The Hobbit... Eh... Would have been better had it not been three hours and had there not already been 12 hours of film exactly like it...

Just watched two not so good sequels, Taken 2 and A Good Day To Die Hard. Neither one was very good. Neither one needed to be made. Unfortunately they'll probably both have another installment in their series.

In the Valley of Elah, ironically enough. Thought it was a very good movie.

I haven't seen "Taken 2" but I'll second your opinion on "A Good Day to Die Hard." It was very disappointing. The 4th "Die Hard" was actually a decent action movie and I probably would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't a "Die Hard" movie but just its own movie. But the most recent installment just sucked all around. It would not have been good on its own and putting the "Die Hard" name on it just added insult to injury. By the way, today, July 15, is the 25th anniversary of the release of the original. So forget about the crappy recent sequels and treat yourself to the good stuff.

I watched "Behind the Candelabra" last night. It is a pretty good movie, engaging, solid performances. But if you take out the fact that you've got two A-list male actors kissing and simulating sex, it's a pretty conventional story. Older, powerful person falls for a young, pretty person and a roller coaster relationship follows.

I read that director Steven Soderbergh said that a major Hollywood studio would not produce the movie because it was "too gay." That's probably true, but I think the "gayness" was the only reason the movie got made at all. If it was basically the same movie, but with an older man and a younger women or vice versa, no one would likely be interested because the story has been told dozens of times before. Anyway, it's worth a watch.

Die Hard is a classic... The third one with Jackson was good enough to carry the name of the first... all others were just laughably bad imo...

I know, I'm really asking for it with that post. So today I'm going to drink a liter of bourbon and get into a bar fight to compensate.

Finally saw "Children of Men"... VERY GOOD filmmaking in a few scenes there with the uninterrupted shoots... the story itself didn’t grab me at all and some of the scenes had such great filmmaking I found myself focused on the fact I was watching a very difficult scene to pull off, rather than watching a movie and getting lost in it… I could watch it again for that aspect though I wouldn’t call it a good movie beyond that…

I felt the same way with some of the Lord of The Rings stuff…

Here's my list of movies I have watch in the past two months (yes, I am a loser):

Life of Pi
Perks of Being a WallFlower
Black Swan
Girl w/ Dragon Tatoo
Once

The Pianist
Taken 2
Momento
A Beautiful Mind
Ted
Bourne Legacy
Drive
Catch Me If You Can
The Place Beyond ..Pines
Garden State
Adventureland
Almost Famous
American Beauty
The Help
Juno
Easy A
Before Sunrise
Say Anything
500 Days of Summer
We Bought a Zoo
The Usual Suspects
Up in the Air
The Virgin Suicides
Beautiful Girls
Closer
Its Kind of a Funny Story
High Fidelity

I'm not sure if these are available on Netflix, but most were pretty good. I'd recommend the bolded ones without question, and most of the others too.

I use IMDB to get an idea of what each movie is about before watching (it also gives ratings, which can be useful).

Witness for the Prosecution is pretty awesome. Anything Hitchcock is worthwhile. I'm sure you've seen the Truman Show but if not do it. Old Boy is a pretty awesome foreign flick as is the Bicycle Thief. The Evil Dead, Paper Chase, all the Beverly Hills Cops are other possibilities.

So you didn't like High Fidelity, Juno, Almost Famous, Garden State and Memento any more than Easy A?

Are you a communist or something? lol

Thanks for the choices. I just watched The African Queen (better than I remember it as a kid), so maybe I'll check out a few more of those classics.

The Moth Diaries... lol

my wife had it on TV last night... hot girls in a boarding school... that's about all in terms of what is worth mentioning...

Pacific Rim... there are some movies I just know I will make me want to kick puppies and throw stuff without even taking the time to prove the theory... Pac Rim and Man of Steel are two great examples... you'd honestly have to pay me for my time.

Haha, I did like all of those more than Easy A (except maybe Juno), just didn't highlight them as they aren't great for all groups, IMO. High Fidelity and Garden State were exellent though. With Almost Famous not far behind. It all just depends on what your into though, and I'm "into" Emma Stone (well, that sounds weird).

On another note, has anyone seen Revolutionary Road or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I'm thinking about watching them soon, and wanted to see if you guys had any opinions on them.
Another I was considering watching is City Lights (1931), but I'm not a big fan of older movies. Has anyone seen it/ can shed light on how people today view it? Thanks.

Saw it a long time ago, but I remember really enjoying it, I feel comfortable recommending that one.

I know I'm skirting heresy here, but I finally saw "Fletch" and I wasn't too impressed. I'm surprised I never saw it before, and guys my age always expressed shock that I never did, me being a movie guy. One guy I worked with always harassed me about it. So I finally watched it and...nothing. I guess I "had to be there" and had to have seen it when it first came out. It struck me as a mildly entertaining 80s mystery/comedy that hasn't aged well. My wife liked it even less, so I put on "Beverly Hills Cop" to show her what a classic 80s detective/comedy looked like. So many guys put "Fletch" in the same 80s classic pantheon as "Vacation" or "Caddyshack" or "Animal House." I don't see it.

Take out animal house (never been a fan) and add in Spies Like Us.

Watching the new 'Evil Dead' tonight. I'll be happy if it is 2/3 as good as the original or somewhere close to that fraction.

I personally love Fletch, and will even sit through Fletch Lives when it is on TV. It blows my mind someone so funny became such a joke (no pun intended) in Hollywood and is F list these days. Ive always heard how nobody wanted to work with Chevy Chase because he is a gigantic prick, but it still sucks his career derailed so suddenly after a solid run of movies.

Just as gory. Not as scary. Not campy at all. Got a big meh out of me. The originals camp is what made it great IMO

Chase still hasn't learned his lessons. Apparently, his dickishness got the creator of "Community" fired from his own show. Then, the network turns around and cans Chase the next season because he's such a monumental douche. Too bad, he was so great on SNL and in so many movies throughout the 80s.
