I heard that Greg Bryant is going to leave ND and go back to High School Football.

Seriously, we have had way less talented RBs start as Frosh. It was due to lack of upperclassmen though. RB is stacked at the moment though, and I fully expect GB to light it up next year, if not sooner. As ND fans, we are protective of our 5 star recruits, as they are hard to get, and so many have left way before we expected.

Wait, why's that in sarcasm font? I heard that's exactly what he's doing. Was spotted at practice in Delray Beach today.

Nothing that we haven't heard already, but a nice summary of Kelly's comments regarding GB.

Kelly: Bryant not buried in Notre Dame backfield | CSN Chicago

Since GB didn't get any reps against MSU, my guess is GB will get his reps before TF gets his this week.

It's not like playing multiple QB's, but I do think BK needs to settle on two RB's for the game with one being the primary. I think the blocking will be better if he does. Every RB has their own style and the O-line will perform better when they block the same way most of the game. Cam hits the hole hard, so the linemen know they need to get on their blocks quickly and don't have to hold them quite as long. GA tends to take a week to hit a hole so they need to hold their blocks longer. Since we haven't seen a lot of our freshmen, I don't know what their true styles are just yet, but it appears they may bounce outside a little quicker, so the line needs to adjust accordingly. Having said that , the blockers don't get any real continuity through the entire game.

I'm pretty sure that the offensive line is trying to get to their blocks as quickly as possible, and hold them as long as possible, with zero consideration for who is carrying the ball.

I'd love to see us settle into more of a rotation where we've got Atkinson doing what he did last year and just getting 3-5 carries a game, Carlisle in the Riddick role, and either GB/TF in the Wood role. Save Cam for goal line and kick returns.

I dont think it matters much who is carrying the ball, the playcalls are the playcalls. Its not the Oline's fault none of the RB's see the lanes they are meant to (bar Cam, sometimes)

I have been spending more time on the MSU game Irish O-line highlights.

MSU spent most of the game with 11 men within ten yards (or so) of the line of scrimmage! Many teams line their linebackers up as deep as seven yards.

Because we have run to power, MSU's adjustments for the game gave them a hat on hat advantage on almost every running play of the game, especially when we ran power or heavy power.

This is the last frontier in establishing a good, consistent running game. Three or four people have suggested this, but if the Irish could run off play action, it would help both phases of the offense.

So the problem for the O-line doesn't have much to do with who is behind them, it is mostly those in front. In fact, I think Folston got in with no special needs, and reeled off some good positive yards off the same blocking others couldn't make work! I think the adjustments in protection are the biggest things. As that becomes more second nature, look out! They all will be ready to rock!

I may have phrased it incorrectly. I wasn't implying that they don't get on their blocks asap. I've heard a couple of Colts o-linemen over the years talk about getting into a rhythm with a RB and then having to adjust somewhat (mostly holding their blocks longer) because another back has a tendency to cut or change his direction at or behind the LOS more frequently rather than running the play as designed. They said it takes some time to get in sync with the back.

I do see #1's point... not that they are only blocking for Cam, but he does seem to have holes the other backs do not... most likely for the reasons he stated, or dumb luck.

IMO, it's more about the RBs adjusting and less about the OL. Their job should be to bust their asses and makes holes NOW no matter who is running. I think it comes down to the RB getting a feel for how the line works in terms of creating a push and opening lanes.

The RBs have to be able to adjust to the "flow" that the line creates, rather than the line adjusting to their running style. It simply doesn't make sense for the line to adjust for what's behind them when the RB can see the way things develop in front of them.

However, the point is still as you said: at some point, someone has to start getting a larger chunk of the reps so they can start to gel with the run blocking they're getting every week.

We've all heard about how much potential Greg has and if he is going to have a coming out party why not tomorrow against the Sooners. If that is the case I'd like to see the post game go like this with coach Stoops:

Media: Tough game today against Notre Dame, how would you assess the game?

Coach Stoops: They gained a lot of yards today against our defense, I was impressed with their offense.

Media: Greg Bryant who was originally committed to Oklahoma had a great day for the Irish.

Coach Stoops: Yes, he played great today, that's why we recruited him...Notre Dame has a heck of a running back for the future.

Go Irish!

I think it just comes down to he's not ready or he's just burried on the depth chart at the moment. I know he's a shiney new toy but maybe he's putting the ball on the ground or not pickin up the blitz. It's not like Ty Isaac, Smoke, Tyner are running wild. I found it weird that there are some schools who passed on him and said no thanks. But I'm super excited about Bryant's future with us. That's just my take on everything if anybody cares. Don't mean to beat a dead horse with this topic. Hopefully he comes out today and makes the most out of his situation.

Yeeeeahhh, I don't see it. Normally, a freshman not seeing time is a normal occurrence. However, those players aren't seeing time because there are players ahead of him producing. That is not the case. So far the running game has been atrocious, and it's all on the playcalling and Kelly's stubborn refusal to admit that Atkinson was a failed project. It should be McDaniel, Bryant and Folston with Carlisle being used as a hybrid slot player.

VERY surprised to see he didn't get any touches today - unless I missed it. I know we were playing from behind all game, but still thought he would get touches before TF today.

where the f*ck have you been. Folston has been gettin more touches then Bryant. Folston played very well, when you're down so many points, its tough to keep running the ball when the offense needs to score quickly, why would you throw a freshman running back out there, who hasnt been in the last 2 games. Why.. Please explain to me why.. Especially Over Tarean, who deserves more touches and showed that today..

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Quit bumping his thread. This is ridiculous. He didn't get any touches because he did not get any touches. Tune in next week for an update.

He will play when he plays. I don't understand the obsession over one player. Running game was not the problem today

He had fall camp and 4 weeks of practice to deserve touches. He is not ready obviously. For ****s sake!

Perfectly said right here, Bryant is just not ready...he'll get in when he is ready.

Derrick Green for Michigan has 13 rushes for 60 yards and 1 TD. Obviously he is not getting used as much. Patience people!

But he is the No.2 and Fitz will leave after this season. Bryant is the no.5 with the four ahead of him returning next year.

I think Carlisle is best for the slot. Kids gonna break in half if he keeps going up the middle. McDaniel is just not a feature back and GAIII had a nice run yesterday and is coming along but far from the clear cut #1 IMO. Folston needs more touches and Bryant needs to be patient. He still has a chance.
