Car chase ends with gunfire near U.S. Capitol - CNN.com

The chase began when the woman driving a black sedan got involved in some kind of verbal altercation with officers at a security checkpoint a block from the White House, the intelligence source said.
As police cars arrived at the scene, the vehicle sped away and led police on a wild chase that included running red lights, according to the source.
When the vehicle approached the area of the Capitol building more than a mile away, several squad cars stopped it and officer "came out with their guns drawn," said Frank Schwing, a D.C. resident who witnessed what happened.
The armed officers tried to open the passenger side door, he said.
"At that point, the driver slammed into reverse, slammed into a cruiser, did a 180 (degree turn), took off, and at that point, there were a half dozen or so shots fired," Schwing told CNN, apparently all by small arms from police.
The black vehicle then crashed into security barriers closer to the Capitol building, said police and witnesses.

CNN is showing footage of the incident filmed by Alhurra, "a government sponsored, Arabic news service". Wolf Blitzer noted, "we are awaiting translation of the Arabic reporting in that video".

DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier confirms the driver "was pronounced". I assume that means dead.

She, the Chief of Capital Police, and the FBI spokesperson all refused to provide any description of the driver other than the terse "pronounced".

The Capital Hill Chief said this was not believed to be an act of terrorism.

The DC Chief said this did not appear to be an accident but would not elaborate.

According to Mike McCaul, chairman of House Homeland Security Committee, in a CNN interview the Driver was described as a 34 year old, African American woman from CT. The 18 month old child in the car was her daughter. The woman "possibly had mental health issues".

A reporter had asked at the PC if the woman was Somali and Cathy Lanier declined to answer.

Blitzer asked McCaul if the woman was Somali. He responded he didn't know.
