Just my opinion, but he has no business being an NFL RB.

He may get signed as an undrafted, but I wouldn't expect him to make it for more than a year.

he will probably got a shot for potential and his genetics but I can't see him sticking anywhere beyond a practice squad for maybe a season.

Exactly. In the pros you need a RB who can get you a few yards. CAM might have a future there but GAIII does not. There are only two or three RBs in the NFL who can break it, and they do it once or twice a season if that many.
The big plays come from the QB, several a game. RBs are used to move the chains and to occupy the safeties and corners not take over games.

if GA3 is afraid of contact now playing against teenagers then what is he gonna be like when he gets to the NFL..

I may be in the minority on this, but I could really care less about his prospects to play in the NFL. I care about what he can do for Notre Dame. Would be great to see him succeed on the next level, but I won't lose any sleep if he doesn't.

I might disagree with this. He doesn't have the break-away speed, but he has more than enough speed to make a difference on the outside. He did so against USC. He made one cut, got outside, and hit a huge gain along the sidelines (not to mention he showed the stiff arm he always uses for extra yardage).

And it's not just USC. Cam has had quite a few productive runs around the end. He's got the necessary vision, acceleration and cutting ability to be a threat on the outside... he just doesn't have the GAIII speed that turns a 25-yard gainer into a homerun.

Cam is almost exactly like Theo in my opinion. Theo was a bit more shifty, but he didn't have that high top-end speed either.

This is just a bunch of words that mean to say: I don't think you're giving Cam enough credit on his ability to run outside lol.

I agree with this. Cam has been put in a lot of situations when the defense knows we're going to run the ball (Late in the game, or 2nd half USC). He still produces despite this. GAIII and Carlisle wouldn't have Cam's yards in the same situation. You need that back that will hit the hole and gain a few more yards after contact. Currently GAIII and Carlisle pretty much go down after initial contact, and GAIII shouldn't be given his size. Carlisle should be better utilized on the edge, need to get him into space to make him work. Folston could be the guy in the future, I'd like to see him as #2 with Cam as #1. Put GAIII back to #3 as a home run possibility, Carlisle line up in the slot, or put him in for that Split back formation we showed last week.

Maybe as a kick returner/situational RB (it would help if he figured out how to catch). But, yeah.

Break away speed for an RB is as overrated as 40 times. Rarely do you see a back get to the outside and take one the distance.

IMO.....GAIII is not a RB. He has elite speed and the staff is trying to get him to run like a RB. At this stage you either know how (vision, hitting the hole, when to cut, etc.) to run the ball or you don't. That's why GAIII has been so inconsistent. Most of GAIII's nice runs have come in open space (jet sweep, KO returns) where he doesn't have to move thru traffic. I personally think with his size and speed he is better off to play WR or slot. I just don't know if he has the hands to do it.

Isn't this GB's thread? lol

Yeah, if GAIII had the hands I would move him to WR or in the Slot. Since he doesn't have the hands...maybe Safety or Corner? He has problems changing direction though, so maybe not Corner. It would be amusing that he and his brother both switch Offense/Defense. I'd leave him on Special Teams as well for returns.

Of course, all of this won't matter when Bo pulls the plug for the Irish. He will be the featured back by game six next season. He has all the strengths of the backs already there.

I'll hold out on making assessments about GAIII's future NFL career when all is said and done, and he's laid down the Blue & Gold uniform for good. In the meantime, I'll trust the coaches and hope that he continues to improve on the positives he has demonstrated so far and negate the negatives.

Oh, and GB - heal up, man.

Love that attitude from him. I really, really hope he stays and tears it up with Folston next year.

Doesn't mean he is talking about coming back to ND tho. Hopefully he stays here.

If he leaves I fully blame jimmymac… who, instead of planning his nudity romp route, should be lavishing this kid with so much positive mojo and love that he can’t possibly think of going elsewhere…

Get on it Jimmy.

It's sad that it's come to point that when a highly touted recruit doesn't get regular PT as a Freshman, we assume they want to leave school.

I know many have done so and that a couple left before even getting started. We need all this change immediately.

I think this is more easy than we think.

In my opinion, he will stay at least one more year and he will see how things are going. If he plays in a regular basis he will stay. If he does not play, he will leave.

The problem is, next year the RB position is the same. Will he play with Folston, Cam, GAII and Carlisle still on the team?

If he gets healthy, he should have every opportunity to pass GAIII and Carlisle as a "regular." And if he's halfway as good as we all hope, that should be enough to trump GAIII and Carlisle's inconsistencies.

I thought he left a month ago with Longo in a package deal?

Nope, nobody wanted Longo. They said his teams are historically too slow and weak. Especially in the fourth quarter.

I think it would be better if Carlisle moves to the slot next season. It'll help with the logjam at RB (minimal, but enough), and it gives us an electric, "twitch" player at WR.

I know Carlisle hasn't shown it on the game field (and has had a few drops), but it's all BK could talk about when people would ask about Carlisle from spring practice to fall camp.

And if there happens to be an injury situation at RB next season, Carlisle and/or Mahone could switch back to RB ala Theo during the final stretch of 2011-12 season.

One less RB in the rotation can only mean more carries for Bryant.

That's my main issue with Carlisle; he's been given several opportunities to get involved as a pass-catcher, and hasn't done anything with them. That's not to say he won't come around. Theo had a rough intro to the slot position in 2011 before he turned it on late against Michigan. However, the offense can't afford to plug Carlisle into the slot and *hope* it works out. The WR position is far too crowded/talented to give their reps away to a guy who hasn't shown the ability to be effective as a pass-catcher.

Also, in reality only the numbers game is similar to SC's past situations... at times they had five-six elite backs all competing... I can't say we have that at ND right now with a straight face.

While I agree with what your saying, we have to remember that its a lot easier to talk a five star player into sticking around while he's not playing when the sun is shining, there are beautiful woman around, and he doesn't have to go to class.

With that being said, Carroll had an incredible amount of transfers and wash outs at WR/RB. But when you bring in 4 WRs and 2 RBs each year that are 5:s: players it doesn't really matter.

In that vein, if we had Hood still on board would anyone care about Bryant? What about Hood + Starks?
