Against the 103rd ranked schedule according to Sagarin. Put that team on our schedule every year. A win against a team that has a winning record, it's a paper tiger victory every year.

I don't care if it's the 9999th ranked schedule, 11-3 tells me they can execute. It's absolutely not the kind of team Brian Kelly wants to open the season against.

That's my question though. What if EG isn't solid next season. What if he's rusty and we drop a game or two early that we might have otherwise won? Or what if Zaire has to play and isn't ready for primetime? Does BK get the benefit of the doubt, and we say "wait till next year"? Or do people start questioning BK?

Edit: For the record, I believe EG will come back, win the job, and play great. I truly believe BK is going to finally let everyone off the leash. However, I'm very interested in the "wait till next year" talk that we're hearing now, that we very well could be using again next season.

In my best Dick Vitale impression........."It's like riding a bike baby! Once you've done it, you never forget".

I don't expect Golson to show any rust. His timing might be off a little early, but between informal throwing sessions and spring practices he'll be back in the groove very very quickly.

I wonder how much time Kelly and Golson will have together from now until August?

Does anyone know the amount of contact allowed while the students are at school and outside of the football season? Are there any prohibitions (ie Can Kelly and Golson or other players and coaches watch film together and practice outside of normal team practices?)

I think as long as they are not school organized activities players can do whatever they want to do during those periods.

I disagree, but oh well.

The point is they are off the schedule and their spot will be filled with a potentially better team.

you are in the minority then. Rice would get pummeled. My alma mater Ball State is 10-2, which is awesome, but they play in the MAC. No way would I say they are an elite team. Rice and Ball State did well with what they had against who they played, nothing more.

Now you're saying Rice is too hard? You're taking the "weaken the schedule" theme to the extreme.

I disagree. One problem with our schedule currently is that Purdue and Navy are regarded by most outside the fan base as equally soft as Georgia State or Tennessee Middle A&M Directional Community College, when in reality they're drastically different teams to play in terms of difficulty of win and overall season fatigue.

By playing better opponents in our "cupcake" slots, we're unnecessarily making things harder on ourselves, and the perception nationally is unchanged.

Yes. 100 percent. And the they should view them as soft. Because they are. Even though Navy wins a few games a year they shouldn't. And Purdue plays us to the wire most of the time lately. On average they are not good teams.

This is one area that kills me every year. We have to start winning games more convincingly. There are gonna be two loss teams in the next few years make the playoff and have a shot at the title. But i can guarantee you that a one or two loss team that beats a sub 500 purdue by 6 and squeaks one by navy in the final minutes will not make the cut.

I really like the tradition of being one of the only three schools NEVER to schedule an FCS opponent, and I think it's something we should hold on to. That said, I'm 100% all in for scheduling FBS cupcakes to start the season.

So... does this mean every team that played Florida this year gets looked at like they beat an FCS school???

No. I'm saying two things: 1) this Rice team is fairly good and 2) is better than the type of team Brian Kelly would want to open the season against.

Rice went 10-3 this year... not exactly a world beater, but definitely a step above your typical FCS tune up.

I know I was making reference to the 3 page fight some of the guys had about him playing or not playing in the bowl game.

That's what I thought. I couldn't help myself.

I also wanted to toss in a "neither – nor."

The trouble is, going forward, we're locked into five ACC games a year. Plus USC, Stanford and Navy. Plus MSU and Purdue most years. Leaving two slots to accommodate:
A: Random national powers that boost our profile, like Oklahoma the last two years
B: The likes of Army/Air Force/BYU who probably aren't going to disappear from our schedule entirely, and shouldn't.
C: This infernal Shamrock Series (which really isn't worth forcing to be an every-year thing)
D: Other occasional quality opponents like Arizona State this year or Northwestern coming up.
E: MAC cupcakes who, really, no one wants to go watch, and God forbid we lose to (remember Tulsa?)

And remember we've got to supply NBC with enough quality inventory to justify the contract. And win ten or more games per year.

Obviously we don't need to play all these teams every year. And sometimes these priorities can be combined (like playing Arizona State in the Shamrock game, though that's biting us next year when they want us there). But Mr. Swarbrick has my sympathy in attempting to build a schedule for the Notre Dame football team.
And really I'd rather we just beat the Purdues and Navy's of the world convincingly than tell him to work more MACtion into the annual schedule.

Open ?
Is this what next year is gonna be like?
I would like to see us schedule a every other year deal with the BIG12 or the SEC. Make it the Shamrock series game.

Anyone that is a die hard fan knows we can lose any game on our schedule as well as win.
Why not take a shot at beating Texas Tech rather than Rice. Losing will draw my tears either way but no matter how many games Rice wins dropping one to them looks bad.

Our main goal of every year is to win titles. Secondary goal would be to bring in top notch recruits to win titles in the years to come. Generally if we were to drop a game it would take us out of the title picture. And If the game is Rice how does that look to a kid from texas that is thinking about coming here?
Son; "Dad i'm thinking of going to Notre dame to play football"
Dad; "I don't know son, didn't they lose to the sixth best team in Texas this year?"
I just don't see the upside to playing a school like Tulsa or Rice. Have a bad day and virtually screw the whole year. Play great and what, Ya beat Rice.
