a sin, otherwise you an awful person?

That's ridiculous.

Correct. One group determines what's acceptable and the rest shall abide by those guidelines. Or else...

Ignorant because they single out a group of people and say thier way of life is sinful. At the very least, he should have the sense to understand that saying something like this in a national venue is going to be viewed as an attack on some people. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics. The issue here is just plain civility.

1) People's definition of civility will vary. Who was more civil: Phil Robertson or Martin Bashir?

2) I cant believe this guy is being slammed for one opinion he has.

3) Why aren't gays and their supporters just as mad at Alec Baldwin? His comments were far worse.

Not only that opinion, but his overall message was, "Yea, I think it's a sin, but it's not for me to judge, I love everyone anyway. Let God sort it out."

In this whole debacle, he's the ONLY person that has been tolerant of other viewpoints. He doesn't agree with them, but he doesn't let that affect the way he actually treats these people. Guess that isn't enough anymore.

Simple. When there are equal protections and benefits for gay people and gay couples under the law. That's simply not the case right now.

Great article that is more about the debate then the occurence...some points fro it I thought were noteworthy...

...Pope Francis, Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2013, has previously called gay marriage the work of the devil and “a total rejection of God’s law engraved on our hearts.” Judging by Thursday’s precedent, A&E would fire the pope. And if his public statements on the subject are to be believed, the President of the United States would also receive a pink slip prior to his change of heart in May of last year.

--------------------------------------

Speaking on the issue of tolerance, mega-church pastor and bestselling author Rick Warren observed:
"Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear them or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate."

Tolerance is not the same thing as acceptance, and acceptance is not the same thing as an endorsement. The message A&E’s decision sends is that there is zero tolerance on television for Christians who are conscientious objectors to homosexuality. More than that, it implicitly suggests that the campaign for tolerance has advanced to a campaign to pressure 45 percent of Americans to recant their beliefs and endorse a lifestyle to which they are opposed, conscience be damned.

-------------------------------------------------------

We stand at a crossroads. The country must decide. Is the endgame here to be that orthodox Christians will henceforth have no voice within their own culture? If so, does this mean we have become a nation of bullies, forcing conformity while calling it tolerance?

-------------------------

And I know I shouldn't do it, but I will in regards to Go's and Wooly's debate within the debate...
Yes, Phil DID "equate" homosexuality and bestiality, HOWEVER it was equating the same to a promiscuity...killing...not honoring thy father and mother...taking the Lord's name in vain...etc...he equated them as sin only... so the eqating was that of ALL actions considered sins.

Also, the only "walking back" or apologizing for comments I see on the news are from public figures for using pejorative terms for people of the LGBT community (see Alec Baldwin's multiple infractions). However, I do not see people apologizing for their views on the subject...just certain terms they have used.

For the second part of your post. I just can't fathom this. That's nearly half of girl children. I would like to know where you pulled these numbers.......for my heart's sake I hope your ass. It’s despicable!

When did I ever treat you with such disrespect?

So I though I would pull out some statistics. When we work with populations, we are taught to add in the estimate of underreported. Also, we are taught to add for grandpa groping tits and ass. Things that may not be considered by the "criminal stats." What you need to know that anyone who sexually abuses a child, and hires a "good enough" attorney who is willing to "further victimize" the victim, is not counted either. And, we are taught, this is the major reason that more sexual abuse takes place in lower socioeconomic groups. They cannot hire the good legal help.

Here is a report I pulled out of my ass for you. Shows you that it is worse (more despicable) than you thought :

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

INTRODUCTION

Child sexual abuse is the sexual exploitation or victimization of a child by an adult, adolescent, or older child. The difference in age and sexual knowledge between a child and an older person makes informed consent to sexual activity impossible.

Sexual abuse includes a range of behaviors, including vaginal, anal, or oral penetration, fondling, exhibitionism, prostitution, and photographing a child for pornography. The sexual activity does not necessarily involve force. Children are often bribed or verbally coerced into sexual acts.

