Current prediction: Florida State Seminoles vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Next up for Florida State's spot (ACC): Clemson, Miami

Next up for Notre Dame's spot (at-large): Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

The ACC champion goes to the Orange if its not playing in the BCS title game, so we put Florida State in that position for now. If the Seminoles end up in Pasadena, however, the most likely scenario is for Clemson to be picked by the Orange as a replacement. Miami is also alive, as the Hurricanes are not only the favorite to win the Coastal Division and have a chance to win the ACC title on the field in December, but there's also a chance UM could be picked if it finishes with just a pair of losses to FSU, and Clemson takes a second loss. Keep in mind, this bowl game is in Miami.

After the top two teams are assigned to the BCS title game, and the bowls that are contracted to have the champions from those conferences have made their replacement picks, the first at-large selection goes to the Orange Bowl. And even though most fans hate to hear this, Notre Dame is relatively certain to be the first pick if the Irish are eligible (top 14 in the final BCS Standings). More than likely, ND will have to win out, including a victory at Stanford, to get that high.

Assuming that doesn't happen, the Orange will probably turn to the Big Ten. If Wisconsin finishes 10-2 on a seven-game winning streak, the Badgers are an attractive option. If Wisconsin stumbles, Michigan State could be next in line if the Spartans don't lose again until the Big Ten championship game. Of course, if MSU were to win the Big Ten title and hand Ohio State its first loss of the season, that might send the Buckeyes to the front of this Big Ten line. And if none of those things happens, the Orange could go west and take Oklahoma or Oklahoma State if either team finishes 10-2 but is not the Big 12 champ.

I hope we win out and finish 10-2 (probability under 25%, I think). I pray, however, we do NOT sneak into a BCS bowl game. This is because one bowl game ***-raping is horrendous but bowl game *** rapes in successive years would be crushing. Sneaking into a BCS bowl game this year through the back door will have a cruelly ironic meaning after the game given the likely teams we'd have to play. Any possible match up in a BCS bowl game has us badly over-matched.

We have a history of sneaking into BCS bowl games with less-than-competitive teams in the not-too-distant past. We got slaughtered in both of them.

We have not had one dominant win over a good team all year. Yes, we snuck by MSU and ASU but they were not dominant wins (which I define as wins by at least 14 points). On the other hand we have escaped with our lives against weak teams (Purdue and Navy come to mind).

ND doesn't need the BCS cash and we'll be far better off playing a truly competitive game in a non-BCS bowl.

I'm afraid BYU or Stanford, or both of them, are going to moot any chance of our getting into a BCS bowl. Even if we beat both of them, however, I don't think we belong no matter what our fan appeal is,

Wanting to get into a BCS bowl game is a case of "be careful what you wish for" in my honest opinion.

I love ND football and want what's best for the school, the football program and its future. Getting slaughtered in a BCS Bowl game this year doesn't do ND football any good whatsoever. I think it's a big negative for recruiting when compared to a win in a lesser bowl. Yes, miracles happen and we might win a BCS bowl game. Would you put your money on that happening? Not me.

I invite any rational arguments proving me wrong about this. Thank you for anyone who responds with substance and not invective.

Since this thread is going nowhere and these two posts reminded me of.......

Sea otter, dolphin, and penguin behavior: Your favorite animals are jerks.

Delivered in the scientific deadpan required of such papers, the Aquatic Mammals report attributes the incidents to three male sea otters “observed harassing, dragging, guarding, and copulating with harbor seals,” persisting for up to seven days after the otters killed the objects of their misguided advances. The ordeal must have been horrific for the seals. The victims that were necropsied by veterinarians had lesions around the nose, eyes, flippers, and genitals, including perforations in the vaginal and rectal tracts. A painful and confusing end for the poor pups.

The Michigan gameday thread during the Penn State game is the thread to beat. Lax was totally in Gibbon's head.

"Miss it you rapist!"

FYI - that was 'upset alert' thread.

Just clearing that up for nominations.
