Green paint splattered on the Lincoln Memorial

Damn kids with their rock n roll music, long hair, and mischief...(what OMM and dshans mutter under their breath after reading this). ;)

Seriously though, can't figure out what this vandalism would hope to accomplish. Nothing a little turpentine can't fix I guess.

I don't understand. I just got to spend about a month near D.C. for work and the first thing I wanted to do was go see this memorial.

Is the Lincoln Memorial being sponsored by the Home Depot paint department maybe? "More Saving, More Doing." That's all I got.

Just to be clear I want the record to reflect that I WAS/AM one of those damn long haired rock 'n' roll lovin' kids. As a "purist" hippie I never understood, condoned or participated in acts of violence or vandalism. I neither damn nor sanctify "kids," regardless of their age. I'll go only this far and say that "it's a damn shame." Far too many treasures have been defaced or destroyed in the guise of one cause or another.

The Lincoln Memorial was one of my stops when I was in DC for an anti-war protest in May of '71. It is impressive and awe inspiring. I feel sad that the Civil War/War Between The States/War of Northern Aggression came about. It was a devastating and useless loss of life.

As far as the hair on my 61 year old pate: It's fluctuated between red, blonde and grayish; crew cut, flat top, "preppy," waist length and now something of a post modern punk-spike mixture of gray and white. I had my head shaved in April as a participant in a St. Baldrick's Day charity event to raise funds for childhood cancer research. Most of it grows back no matter what I do to it, though I've gained a bit of forehead and lost a bit of mane over the years.

The times they are (always) a-changin'.

That's crazy, I had just thought all the hippies faded away after '69...on a related note, did you know you were a few years late to be protesting the Civil War?

Joking aside, other than the Vietnam War Memorial a.k.a. "The Wall", offset by the joke of a secondary, "respectful" memorial, I found the Lincoln Memorial to be the most powerful in the Washington D.C. area (Washington's Pool at the base of the stairs doesn't hurt).

I was, for a good time as a teenager, obsessed with Thomas Jefferson. I thought the Jefferson Memorial was pretty great. The WWII Memorial is also top notch. The uniqueness of the Roosevelt Memorial is also worth checking out.

D.C. is one of my favorite towns, because you could literally go on for a while talking about all the places worth checking out.

Jefferson was really close in my mind as well. IIRC you could look up and around the circular room and do some constitutional reading.

On my 8th grade trip to DC, I received my first blow job on the grounds of the Jefferson Memorial. Needless to say, it's been my favorite ever since, although the Vietnam and Korean War memorials were pretty cool too.

Last night down town I sat at an outdoor bar. Near me was an anti government, anti military, anti religion yuppie going on a 15 minute rant about how Lincoln was racist. Before I left I told her I hope the police find and arrest her for defacing the memorial in DC. She didn't think I was funny.

10,000 hours cleaning up green paint with a toothbrush in public and some heavy fines sounds about right.

Green paint found on Smithsonian statue, organ at National Cathedral - The Washington Post

D.C. Police announced the arrest of a woman connected to two new green splatter defacements. No details and no mention if connected to Lincoln Memorial.

If they catch the dude (or Dudette) I'm sure the defense will be freedom of expression or possibly freedom of speech. Worse Thanksgiving in family history was when we fell into a debate on Flag Burning. Thank god I'm a fast eater and got to the other room before things got out of control. I know I'm off topic. Whoever did this is an ingrate!

There's a good All in the Family episode similar to that situation...Mike's friend visits and he is a vietnam war draft dodger

Watched every episode of All in the Family...my dad and Archie were never spotted in the same room. Some thought they were the same person. My brother in law is Meat-Head personified!