Child protective service and law enforcement statistics do not present the full extent of child sexual abuse since children often do not tell anyone of sexual abuse.

Incest is sexual relations between family members. Relatives may include parents, stepparents, siblings, uncles, grandparents and other blood relations as defined by law. Incest constitutes abuse when the child is unable to give informed consent to sexual activity due to the authority of the relative, the child's dependency and lack of power, and/or the difference in ages between the child and the relative.

STATISTICS

One in three girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.

Over a third of all sexual assaults involved a victim who was under the age of 12.

An estimated 906,000 children were victims of maltreatment in the United States in 2003. 10% of the children were found to be victims of sexual abuse.

Of the 22.3 million adolescents in the United States today, 1.8 million have been victims of serious sexual assault.
Between 300,000 and 400,000 U.S. children are victims of the sex trade each year, from juvenile pornography and street prostitution to selling sex at school.

A survey of high school adolescents showed that 17% of girls were physically abused and 12% were sexually abused, while 12% of boys were physically abused and 5% were sexually abused.

Approximately 1 in 5 female students reported being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.

For 60% of “sexually active” girls under 14, their only sexual experience has been a rape.

The Women’s Safety Project survey reported the following results regarding child abuse:

• 17% of women reported at least one unwanted sexual contact (narrowly defined) by a relative before the age of 16. This suggests that approximately 1 in 6 girls have been sexually abused by a relative in childhood.
• 34% of women reported at least one unwanted sexual contact by a nonrelative before age 16, suggesting that 1 in 3 girls is sexually abused by a nonrelative in childhood.
In total, 42% of women reported at least one experience of incestuous and/or extrafamilial sexual abuse before age 16. 27% were sexually abused before age 8.
If a broader definition is used, including unwanted kisses, nongenital sexual touching, or noncontact experiences such as having someone masturbate in front of them, 53.8% of women reported an unwanted sexual experience before age 16.

AGE

More than half (54 percent) of female victims and nearly three quarters (71 percent) of male victims were first raped before their 18th birthdays.

61% of rape victims were sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
29% of all forcible rapes occurred when the victims were under 11 years old.

In a 1991 survey conducted by the National Victim Center, 29% of all forcible rapes occurred when the victims were under 11 years old. Another 32% occurred when the victims were between 11 and 17.

Nearly 30% of child sexual assault victims identified by child protective services agencies in 1995 were between 4 and 7 years of age.

In a national random survey, 27% of women and 16% of men disclosed that they had been sexually abused as children. The median age for girls was 9.6 years and for boys was 9.9 years.

40% of men incarcerated for rape said their victims were children; 80% said their victims were under age 18.

In a study of 4,295 convicted child sex abusers, 60% of the victims were age 13 or younger.

DISABILITIES

Almost half of adult women with disabilities report that they were sexually abused as children, compared with 34% of non-disabled women.

90% of girls and women referred to the Seattle Rape Relief Disabilities Project had been abused by relatives or individuals they knew.

A study of 482 children with documented maltreatment evaluated at the Center for Abused Handicapped Children at Boys Town Research Hospital in Omaha, NE, reveals that more than half (53.4%) of the deaf children report being sexually abused.
In a study of 150 interviewed deaf youth at a residential school, 75 children reported being sexually abused, 19 reported being victims of incest, and 3 reported both physical and sexual abuse.

GENDER

Of child sexual abuse victims identified by child protective services agencies in 1995, 75% were girls and 25% were boys.

Girls are sexually abused three times more often than boys, according to the Third National Incidence Study. Boys are more likely to be seriously injured or die as a result of their abuse.

Juvenile victims of sexual assault were more likely to be male (18%) than were adult victims (4%). Nearly a quarter (27%) of the victims under age 12 were male.

One in six boys may be sexually abused at least once before age 18, with the median age of the first abusive episode being 9.9. 20% are abused by women and 80% by men.

A nationwide study of nearly 3,000 male college students found that 7.3% reported having an abusive sexual experience before the age of 14.

