The mail is a marketing tool for ND. Sure the ultimate goal is to help recruit the kid. But they know the kid isnt going to read all the pieces. But Dalton Schultz's video has over 25,000 views, think of all the threads/articles/tweets/facebook posts/etc across the country. ND is in the news. ND is being talked about. Thats the underlying goal of the campaign.

It's more of a sales tool IMO. You sell the recruit with OV's, in house visits by the coaches and correspondence like the letters. However, TP what you point out is a very good point for the marketing side reaching the masses. Anyway you look at it, it's a great tool.

ITTC, I understand what you're saying. Other schools may do this already, but maybe the recruits wonder why ND isn't showing the same type of love with the little things like this? Sometimes it's the little things that make a difference, especially when all else is equal.

Barton Simmons from 247 was on Bill King's show this morning and said that ND is the clear favorite. He believes Ole Miss is full at linebacker and definitely aren't pursuing Morgan as hard. He thinks it's between us and Vanderbilt.

Where I disagree with you is that I don't think it is all that creative. Other schools like Kentucky are doing the same kind of thing. Don't get me wrong, I would do handstands if I received that kind of love from Notre Dame, but an offer on it's own would blow me away far more than any cutesy trick like this. But I agree that the ND degree has to be a major factor, otherwise why would the kid go to a school where he will have to work his butt off to pass? There are plenty of football factories where a player can focus on football alone.

That's YOU, a lifetime ND fan. I doubt there are any statistics on this but I am willing to bet that out of 85 kids, maybe 10 of them grew up lifetime fans where just the offer was enough.

to add to TP's post...

For all those who think it is cringeworthy and not sure about it, let me say this, I would doubt if it went past this year. If it did, it might go thru next year at best, but you can't do it too much because it is meant as an attention grabber and if it is done all the time, then it won't accomplish that goal.

You're absolutely right.

We can only do that business one (maybe two) cycles, or it just gets silly.

Good on our recruiting staff for doing it this time though.

You can insult all you want. This is not a black and white issue. If you think calling someone "unreasonable" is going to convince anyone of anything you are quite incorrect. What is unreasonable is the refusal to recognize that a rational person can have different opinions from yourself.

The point is I don't think your opinion is rational. If you think saying someone's opinion is "odd" and "unreasonable" is an insult, you (a) haven't been on this site long enough; (b) need thicker skin. You can have the last word as I'm now done with this topic.

Agree, that's where his creativity will come into play. He'll need to find a new attention grabber that doesn't violate the rules. They can't send anything with an ND logo that can be construed as merchandise, so that limits the possibilities.

To elaborate, here's it getting pub on USA Today: What's in ND's #PotOfGold?

I get the premise of Irish To The Core about the hypothetical person who would pick a school on mail. But the fact is, that person doesn't exist... and the way ND has been approaching direct mail with Sandlin at the helm has been creative and effective in all of its goals. You want to stand out. You want to communicate your message to prospects. The way we're going our mail right now is an A+.

Well, me in the twenties thinks this is a great waste of paper. Me
at 17 would have flipped out and commit on the spot.

The point of view of a rational adult is not the same as an excited teenager. We have to always keep that in mind when we address recruiting.

Yes these could be just fill for a garbage dump. However, if the recruits keeps the packages in its originals box, take exceptional care of the package and goes to ND, become a star and win a NC, these packages would become extremely valuable. Especially the latest batch that has come out. They are 477 cards that are "ND Football" cards of former ND players who went to the NFL.

I believe after these kids graduate as stars and as great kids and then depending on their NFL careers, these packages could bring quite a load of cash to a collector of ND memorabilia.

Conversely, I was hardly rational during my twenties.;)

I'm all for it. I'm 27, so even I'm far removed from what's cool and hip for a 16/17/18 year old.

To an unbiased eye, do you know who Notre Dame is appealing to? 40-year old men who 'get it'. Not 17 year old, elite athletes (insert exception to rule here ____________).

I applaud any and every effort ND does to keep their values and also become 'cool' for lack of better term.

Hello All! First post here.

Im all for ND recruiting. A part of me dislikes this because in my own selfish way, I see ND well above other universities. I can see a UK or UCLA or FL doing this (mass mail). To me, the opportunity to go to a great university such as ND speaks for itself. However, I do realize that stance is what got ND in touble with the Willingham era recruit wise. While I highly treasure ND for ND, others may not. Especially in a society where we live in that screams instant gratification and measures an university's worth in numbers of NCs that it has one recently rather than what the school actually does for someone post playing days.

But again, if it works, maybe the end justifies the means?

Good first post.

It's not like ND is sending 477 letters saying "Come to ND because we're the best!". The letters contain 477 representations of ND student-athletes reaching the pinnacle of athletics. I think mass mailing is rather tacky too, but this is a classed up version of mass mail.

Speaking of academics in Elam's thread... anyone know why he was taking the SAT or ACT last weekend? Does he still have work to do?

I took the ACT this past weekend, results typically take 3 weeks.

??? I have been on this site longer than you.

Rude is just rude. Odd and unreasonable are insulting in the English language. I remember when I first came on this site, maybe you don't remember that far back, IE was supposed to be for "mature discussion of all things Notre Dame". Since when are casual insults mature? Just because someone disagrees with you, why does that make his opinions odd or unreasonable? Whatever happened to respecting different opinions? Just because I happen to think that this ploy is a bit kitsch, that is odd? Unreasonable? Sorry man your comments are condescending and rude.

Eff espn. Of course they would ask that question. Acting like this sort of thing hasn't been sent out to recruits before.

Its pretty lame and a waste in theory, but if I got one I'd think its pretty cool (if that makes any sense). Putting all that work and resources on you has to make you feel a little special. Its a different approach compared to the regular stuff you usually see.
