Right. And too much in this case in my opinion.

It's definitely a small sample size, but so far they've been 'clean' and that has to count for something.

IDK if he was speaking in general, or specific to this year. If he's talking about this year, it makes sense that maybe with the bye week at week 6 he plans to work them more in practice and let them loose against USC? I hope so.

There's an old saying among coaches......."I'll take a senior over a junior anytime". What this implies is, if all other things are equal, the upperclassman will get the playing time. Why? Experience.

We have other freshmen playing, but I don't think the depth in front of them is as deep as RB.

Maybe Bryant needs to talk with Ishaq. Seems like he was a highly regarded player out of high school. I know it's a different position and on the other side of the ball before some of you blast me on that, but playing time is playing time. Ishaq took some time to "get it". Now he seems to & is playing. I think, with ND having some of the best student/athletes in college football both physically & academically, they will help Bryant, as well as all the other freshmen, get over that freshman hump. I vividly remember my freshman year. I got beat up pretty bad on the field and in the classroom. Had it not been for two things, I probably would have packed it up & left. One was, I couldn't afford college without the a scholly, & the fullback that made himself look really good in practice by cracking back on me & helping me set the world record on snot bubbles. Haha! He came to my dorm room one night & told me how the same things happened to him his freshman year. We became good friends & I was proud to tell folks when he was drafted by Green Bay, "yeah, I made him! I helped him perfect his blocking." I will always be thankful to Satterfield for that. I can see the upperclassmen doing that to Bryant, or any other freshman. It's tough on them all. Now if a player is a "me" person then that's not gonna help, but I think the coaching staff has done their best to not bring that type player in. Just my thoughts.

Mike Frank of ISD said he did some digging on the GB situation and found that the reason GB isn't seeing time is because of his knowledge of the offense and his propensity for becoming confused when Tommy checks in and out of plays and what his responsibilities are. He is improving, but not there with the other 4.

If and when he picks it up, he will probably see time. But I don't think BK is going to risk Tommy being destroyed in a close game just to appease a freshman RBs moral when he isn't fully ready to handle all his responsibilities on the field. Hopefully he hits the playbook hard and works with Malik or Tommy to improve quickly, because I'd love to see him out there.

End of discussion..................Thank IM

Ishaq is too busy finding himself and learning how to tackle. Please don't speak to ishaq!

I was just trying to say, and I obviously did it badly, that Ishaq was a 5 star and was the number 2 WDE. He was thought highly of coming in & because I am lazy & don't want to look it up, I remember some saying he was going to transfer when he didn't get any PT. He stuck it out & didn't transfer. I was only trying to say that Bryant's situation. Is not unique.

Gregs happy at ND. Its funny to see all these rumors and people trying to make something from untrue statements lol. Why are there no rumors about Max Redfield? Derrick Green? Derrick Henry? Cmon get a grip fellas...4 games and hes played in 3 of them. He knows what he has to do to get on the field and the staff will have no problem getting him on the field once that happens. Id lean towards sooner than later. Hes an 18 year old playing against 22 year olds...there will be things that need to fine tuned. Hes almost there.

My bad, man. Sorry, I have been dealing with parents all day today because their little 5 star didn't get to play Friday night. Man oh man the fun part of coaching high school football. My appologies

TP, you are a truly great fan, keep up the good work!

As far as this goes, you're being too kind. It's not actually funny. ND has lost its share of 5 stars lately, and it pisses me off to hear people starting rumors and creating a lot of bad vibes around a kid and a situation just because they feel they are entitled to better RB play.

People need to stop posting rumors and speculation as if they know something. Speculating about football stuff is one thing, making crap up about kids is just BS. It really is just bad behavior.

Thanks for the info.

In the meantime, it'd be nice if BK put together ~ 10 plays that GB could be in for that are either a run or simple passing route.

What is your big deal with getting Greg touches?

If he's not earning them, then why should he get them? If he were a three star rb would you still feel the same way?

Big name guys have to wait their turn too.
Greg has many games ahead of him. No need to force him in, especially if Kelly has better, more prepared options.

No kidding. The kid has tweeted multiple times about perseverance and waiting for his time to shine.

Won't harp on this anymore but our O-Line can't push people around...run blocking I give them a C-. So we have a RB who has trouble turning up field (GAIII), a RB who goes down pretty easy (Amir), and a slow guy who runs really hard but strikes no fear in opposing defenses (Cam). I just believe that GB will cut up-field, won't go down easy, and will run as hard as Cam and may put some juice in our running game. we wouldn't need to "force him out there"...I'm certain that he's pretty willing to run out there on his own.

Great update, and interesting point on the possible confusion when Rees changes up protections. I distinctly remember Folston acting semi-panicked and looking at his arm band during a play against MSU. It has to be a lot for a true frosh to take in.

The issue isn't the talent of the runners, as IM8's update clearly states.

You literally cannot put Greg on the field if he is going to be confused by any calls/checks/audibles/hot-routes/protection-changes that Tommy makes at the line. It would only take one missed block to get Tommy wrecked in the pocket.

Just because you have a problem with me doesn't mean you have to trail me on this board and comment on everything I say. It's flattering, but I'm not interested I arguing with you.

Greg's a super talented and none of the upperclassmen have ran away with the job. I don't think I need to explain why I'd like to see Greg get some carries considering 99% of Irish fans feel the same way.

thanks for the post IM

however, idk how hard you can make pass pro schemes to the point of keeping a kid that's super talented off the field. granted i've never coached college football before and have no idea how in depth it is, but imo that would not be enough for me to keep him off the field if he was good enough to be on it.

Pass pro assignments can get a little crazy, but a coach is going to be even less willing to put a player out there if his quarterback depth is weak. Which it is. If Bryant wiffs and Rees gets hurt, the season is over. I would guess that that's a concern.

That said, Folston isn't blocking and yet he's out there. It's probably checks in general. It can be tough for a guy who perhaps wasn't asked to do anything in high school outside of run the ball straight and make magic happen. I don't want to over simplify high school football, but it's not FBS ball.

I'm often in agreement that there is a reason that someone is a 3 star. The elite guys are very often the top tier 5 star guys. But that's not always the case...

Rivals and ESPN both had him GB as the number two RB in the nation coming out of HS...composite he was 7th. It's just troubling to me that we seem to believe that we have three RBs already on the squad that are considered better. I'm glad to hear that he is being patient and grinding. I also know that we don't get to see what's happening in practice which is a big blind spot. I'll shut my mouth now and watch this play out.

BK - we are not in a four man rotation at running back - five is still the number - we only got to four against MSU.

Irish Sports Daily ‏@ISDUpdate 1m

BK - we need to try and get five RB's in the game - it's not about anyone not being ready.

Yeah it sounds like its basically situational. They script certain plays for each RB and Folston's plays just made sense in the flow of the game at a certain point, and Bryant's didn't. That was the impression I got listening to the presser.