A survey of men revealed that 14% had been forced or coerced into sexual activity before they were 14 years old. The median age of their perpetrator was 27 years of age.

Boys who have been sexually abused by relatives are 15 times more likely to be sexually abused as are other boys.
RACE

In a 1994 survey, 44.8% of African-American women, 38% of white women, 25.6% of Latina women and 21.1% of Asian-American women had histories of child sexual abuse.
A study by Wyatt and Russell found that African-American victims of child sexual abuse are often more severely abused, with more use of force, than Caucasian children. The African-American girls also are more often abused by relatives other than their fathers; often the offender is an uncle. African-American girls are sexually abused at about the same rate as Caucasian girls.

OFFENDERS

CHARACTERISTICS

99% of persons incarcerated for sexual assault or rape are men. About 35% were sexually assaulted or abused as children.

93% of child sexual abuse offenders are men.

Most men who abuse boys define their sexual orientation as heterosexual.

In a study of sexually abused girls, only 6.2% were abused by women.

1/3 of convicted sex offenders were sexually abused as children.

Adults were the offenders in 60% of the sexual assaults of youth under age 12.

The typical child sex offender abuses an average of 117 children, most of whom do not report the abuse.

OFFENDER’S RELATIONSHIP TO VICTIM

Strangers were the offenders in just 3% of sexual assaults against victims under age 6 and 5% of the sexual assault victimizations of youth ages 6 through 11.

Of sexually abused girls, 53% are abused by their biological fathers; 15% by stepfathers, and 8.8% by uncles.
11% of rape victims are raped by their fathers or stepfathers; another 16% are raped by other relatives.

70% of incarcerated sexual abusers knew their victims. 40% said their victim was a child; 80% reported that the victim was under age 18.

31% of women surveyed were sexually abused by a non-relative; of these, 20% were abused before age 14. 43% of the non-family abusers were boyfriends, 42% were acquaintances, and 11% were strangers.

31% of women surveyed were sexually abused by someone outside the family; of these, 20% were abused before the age of 14.

Offenders outside the family are often acquaintances of the victim. In one survey, 11% were strangers, 42% were casual acquaintances, and 43% were boyfriends.

A survey of 4,340 adults examining sexual attitudes and experiences reported that 4.1 percent of respondents had a physical sexual experience with a teacher.

SPECIAL ISSUES

INTERNET

Child pornography reports to CyberTipline, a congressionally mandated mechanism for monitoring child sexual exploitation, jumped 39 percent in 2004.

Year Child Pornography Tips
1998 3,267
1999 7,736
2000 16,724
2001 21,611
2002 37,647
2003 76,178
2004 106,119

Based on interviews with a nationally representative sample of 1,501 youth ages 10 to 17 who use the Internet regularly during a one-year timeframe:

• Approximately one in five received a sexual solicitation or approach over the Internet.
• One in four had an unwanted exposure to pictures of naked people or people having sex.
• One in seventeen was threatened or harassed.
• Fewer than 10% of sexual solicitations and only 3% of unwanted exposure episodes were reported to authorities such as a law-enforcement agency.
• About one quarter of the youth who encountered a sexual solicitation or approach told a parent. Almost 40% of those reporting an unwanted exposure to sexual material told a parent.

Law enforcement at all levels made an estimated 2,577 arrests during the 12 months starting July 1, 2000, for Internet sex crimes against minors.

More than 20,000 images of child pornography are posted on the Internet every week.

PREGNANCY

The rate of pregnancy among children and adolescents who have been sexually abused is significantly higher than that of non-victims:

• 66% of pregnant adolescents reported being sexually abused at some point in their lives.
• 62% were abused prior to their pregnancies.
• 30% had been raped.
• 44% had been victims of attempted rape.
• More than 50% were victimized by family members, most often stepfathers.
• Between 11% and 20% of the girls were pregnant as a direct result of rape.
• More than 3/4 of the sexual assaults against the girls involved force or threat of force, such as rape at knifepoint.
• At least 3/5 of the girls had been severely physically abused as well.

