Don't you think it's possible EE's have a special provision that would protect them from this? Maybe it's as simple as you've stated, maybe there's a rule. That's what all those decimals are for in the rule book.

Wouldn't JUCO's be allowed to play then? Nope they can't. I can keep doing this all day. Football is a Fall sport and you have to be enrolled and eligible for the fall semester to play in the bowl games.

ND may have suspended him for the semester, but the intent was obviously to suspend him for the football season. If you think he will be allowed to play by ND, even if the NCAA rules allow it, you are sorely mistaken. It would completely defeat the purpose of the disciplinary action.

My assumption is that, had he been caught for cheating at the end of the Fall semester, he would have been suspended in the Spring (possibly keeping him from the bowl game in January). Are you suggesting he would have been suspended a year? Or that he would have remained in the spring, and then suspended in the fall?

Really? I mean, there are a host of good reasons to not let him play, but it shouldn't be that he didn't "serve his time" and that he should be punished further, if that's what is being suggested. I'm thinking about college basketball players punished for a variety of reasons and held out for the first half of the season only to return mid-way through the conference schedule... maybe wrong analogy.

That's all I was trying to understand.

I couldn't care less how ND would handle it, that was never my point. My question was whether being enrolled in spring classes would make him eligible by NCAA rules.

I think kuehnja was making the point that the punishment wasn't "football related" - so they didn't consult the rules of bowl eligibility in suspending him for the fall semester. That that happens to be a result of his suspension doesn't change the point that academics are academics. He just happens to also play football... Sorry if that's not the point, keuhnja.

I wasn't stirring anything. People were saying 'no way' without and evidence other than 'common sense' so I pointed to the reasons of why I was unsure how the NCAA would rule on the matter.

People need to chill out. It's ok to have a discussion.
