I realize that last post may have come off a little agressive, but I didn't really mean it that way. Just telling you some things you have have missed that can lean you into the field of understanding why the staff may have taken him. And no, I'm not a scout... don't pretend to be. I just think this kid is a solid player. Compare his film to a few 4:s: and you will realize it's not too entirely different.

And as a wise man once told me, 6' 4" 245# HS kids don't grow on trees.

I didn't see it in his film is all I'm saying. But that was a year ago, and the staff saw him in person a week ago, apparently against really good OL, so what do I know.

I wish we could see more film of him at LB. I think he looked solid at TE actually.

I strongly suspect both his offer list and rankings will improve. Either way, happy to have a versatile player who clearly wants to be here.

Yup. Which translates to athleticism, which generally translates well to LB. It will be interesting to see if he lines up there more this fall.

First of all, huge props to Tom Lemming for calling this out before he was even offered. He was in a recruiting article this morning in the South Bend Tribune and said to watch for an offer to be sent out to this kid, 2 hours after I read it the kid had an offer.

I agree with Philly on the Okwara comparison. Good off the ball and it was good to hear that he dominated some stud offensive linemen. I highly doubt he plays CAT though, he is 240 already and could very well be 260-270 by week 1 of next year. CAT or end, he sure does have pass rush skills.

I think he is our sleeper in this class and with Shembo and Williams on the brink of graduation, Bonner will probably be in the 2-deep when he is a sophomore.

Good pick up. Some of you have to realize that the staff can't go after 5 and 4 star recruits all the time. That's how you get burned in recruiting, just ask Charlie Weis

People on this board can be comical when it comes to recruiting stars. I will trust Brian Kelly eyeballing the recruit at camp in person. He has been doing this 20 plus years,in addition to the D-line coach. This kind of attitude from fans would be like-lets not take Ryan Kerrigan, Jordan Kovacks, Max Bullough, or Luke Kuechly, all too slow. Instead they all ate us for lunch, right? Trust Brian Kelly and staff, not everybody wins the Heisman but can be a key piece in the puzzle, ex.-John Goodman, KLM

Who has said anything about 'recruiting stars'?

I don't think a single person has.

Similarly Okwara came in at 6'4" 245lb IIRC and he's still at OLB. I like this kid more than a lot of the other lower star kids we've taken in recent years.

I've been reading this thread on and off from my beach chair all day and I've been impressed with the reaction of everyone on here. People have genuinely been trying to see in Jonathan what the staff sees in him without being real critical of him or the staff, which everyone recognizes they know a lot more than us. I haven't had a chance to take a close look at him, but I'm encouraged by what I've read on this thread.

6'4" + 4.8 and supposed to be able to play all LB positions? What? Seems awfully large for an ILB...

Glad we're grabbing some "glue" guys... got to keep building the correct culture. Also, IMO, says a lot about Nelson and Williams. (I know people are saying he's a LB candidate so you wouldn't have overlap with Nelson but at 6'4" 245 with that frame they could easily bulk him up into DE size a la KLM if they desired.)

He looks like a little bit bigger version of KLM coming out of high school. I can't see him playing LB...his hand will be on the ground.

Yeah UND.com lists Okwara at 239. So basically he turned his baby fat (the little bit that he had) into muscle from HS to College.

Excellent signing. Jonathan Bonner is exactly the sort of high-ceiling, under-rated recruit that was the key to the success Harbough had at Stanford and now Saban is having at Alabama.
Good motor and ability, tough, great addition to the team.

My Spidey sense tells me that Kelly may already know this.

Raise your handif u saw this one coming today...

I saw this one coming a month ago!

Seriously. There is a poster that people have gotten on for negative comments, that had a wonderful early post. I watched this thread and some regulars were damned outright pedantic, until the whole story about this kids ability came out.

Here is what I saw, and granted I am coming in late. This kid has pretty good upper body strength, and this kids explosiveness and closing speed is the second best I have seen in the classes of '13 and '14. And Jaylon is the fastest I have ever seen! *

Okwara was one of the top 'weight gainers' this offseason - Physical development key to Irish offseason | Inside the Irish

This article says he's 250, up from 231. I think the point is, the staff is going to do work with these kids, whether that's bulking them up (KLM) or maintaining their weight (+/- 15-20lbs) while transforming their body (Romeo).

Can you imagine what Romeo will do with another twenty pounds of the right stuff? Better start learning his name; O-k-w-a-r-a!

That's my impression. From what I've gathered:
  • Impressed our staff in pass-rushing drills against elite OL talent;
  • Offered expressly as a ROLB; and
  • Some (his coach?) have speculated that he could easily put on good weight.

So he stays lean and follows Shembo's path, or he bulks up and follows KLM's path. I agree with the comparisons to Okwara. Regardless, that kind of versatility is very helpful, and it sounds like he's got a high ceiling.

Spell this L-o-n-g-o. Paul looks at these kids early on and the conversation is had and the decision is made. That is why I disagree with the board sometimes. I go with what Longo says. He is a big part of the "Genius Staff", as OMM puts it. (And OMM is right!)

There was plenty to get up about in his film. How about that he caught up to a RB from behind within 10 yards. Or his ability to shove offensive tackles back into the LOS, jamming up holes. Not much to get excited about a kid athletic enough to be the starting TE on his HS team.

The kid is a hell of a player. His HS is about 15 min away from me so I'll check him out a few times this fall.

Also, with the recent transfers, we have a little room to take some 'projects' if need be. On that note, I don't think he's a project. He can be a solid contributor to ND football.[/QUOTE]

Zactly! That play jumped off the page. Tuitt made a play where he ran down a running back from behind, and I don't think the distance to be made up was as far, and it got all the oohs, and ahs! His closing speed and ability to set and keep the edge are almost as impressive as Jaylon Smiths. No one beat him on the edge!

* Among linemen and linebackers. Strength and Big skill.

“The academics for sure, and the fact that they have a great program,” Bonner said were some of the reasons he committed. “Along with those academics, they’re a highly respected team. It’s not too far from home. My great uncle stays about eight minutes from the campus. Almost everything went right with them.”

Bonner, 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, will play the CAT linebacker position in the Irish’s 3-4 defensive scheme. The position consists of about 90 percent pass rushing. The rest of the time Bonner will drop in pass coverage.

He went to Notre Dame’s camp last weekend and spent the first session working out at defensive end. Some of the Irish’s committed offensive linemen and several BCS-level linemen went up against Bonner, and Bonner said he did not lose any one-on-one drills.

Before the following session, Bonner started cramping, and the coaches told him he did not need to participate in the second part of the camp. Bonner still ran a 40-yard dash for the coaches, who then wanted to see Bonner’s agility and movement. They put him in linebacker and pass coverage drills, where he continued to excel.

He finished the camp with more one-on-one competitions with the linemen.

“The coaches said they couldn’t find someone to beat me,” Bonner said.

If he can play any of the 4 LB, I personally want him for the will. I want a big bodied dude who can play off a guard coming at him and still make the tackle. Hey that's just me though.
Yeah, he might be a tad tall at 6'4", but I've already seen him at 6'3" on one report in his thread, so we all know heights with HS football he might be 6'1-6'2".