2/3 of births to teenage girls are fathered by men age 20 or older.
60% of girls who had sex before age 15 were coerced by males averaging 6 years their senior.

PROSTITUTION

Between 300,000 and 400,000 American children and youth are victimized by sexual exploitation each year.

66% of all prostitutes were sexually abused as children. Of those, 2/3 were abused by fathers, stepfathers, or foster fathers and 10% were abused by strangers.

The odds of a child sexual abuse victim being arrested for prostitution are 27.7 times higher than for a non-victim.

Men and women who have been raped or forced to have sex in childhood or adolescence are four times more likely to have worked in prostitution compared with people who have not been abused.

RITUAL SEXUAL ABUSE

Ritual abuse consists of the sadistic acts that accompany sexual abuse; and/or sexual abuse that occurs in conjunction with group acts of worship; and/or acts committed as a means of intimidating children to make them compliant victims and to keep their testimony from being believed.

David Finkelhor has defined three types of ritual abuse. These are:

• Cult-based ritual abuse: This type of sexual abuse is a means of inducing a mystical or religious experience in the abuser, and involves an elaborate belief system or ideology.
• Pseudo-ritual abuse: Children are exploited through psychological, sadistic intimidation to inhibit disclosure of the abuse. Costumes and animal sacrifices are two of the methods used to frighten children into submission. Pornography is usually involved.
• Psychopathological ritualism: The abuser is an obsessive, sadistic individual, rather than a group concerned with religious or other experience.

Ritual aspects of sexual abuse may include ceremonies, torture of children or animals, frightening costumes, group sex, and/or animal sacrifice. Some of the most grotesque acts witnessed by a child may be simulations designed to intimidate the child into submission and discredit his or her testimony.
Most people's initial reaction to accounts of ritual abuse is disbelief. It may be difficult to accept reports of child victims and adult survivors who say they witnessed human sacrifices or were sexually tortured or put in underground coffins. Nonetheless, considering a child's literal interpretation of events and lack of broad factual knowledge, there is an amazing consistency to the stories of ritually abused children. Children across the country who have never met each other cite instances of sexual abuse, animal torture, chants, threats to parents and/or pets, and consumption of human waste, blood and body fluids.

Some ritual abuse experts maintain that body parts and fluids are consumed during rituals, with no evidence remaining. Other experts believe sacrifice rituals are usually staged, using dolls or stuffed animals as a form of psychological manipulation. Children also may be given drugs that alter their perceptions.

PREVALENCE

It is impossible to estimate the prevalence of ritual sexual abuse because many child victims and adult survivors do not reveal that they were abused. Victims fear they will not be believed, expect to be labeled crazy, and fear retaliation by the offender(s).

In one group of 500 child sexual abuse victims, 55 were victims of ritual sexual
abuse:

• 11 were victims of “pseudo-ritual” abuse, involving threats, group sex, drugs, and consumption of human waste.
• 10 were “private” rituals in which the behavior was committed by one perpetrator and was ritualized for personal, sadistic reasons.
• 32 were organized, group rituals. Out of these 32, four were intergenerational. Eight involved children taken into group ritual abuse situations by their parents, and 20 children were victims of extrafamilial ritual abuse that occurred outside of the home. Nineteen of these extrafamilial cases occurred in day care centers, and one in a Boy Scout troop.

13% of child sexual abuse cases in day care included ritual aspects.

LAW IN ILLINOIS

In 1992, the Illinois Ritual Abuse of Children Task Force assisted in the passage of legislation that makes ritual abuse a specific crime. It is now a felony to involve a child in actual or simulated ritually abusive acts. The law enhances penalties for child sexual abuse with ritually abusive aspects.

OFFENDERS WHO COMMIT RITUAL ABUSE

Ritual abuse is often initiated by family members who abuse their own children. These abusers may have been abused as children themselves.

One study found that 64% of ritual abuse perpetrators are women. In standard child sexual abuse cases, about 75% of the perpetrators are men.

