I'll pretty much take any bowl game against another AQ team at this point.

The Independence Bowl in Shreveport assumes that only 9 SEC teams will be bowl eligible (out of 14). That's definitely possible, but not necessarily in the bag.

Division II wins don't count do they? SEC should have a hard time finding 9 teams to go 6-3 in their non-FCS schedule.

This is from the NCAA site, updated Oct 17, 2013:

"Currently, there are 35 other bowl games that contractually tied to the FBS conferences. To become bowl eligible a team must have a winning record, which may include one win against a FCS opponent, or win their conference and the team must not be on postseason probation. The NCAA allows one victory per season over a FCS team to count toward an FBS team's bowl eligibility, so long as the FCS team has supplied financial aid for football averaging out to at least at 90 percent of the 63 scholarships allowed over "a rolling two-year period" that can include the current season."

I dont want to sound like a jerk but IMO we lose the bowl this season is a failure. We win and it was a decent yet disappointing year. We win out and it was a good year for the hand we were dealt.

ND needs to win at least one of the inal two first... If they drop the final three in the season the bowl game outcome won't matter that much either way in some regards...

true statement but the offseason feels so much better when we get the bowl win. The 09 offseason felt great even though we had a ****** year the year before and were in for another shittier year. Realistically speaking we only have a shot at getting BYU and the bowl. Unless Stanford turns to garbage and we turn into Supermen in the next few weeks Stanford is gonna be UGLY.

If Tommy protects the ball and the defense gets healthy ND can beat Stanford also...

I don't think so this year...Our LB's are terrible and we've shown we can't get pressure on QB's.

Could it happen? Sure. Hell, Utah beat them (one could argue Utah could beat us)...but I'm taking Stanford with my money.

You never know, maybe this loss will allow the team to play looser and they'll fly around and make plays. One can only hope so at least

Going Bowling?

Sounds like there's a real chance ND plays the loser of tonight's ultimate MAC matchup: NIU vs BSU. Penn State will probably win one more game and take this bid though.

A more likely bowl spot for ND is the Poinsettia Bowl, since Army most likely won't be eligible for their spot. Usually pairs them with the #2 MWC team. Utah State, Colorado State, Boise State, Wyoming, and San Diego State are in line for that #2 spot...all behind Fresno State.

you gotta think ND has to take the best bowl possible for recruiting, looking at the guys ND has left on its board you gotta think a bowl game in CA would be most beneficial.

Agreed. I honestly just hope they win. A loss to any of those teams listed would be an epic failure. I'm assuming ND finishes the regular season 1-1 and then takes one of these low level bowl games...a game they MUST win to keep momentum. Best case scenario for me personally is that ND beats BYU, hangs tough with Stanford, and blows out the bowl opponent. 9-4 with a bowl win isn't amazing, but with wins against MSU, ASU, USC, and hopefully one of BYU/Stanford...I'll take it.

So does that mean a 7-5 SEC team with three wins over FCS schools is not bowl eligible? Or do they back out two of the FCS wins to make a 5-5 record eligible?

In that case, only a 6-6 squad with 2 or 3 FCS wins would fall out of consideration (5-6 or 4-6 after backing out the ineligible FCS wins).

I'm intrigued by the Phil Steele prediction that has us going to the Independence Bowl/Advocare v100. We'd be replacing the SEC #10 school and playing the ACC #7. It's on December 31st which is a pretty respectable date (I'd hate playing a game too early-anything before the 30th seems trashy).

For there to be only 9 bowl-eligible SEC teams, we essentially need:

Tennessee: to lose to Vandy
Florida: to lose to FSU and South Carolina
Miss State: to lose to Bama and Ole Miss

I just really want to avoid playing a non-AQ in a bowl game, its a complete lose-lose.

Is it just me or is there a crazy gap between the BSC bowls and everything else? This team goes from an outside shot at a BSC game to the chef boyardee bowl against Utah state, with one additional loss?

Conferences contribute to the steep drop off. Most schools don't go from BCS to turd bowl. There's the Peach, Citrus, Cotton, and Gator Bowls, which all have good teams.

Conference tie ins are an unnessisary archaic tradition. Are those bowls obligated to fill with tie in conference teams, or is it like the rose bowl where they try to stick with tradition but can choose a better at large if they want?

What the projection look like after this weekend?

With WVU and TCU now ineligible, the Pinstripe looks like a real possibility, correct?

Ya, its the #8 Big 12 vs. #4 AAC and they Big-12 will only have 7 bowl-eligible teams. I could see a backroom deal where its ND vs. Louisville even though they'll finish 2nd in the AAC standings.

A Louisville team with Teddy Bridgewater is good but I would feel comfortable with this game if a healthy Irish team is taking the field

If they lose their last three this year, they really should not even consider going to a bowl.

Going from 7-2 to 7-5 pretty much would be the worst possible outcome. Really no way around it.

REALLY need to win this weekend, particularly because it is Senior Day. But 8 wins is a lot more satisfactory.

Heart of Dallas bowl wouldn't be a bad option since the big ten won't have enough teams bowl eligible
