have to say, the casting people for GOT have abslutely "hit out of the park" on actor/actress selection for just about every single character...wouldnt you all agree?

only one im not entriely thrilled with was Ygritte...

I would agree here, too, except for Michelle Fairley (Cat Stark). Otherwise I'm good. I really like Emilia Clarke. I think she has been great.

Interesting fact, Emilia wasn't the original choice to play the role. Another actress was chosen, who in my opinion looks nothing like Danny, she had to drop out of the role due to a scheduling conflict. We can all thank the seven for that series of fortunate events.

departing a bit from Game of Thrones...would be intersting to have a list of famous roles that were offered to people who turned them down only to have someone else make it a "role of a lifetime".

if memory serves, i think Jack Nicholson was 3rd choice for Chinatown (cant remeber who was first and second-maybe Kietel)

IIRC, Christopher Walken turned down the role of Han Solo.

The studio wanted Burt Reynolds to star in Rocky.

Nic Cage was Peter Jackson's first choice for Aragorn. He turned it down for "family reasons". Lists it as his greatest professional regret.

Might have ruined the trilogy.

Man. He would have been ok. But I always thought Viggo Mortensen is PERFECT as the guy who "looks foul and feels fair", as Aragorn is described in the books. Mean looking but nice seeming. Nic Cage has that quality, but not to the same extent.

Nic Cage....REALLY>?????<

Thank the Gods!

That bit of casting alone would have destroyed one of the most important characters in the novels!

I took a British Narrative Fantasy class in college and got to read RotK. We spent two weeks of class discussing this very property of Aragorn. Awesome stuff.

I also had to write a research paper for the class, so I doubled-dipped with a criticism class and wrote a poststructuralist criticism of the last Harry Potter book. I'm now realizing how cool that class was.

This is interesting and brings up some names already discussed here (this is similar but different to the article Phork posted).

IMDb: Actors & Actresses Who Turned Down Important or Popular Roles !! - a list by MJ_Batigol

Bill Murray takes the cake though. Turned down the following roles:

Han Solo
Boone from Animal House
The Jerk
Splash
Dusty Bottoms from Three Amigos
Rainman (Tom Cruise's character)
Batman/Bruce Wayne
and many many more: Bill Murray Almost Roles: List of Parts Nearly Played by Bill Murray

John Travolta turneddown Forrest Gumption. For some reason that visual is as hilarious as nick cage as Aragorn.

This!
Now even picture current facelifted Travolta in the role for an even bigger laugh!