The social background of the abusers is often upper-middle-class or middle-class, and includes people from all professions.

IMPACT ON THE VICTIM

INITIAL EFFECTS

Psychological reactions that children exhibit following sexual abuse include fear, anger, hostility, guilt and shame, low self-esteem, anxiety, early overt sexual behavior, and behavioral disturbances (such as running away and truancy).

Sexually abused children are often further exploited by others in emotionally and physically dangerous ways. In one study, 10% of sexually abused adolescents exchanged sex for money; 9% exchanged sex for shelter, 7% exchanged sex for drugs or alcohol.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS

Psychological effects of child sexual abuse often last into adulthood. Adult survivors of child sexual abuse may exhibit depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, dissociation, and low self- esteem.

40% of child sexual abuse victims seek mental health treatment after reaching adulthood.

Survivors of incest may have particularly severe problems, especially if the offender was a father or stepfather.

53% of adult survivors of incest said the abuse caused “some” or “great” long-term psychological effects.
The duration of sexual abuse affects the severity of psychological trauma. The following percentages of survivors called their abuse “extremely traumatic”: 73% whose abuse lasted more than 5 years, 62% whose abuse lasted 1 week to 5 years, and 46% who experienced one incident of abuse.

11% of pregnant adolescents reported becoming pregnant as a result of sexual assault, mostly incest.
Victims suffer more long-term trauma when they are sexually abused by adults, rather than by adolescents.

REVICTIMIZATION

55.4% of women who reported childhood sexual abuse also reported being subsequently raped. Revictimization occurred for only 20.2% of rape victims who did not report being sexually abused as children. Child sexual assault victims were 4.7 times more likely to be subsequently raped. Women who were both physically and sexually abused as children reported the highest rates of subsequent rapes.

18% of women who reported being raped before age 18 said they were also raped after age 18, compared with 9% of women who did not report childhood rape.

REPORTING

REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE

Many children who are sexually abused do not tell anyone of the abuse. Often, the crime is never reported to the police. In one survey, 42% of all respondents who were sexually abused told someone of the abuse within a year; 21% told someone at some point after a year had passed, 36% never told anyone. Only 3% reported the crime to police.

In a survey conducted by Diana Russell, only 2% of incest cases and 6% of extrafamilial child sexual abuse cases were reported to the police.

Simple. When there are equal protections and benefits for gay people and gay couples under the law. That's simply not the case right now.

Maybe this will help. At least to understand me. My insatiable curiosity keeps me from taking much of anything at face value.

So when I hear oversimplified jingoistic-dogma being preached as truth, I see it for what it is emotional heroin for those not strong enough to deal with the ugly that is really in the world.

Ever hear that expression, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions?" There are a lot of good intentions in having simple answers for complex problems. But instead, get some good questions and walk a mile in one of these victim's shoes.

Happy Holidays!

1) People's definition of civility will vary. Who was more civil: Phil Robertson or Martin Bashir?

2) I cant believe this guy is being slammed for one opinion he has.

3) Why aren't gays and their supporters just as mad at Alec Baldwin? His comments were far worse.

1. You didn't hear me defend Martin Bashir. I think he's a tool and he deserved what he got, too.

2. First off, I don't think anyone is slamming him. At least I'm not. I'm saying he said something ignorant and that he has to live with the fallout for it. Romney, who apparently I voted for according to wooly (which is funny), had to live with his 47 percent comment, as did the idiot who talked about legitimate rape, as did virtually every other public figure who said something stupid. Some care that they offended people and some don't. Usually, there is a public relations recognition that makes them walk their statements back and try to repair the damange that they've done to themselves.

3. I despise Alec Baldwin and have for years -- long before he belittled his daughter on an a voicemail, calling her a pig because she didn't call him on time and long before his comments on MSNBC. When I was in the Navy and stationed on the USS Enterprise, he was on board to film Hunt for Red October and he was a total dick to most everyone on the crew.
