This is taking me back. I was a big metalhead in high school and undergrad. Melodic Swedish death was my preference. Opeth, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Soil Work, etc.

Agreed. I find when most people say they don't like metal, what they're really referring to <del>is</del> are amelodic songs or guttural vocals. This is where you need to guide them to better choices - like Opeth.
