Btw Ku I would think Luatua is higher on the board. Rivals staff has said the staff absolutely loves Tyler. It's been questioned if he loves to play football.

The guys don't say in TV, but they do say that they expect a commitment from Luatua on his USC visit, and they are trying to get Schultz to visit sometime after the season. Make of that what you will.

Today Wiltfong said that we're recruiting Luatua as a Jumbo athlete. I bet they start him at TE and move him if necessary.

Nothing against Schultz but with Luatua and Weishar coming. Then Heuerman and Smythe last where is the room? Unless you wanna move Lutua to CAT then not bring back Welch. They know what there doing.

I doubt Welch is coming back since he hasn't been able to pass the wildly inconsistent Koyack yet.

Weishar could be a jumbo WR, Luatua a ROLB, Blankenship a DE, etc.

We've got lots of talented "Big Skill" interested in jumping on board, so it probably makes sense to take a bunch and sort out the positions later.

Watch the film and I just see Smythe and Schultz as the same player. I just hope we don't turn away a big body up front to bring in 3 TE this class. Adam Gorney did say if Schultz doesn't go to Stanford he believes Notre Dame would steal him.

Who would we turn away on the DL? We're fine at DE, and they seem to be planning for at least 2 DTs.

But I agree that it would be odd to take 3 TEs in this class. Assuming Luatua's Irish, we'll have 6 on the roster heading into 2014, though we haven't used 12 personnel enough this year to really justify carrying that many, and I doubt that's the kind of offense Kelly wants to run.

It's starting to seem that the only real threat to steal four-star tight end Dalton Schultz away from Stanford is Notre Dame. Schutz has visited each school in his final five except Notre Dame. The fact that Stanford has led his recruitment wire-to-wire while he toured other campuses says that it will be hard to knock the Cardinal from that perch. Notre Dame, on the other hand, represents the unknown. A great official visit to South Bend is the only thing that might shake up his recruitment. - See more at: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1567292#sthash.jhab1iEL.dpu

Is Schultz even a take if Luata jumps on board as expected? Can't see there being 3 TEs in the 2014 class with all the current TEs coming back next year.

Not sure it would come down to a "take" situation. With that many TEs on board, seems very unlikely he would commit.

Welch? I doubt it.

True thats a possibility. I would think that even with him not coming back that taking 3 TES this class is still not that great of an idea. There's only 5 on the roster right now, so you'd be at 7 or 8 for next year depending on Welch if you took 3 in this class.

EDIT - Just read your post above from 8/20 Buster LOL

If we can get Schultz I say take him. We might not get a top TE in next years class so let's do it.

This would be the corp in 2014, assuming Welch is brought back (I think he's going to have a killer season), and Smythe and Heuerman redshirt. And, of course, Schultz committed along with Luatua. It seems highly unreasonable for one position, but at the same time...

You know the old saying... #2 TE's are loaded w potential.

Yeah, if I were Schultz, I'd be worried about playing Ben Koyack to Luatua's Niklas. Hopefully the staff is able to convince him that we have a plan for using all these TEs.

Don't sleep on Weishar. I think he is going to be really, really good.

And Luatua could end up on the defensive side of the ball. Love for him to work out w the linebackers but not at DOG behind the manchild.

Updated. Small bumps for Luatua and Weishar. Schultz overtook Luatua for #1.

Do want, all three.

I think Notre Dame should basically bring in all of the big talented bodies they can for power spread offense. It seems like a much more sustainable model, as I've mentioned before.

also w/ the majority of them being freshman or redshirt freshman, bring them in...you never know what happens w/ injuries, not panning out or a transfer...

Just curious on why you think Luatua would start over Schultz? There is a log jam at TE.

He will visit after the season. the staff will have to hit a home run to steal him from Stanford

He and his mother will be on campus Dec 6-7. 247 believes Stanford still leads but he is not a lock there. The staff has been in constant communication with him all year.

Was really hoping we'd get a visit later in the cycle when we had a better understanding of numbers... ideally in January right before NSD. IMO, he is the best TE prospect in this class. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Weishar, Luatua, and Schultz might be the top 3 prospects on ND's board. I know they're all higher than Bunting, Gesicki, Helm, Blazevich, etc.

It would be awesome if we could load up at every position like we do at TE every cycle. High interest/commits from top 10 prospects every single cycle that we want one. It's crazy. Sad that TE is arguably one of the least important positions on the football field.

disagree...i think with the emphasis that we place on our TE's blocking on the perimeter it is very important for us to have solid production at the TE position. Niklas and Koyack have also had some big catches for us this year in key situations.
