so.....How about that Heistand hire, eh?

Awesome recruiter, but I don't like the way the run blocking has taken a step back this year. Pass blocking has been superb, just disappointed we haven't really established a running game. I still like Heistand more than Warriner, but I kind of feel like Warriner got the run game moving again for us. Maybe last year was a carry over from that, maybe it's all coincidence. I do realize that teams have been stacking the box quite a bit this year on us.

Having Warriner gone was one of the greatest things to happen to ND. Harry is a teacher and has a connection with his linemen. He doesn't just scream and yell and try to intimidate. The players have responded to Harry and that is clear to me on the field. I always felt like Ed was constantly looking around for the next best thing and his departure for OSU was not a shock.

I still like Heistand more, but it still looks like the running game is regressing a bit since Warriner left. OSU hasn't done too shabby with Warriner either, their OL has improved. Great pass blocking this year for us, very few sacks given up, and great recruiting...just wish our run game was further along.

I think Tommy not being a running threat at all has hurt our running game. I think next year we will see a better balanced attack. I do think we run the ball better when we have that guy motion and then we give to the back in the backfield. It keeps teams honest. I remember the steady diet of that against BYU late last year and how much it worked, but like all plays that work, Kelly abandons too quickly.

9 minutes. 9 minutes it took.

We're 96th in rushing yards this season. When Warriner came in we steadily were getting better at running the ball each year it looked like. Last year was the most rushing yards we've had in several years, and I realize Warriner was gone for that, but I wonder if it was as a result of a building effort. We've regressed this season, and we really could have used a stronger running game to take away the pressure from Tommy.

Tommy is part of the reason why there's pressure on the running game. The other part I would add in is the inexperience at the RB position. Last year we had Riddick and Wood to shoulder the load.

Teams can stack the box against Tommy which is why it is important for him to establish some type of an aerial attack early in a game.

That was the result of a mobile QB and two NFL-caliber RBs. Now we have a statue under center and bunch of inexperienced RBs. Doesn't make much sense to consider the OL coach as the primary factor in any given year's rushing performance.

If you adjust for the quality of the run defenses we've faced, ND is 17th nationally this season. Hiestand has given us no reason to doubt him since he arrived on campus.

This.
Teams have been challenging Tommy to throw the football all year long. I don't care how good your OL is, when good teams constantly stack the box you won't be able to run at will. The lack of balance in this offense has been our undoing. We had some success running the ball in the first half against SC because Tommy was hitting targets. When andrew came in, they basically stop doing any coverage because he could not make a throw...

Right, teams are basically forcing us to throw by playing a lot of man coverage and stacking the box because they don't think Tommy can beat them. That's not Hiestand's fault.

I think this is a key point, and it really does tie to Tommy's immobility and inconsistency. Teams don't routinely stack the box on Johnny Football. (Don't go wild; Tommy is our best option, and sometimes looks very good. But if he isn't a certain level of consistency, teams can press with blitzes and load up 9 or 10, and it's just hard to run.) I really think the O Line will be a strength on this team starting next year; with Golson back and hopefully better himself, plus increased experience and depth and deeper RBs, I think we see the running game take off. I think Heistand has done a good job.

If things don't improve, we can always fire Heistand after next season, along with Longo.

Who do you want to try and beat you, turnover Tommy or the running game? I'd stack the box every game and let Rees throw 40 times. You would at least get one turnover. And that is the reason the running numbers aren't that great.

The way Stanley has played this year, makes really want to see him play on the left side next year.

Personally, I say keep him at RT. Especially, in the worst case scenario of no Golson, it would be nice to have Malik's blind side covered.

I like Elmer at LT and hopefully someone steps in and takes LG over (looking at you Mama).

Or the 4 other 4-stars from last year.

Adam Gorney from Rivals says Luatua will take Bama trip but he's all ND. Says Mama and JuJu loved their visit and are seriously considering joining Luatua in South Bend. Mama and Luatua are especially close.

So let me get this straight...what you are saying is ND gets all the best recruits whose names end in vowels?

And to keep the vowel theory going... it has been rumored that if the three commit to the same school them current Bama commit Viane Talamaivao will join them.
