'12 NC DE Romeo Okwara (Notre Dame Signed LOI)

Remember, Romeo is three days younger than Jaylon Smith, who was recruited a year after him! Can you imagine him with an extra year? He isn't even an 18 and a half year old sophomore! I think it is arguable that he has demonstrated that he can do everything (except physically dominate a center and guard from nose tackle) that is required to play about five or six positions on defense. I counted that he played five on Saturday nose, de, dog, cat, and ilb.

He was easily my favorite recruit from his class. I hope to see much more of him this year. So versatile.

Unfortunately, no. That's going to grind my gears for years to come.

Yes, totally. Every time I see him on the field I think how amazing it is that this kid is an 18 year old sophomore -- which means he will graduate as a 20 year old senior, which means he won't reach full physical maturity during his career at ND. Frustrating.

yep and sad thing is by the time hes exhausted his eligibility he probably wont be yet physically mature enough for the NFL.

Not sure about that. Lots of kids go to the NFL at 20 ... just not many have been in college for four years by then.

from what I saw everytime he was on he did a twist with the DE beside him and rushed outside.

We have been killed on 3rd and long with mobile QB's. They have nothing downfield so they tuck it and run it right down the middle. Usually because our pass rush got out of its lanes or nix was just a bit to slow to track them down. I believe putting romeo in was an answer to this. This first time we tried against OU he rushed to far upfield and Bell tucked it and got a big 1st down. I noticed against ASU they basically stood up and either dropped or just read the QB and made sure that didn't happen (or the stunt to the outside). They made sure there was no running lane up the middle and the boys on the outside could pin their ears back.

And it is. I play OLB and our biggest game of the year is this Sunday. So much fun.

We need a thread for this. In fact, we need a NBC Strong and True on this. A website with rosters, bios, stats, weekly game previews, post-game write-ups, etc. Weekly webcasts of games complete with hot female sideline reporters. PM me Jimmy. Let's start working on a marketing plan for your senior season.

What's funny is that there is everything you mentioned. Stats are recorded ad posted online, and there's a weekly preview and post game write up in the ND paper the observer.

Of course there is. What's the link?

I know most of you wish he could have redshirt last year, and too some degree I do too. I do think though, his seeing the field early is really going to benefit the team for the next two years. He looks like a future star for us and he will not be labeled "raw" next year as he has gotten a little seasoning under his belt. Very excited about his future here!

He's going to be a very good ballplayer for us. Will make losing Shembo feel not so bad.

Exactly. This kid went in against the best team we played, showed freakish speed for his size, and was stronger than the competition. That says something against the Stanford running game. This kid had as good a game as any player against the Cardinal.

Our linebackers next year, if Moore can iron out coverage, Smith - Grace - Moore - Okwara, could well be lights out!

And Williams! Ishaq played very well last night considering he was playing on one leg.

He will be at 275 pounds next year, probably. I think he is listed as a OLB but he will play with the hand on the ground probably full time. Enough with Ishaq, next year is time to see Okwara.

Disagree Ishaq plagued very well before the injury this year.

What do you mean when you say very well? Because he only has three solo tackles in nine games and one sack, which came in a stunt, not beating his man one on one. He looks better than his sophomore year (not very difficult) but even with that, is clearly insufficient.

Not sure how you can say which one is better at this point...

What i wanted to say is that if they really will fight for the starting spot at the CAT position, i would like to see more playing time for Okwara because he is younger, looks already better and we do not see him as much as Ishaq, who in three years he barely did nothing. Anyway, i think Romeo is more suited to play as a DE.

Yeah, it'd be interesting to put Romeo at DE in a 4-3 system at about 260-270 lbs.

Don't forget he is younger than Jaylon Smith, for example. I think he is carrying 260 or little more pounds right now and looks like he can add more bulk. He is a beast!!

I def wouldn't say he is better than ishaq at this point. They both need to work on their pass rushing skills a bunch but are better than shembo in space already.

Romeo doesn't hug and then throw to the ground. He, like Kendall Moore tries to run through you. This makes me happy.

A) Jaylon Smith is three days older than Romeo Okwara.

B) Romeo put Cardinal runners on their asses last night. One of the few players who did, and he did it consistently. So did Ishaq, Danny Fox and Jaylon Smith (a bit.)

C) Ishaq has the skill set for DE. Romeo is a linebacker.

D) Ishaq has played solidly all season, except when injured.

E) Last night technique wise, Romeo and Ishaq were the best two, followed by Day, Smith, Jones, Fox, and Kona.

F) Anybody who wants to see Ishaq play lb over de, and anyone who wants to see Romeo play de over lb, is either rusty on the job descriptions of each position, or sees football in very basic terms.

G) Romeo is a long 6'4" and about 260? That is just what the coaches would like to see at CAT. With the freakish speed he has for that size, too.

H) Some guys play like linebackers; some guys play like defensive ends. Ishaq plays like a defensive end.

I) The difference between OLB and DE is being blurred on this defense.

I will take a conversation on any of these points but I think they are pretty substantiated. Just like last night when Romeo ran down two offensive skill guys from Stanford, like they were standing still. Not only did he close a gap, but they could not elude him. And they took a "hit", too!
