What if they don't? I don't think that's a good situation either. Would we want to take a commitment from a kid that clearly stated that he would go to Texas if they offered? What if Texas had an extra spot in the 11th hour and offered him at the last minute? Would he bail on us on NSD?

It's a tough situation, imo.

This would be my main concern. That said, with recent talk of ND possibly "oversigning", I would be more comfortable with Hill as #86 rather than #85 if that makes any sense.

Posted 26 mins. ago from Horns247, “If I got the offer from there, it would probably make me make my decision a lot sooner,” Hill said. “If they offered, they would be my favorite, there’s no doubt about it. As of right now Notre Dame is my top school, but if Texas offers me that all changes.” This is Kolin Hill speaking about what an offer from Texas would do to his recruitment. Also calls them "America's Team". He's actually visiting for a practice today and coming back for the game on Thursday. This seems to be a done deal.

He also told rivals that if he was offered from Texas today a commitment on the spot is "definitely" a possibility.

No offense, but that sounds pretty d*ckish on his part. ND decided to take a chance and buy into this 2-star player, and he was "speechless" when he received his offer. Then once Texas comes sniffing around, he just brushes ND off like it's nothing? That's pretty cold right there.

Huh? He lives in Texas- chances are UT is his dream school.

We were the first of the lurking Tier 1 programs to offer after our first choices didn't pan out. His original reaction was that he was blown away by such a prestigious offer and knew that it would open doors.

ND didn't do him any favors, he didn't BS ND, and he doesn't owe ND anything.

Texas is probably his favourite team growing up. Let's say Texas offered you and Notre Dame came knocking later on. What would you do? At least he's honest about it. Besides, he never committed to us. He's free to go where he please...

I agree. I'm also with Piomino above, that we should probably consider him as a kid that we would take if he was available on NSD, but certainly not make number decisions based off of his verbal (if he ever gave one).

You never know guys. Texas could offer...he commits to them...but still takes a visit to South Bend...ends up falling in love and commits to ND. You just never know.

Possible, but I bet he shuts it down if Texas offers.

I'm most worried about the scenario outlined above... no offer from Texas, visits ND, commits, and we lose him to an 11th hour offer right before NSD.

Def could happen. Just like Oka something who committed to Oklahoma after they offered late.

Okotcha. Flipped from Wisc to ND to Oklahoma. And then left Oklahoma as a RS frosh after a "clash of personalities" with the Oklahoma coaches. He's now a UTSA Roadrunner.

Moral of the story? When someone offers you at truly the 11th hour (not just "late" after getting your senior highlights, etc.), it says everything you need to know about where you were on their board. Be very careful.

Yep I knew the whole story, just couldn't remember his name.

Completely agree about the 11th comment.

This.
He doesn't owe us anything. He hasn't even visited. And we didn't "take a chance" on him in any meaningful sense. We offered him after other guys higher on our board didn't pan out. If he's got schools higher on his board than us, that's fine. At least he's up front about it. I'd be much more concerned about the "talk ND up but bail on Signing Day" scenario.
We should stay on him, make our case, try to get him to visit. But if he chooses Texas, that's fine. We should move on.

This tells me he's probably not real high on their list at the moment.

Which is kind of surprising because their list is pretty weak this year, and I haven't heard any UT buzz surrounding higher-ranked recruits. If Mack Brown drags it out another year, the Longhorns could be a major "fixer upper" for the next guy.

So, if UT offers, he gone. Yet, he's not good enough for UT? Let's move on.

UT has their own needs which may not be the same as ours. They might be in good shape with other, better prospects. I think this is an immature way of looking at the situation.

OV locked in for Dec 13-14. He is coming up with his father and both are really excited to see Notre Dame.

He thinks Texas is about to offer but that offer will not end his recruitment. He likes Texas, the coaches, facilities, etc. But he said he has never seen Notre Dame so he can't compare the two.

Kelly and Diaco are going for an in-home before his OV.

Doesn't this pretty much go against everything he's implied about a Texas offer?

Yes. You choose if you want to believe the earlier statements or the one he just gave in which he said he really wants to see Notre Dame and find the best fit for himself

I do believe that he does want to give ND a fair shot and visit.

I also believe that if Texas offers that is where he signs.

Is he a take then? Kids like this (see: Bennett Okotcha) have a substantial risk of decommitting late when their dream school offers, which leaves us holding the bag.
