I would choose Lautau because he can play defense as well. That being said, I think Dalton might be the better TE prospect.

I would take them both.

This is how I feel. Luatua's versatility makes this an easy question, but if we're selecting the best TE, I think that's Schultz. Unfortunately, I think Schultz is heading to Stanford.

I'd take Schultz simply to play keep away from Stanford. He has the best pure TE film I've seen of any '14 player and I think he will dominate in college.

At first I was leaning Luatua, but like stated earlier if it is for just TE I think Schultz would be my pick. There probably is not an answer for this right now but lets say Schultz picked ND before Luatua, does that make him go else where? Again just a hypothetical question.

Wouldn't it be nice if every kid handled their recruiting the way Schultz has? He's very straightforward, has a set list of things he's looking for in a college, and then comes out with a top 5 that actually reinforces that list. I like the way he handles himself.

The interview with Schultz that Loy has up today is interesting. Schultz says academics, tradition of football program and type of offense will be key factors in his decision.

He says that all his five finalists (Stanford, ND, Oregon State, UW, Utah) meet his basic criteria; now he has to
a) look more closely at each to determine how they use the tight end and
b) really think hard about how important distance is to him.

Looking at a), plus his focus on academics, you gotta feel like it will come down to Stanford and ND, as we've been expecting.

But what does he mean by b)? Of his finalists, only Utah is close. Are they a serious player? Or does he mean, am I ok with going to school across the country, as opposed to staying within a one- or two-day drive (I believe it's about 12 hours to each of Stanford, UW and OSU from his hometown)?

I can't remember where I read it, but a while back he said ND was either a.) the furthest east he would go or b.) the only school he would go east for. I can't remember which it was, but I definitely remember thinking he had a preference to stay on the west coast and ND would be the exception. I think he means the 2nd part of your question.

"To be honest, at the very end of it I didn't want to go somewhere way far back East. Like anything past Notre Dame." - Schultz

Stanford slight lead but everybody close. Top 5 is UW, Utah, Oregon state, ND, and Stanford. Hasn't visited ND yet so had this to say about his official visit. "Notre Dame is the big one for me," Schultz said. "That's one I have to visit before I decide to do anything, really." The article seems to infer that we are #2 with a very good chance to win this with a good visit.

I'd hope we'd take both if we had the opportunity to. IMO Shultz and Luatua are the #1 and #2 TE in the country

Definitely puts us in a good position.

Wasn't there the possibility of moving Luatua to d-line if we got both or is that no longer the case?

We won't get both Luatua and Schultz

Why not? There aren't multiple 5:s: WRs batting down Kelly's door at the moment. Maybe this is a sign that we should start basing out of 12 personnel.

(I'm only half kidding)

Wasn't there the possibility of moving Luatua to d-line if we got both or is that no longer the case?

OLB. Staff wants to start him out at TE though.

There is a potential for him to move to defense yes. My comment wasn't about the staff not taking both, it was that if Luatua commits to us then we will have two high quality TEs committed and Schultz will likely drop us from consideration.

The only way we get both is if Schultz commits and then the staff convinces Luatua to come to ND as a defensive player. I'd put the chances of that scenario playing out at about 2%.

IMO, Schultz is the better TE prospect, but Luatua brings more position flexibility. Can't go wrong with either. Both would be a coup.

I think it was a possibility of him playing OLB but I'm pretty sure it's been cleared up that he would definitely be playing TE for us if he came here. Either way tho, he's a versatile athlete.

This would be the corp in 2014, assuming Welch is brought back (I think he's going to have a killer season), and Smythe and Heuerman redshirt. And, of course, Schultz committed along with Luatua. It seems highly unreasonable for one position, but at the same time...

Dalton Schultz should just commit to Stanford and save everyone some time. Granted, it's an important decision and should be approached with caution; and Schultz says Notre Dame is gaining some ground on the Cardinal, but we don't think the four-star tight end will play a down of football for any college other than Stanford. David Shaw's program has led this recruitment for months, and it's only a matter of time until things become official. -

hope this is a Troy Niklas kind of recruitment

Per TV, sounds like the staff will go full press on him in January and try to get his last visit. Definitely will OV at some point after the season

Do you know who the staff has higher on their board between him and Lautua?

I think they might like him at DE. Might be wrong here though.

The guys don't say in TV, but they do say that they expect a commitment from Luatua on his USC visit, and they are trying to get Schultz to visit sometime after the season. Make of that what you will.
