Seems to me that this situation is eerily familiar to the one with Anzalone. Committed to one school, but seems pretty clear he's heart is somewhere else. I think its only a matter of time before Diaco and gang gets him to flip to the good side

Someone asked Sampson if he thinks we flip Redfield sometime later last week he said no. Today he thinks we do. So something must be going on. I am not getting my hopes all the way up yet but how can you not?

Interviewed #USC commit Max Redfield tonight. He did confirm he committed too early. Top picks are USC, Notre Dame, Oregon and LSU.

If you watch the video on Rivals he kinda trips up his words when asked if he decommitted.

He starts to say yes and then stops himself but goes on to say something like he committed too soon.

Really well spoken kid by the way.

The exact words are

Q: You said you thought you committed a little bit too early. Would you ever decommit? Officially decommit.

A: Ah. I think I mmmm [pause] I would consider decommitting just to open the recruiting process back up.

There hasn't been a talent like Max in forever in the secondary. Kelly turned Motta into a thorpe DB and Harrison Smith into a 1st rounder. With Max sky would be the limit

Yeah, you would have to go back to David Bruton to find his body type and athletic ability. Max is more highly decorated coming out of high school but Bruton played some good football at the end of his career. He was a killer gunner too on kick coverage. I'm thinking this is the best comparison and I like Max at free safety like Bruton played where his athletic ability can shine.

Max got Player of the week for having 10 rec 182 yds and one TD last Friday in a win. He also had 6 tackles. I personally think he should be at safety. I am really pumped that he could be in the blue and gold. I didn't think we had a chance. This week Mission Viejo plays undefeated El Toro in the last game of the regular season. The QB for El Toro broke Matt Barkley's passing record. I will try and update on Friday.

I see a badass FS, ball hawkin all over the place. Harrison smith and motta were decent prospects but this would be the best safety prospect of the rivals era. This kid has always been extremely high on my wish list. If we can keep Anzalone, with smith, and then close with AQM, and redfield it would set our defense up for 4 seasons of dominance.

If he were to decommit, and eventually choose the Irish, would it be immediately or would he do a sort of "open back up the recruiting" style thing for a while?

I think the Irish would lead if that were to happen but he still want to take visits. If he does recommit he'll most likely go to Oregon in an official. Has to decommit first tho otherwise chip won't let him visit. He has also stated that he'll visit Washington and lsu. So I think we are in a good spot I don't think he would be decommiting to just hop in the fold immediately

I agree a 100% on Max that he is without question a FS. Same here he was one my wants early on as well. He's the best athlete amongst the S's in this class.

You correct from a ranking standpoint and Motta while good was never anywhere near the class of Max but even though he didn't have the ranking as high as Max's I wanted Harrison Smith more than any other S that year. He was very, very fast an elite athlete and thought he got a raw deal and his speed questioned because he was a white DB.

Yes, he'd be the best safety prospect we've signed in awhile... but let's not kid ourselves, Harrison Smith was an utter beast and based on draft position the #2 safety in the whole country. Redfield is rated somewhere around the #4 safety prospect right now. So let's not over-exaggerate the uniqueness here.

I wasn't comparing them as players right now, I was comparing them when they came out as prospects(high school seniors).

harrison was awesome no doubt that, but redfield would be a lot more highly touted coming in the harrison was. whether that translates into greatness would remain to be seen.

I think there is a strong possibility he would do quite well at ND over the course of time. Coach Elliott is proving to be quite a teacher of young DB's. There isn't a stud recruit on the board right now that would be guaranteed a starting spot on next years team other than the position currently occupied by Zeke. Russell, Jackson and Farley will all start next year (if healthy) no matter who comes in as part of this class. Coach Elliott is blowing away expectations (mine anyway) and the future is very bright.

This is a very good point, but there is something to be said for finished products v. works-in-progress. He seems more ready-to-go to me. If Redfield could give us 2 good years and 2 great years, that woud be reason to compare him with Smith's 1 decent, 1 bad, 1 good, and 1 great year. We have had some luck under Kelly getting good play out of freshman (he plays to their strengths).

Also, Smith was one of those interesting prospects that is more of a tier 1 prototype than a game-changer. He knew what he was doing and had the size and speed to play in the pros for a long time. However, there are players who have higher impacts in college who aren't necessarily better pro-prospects, either because they are a little too small or the game is just too complicated for their skill set. Redfield seems like he is going to be a pretty big-time college safety, regardless of where he projects as a Pro.

We also can't forget Collinsworth who, if we all remember, was starting in spring before he got hurt. Dubbed the werewolf by Diaco too.

I think Coach Crooks gets some props for the developement of our corners too.
