He is not a defining player in any class. What he is - or at least should be - is a player that can come in a play a down or two in a 6-7 rotation on the D line. Instead of the Irish trying to hit home runs (Williams is not that yet) with one or two five star D linemen I would suggest trying to get 3-4 really good players that can rotate in and out throughout the game. Against elite teams I think you have to have 6-7 guys rotating to be able to make a difference in the late third and fourth quarters. There are some really good 3 star DL that can contribute some throughout the course of a game as well. Just my opinion...

SEC math. I love it.

ND should strive to get the best players possible, period. I don't care if that's four 5-stars or four 3-stars or any combination in between.

There is not another CAT prospect in this class I'd rather have than Williams, with probably the exception of Lorenzo Carter if he wants to be part of something special. Williams is going to be a stud.

But if you are only getting one and missing on three or four of the five star recruits are you really accomplishing anything? There is a reason the top tier teams in the SEC have seen a lot of success recently. They all have DL's with a 6-8 player rotation. Unless the Irish plan on signing that many elite DL prospects I would recommend getting quality depth on the line... and that doesn't always mean having five stars after your name.

Did you read my post above?

I completely agree with you and I think most people would agree with you.

Last years team had the big names of Tuitt, Nix, KLM and quality depth in Kona, Springman, Day, Chase (before he got injured), Ishaq.

Yes, that means you're getting a 5-star talent. The staff doesn't say, "Ok, we're going to sign one elite guy (5-star), two 4-stars, and a 3-star". They say, "Ok, we have 4 spots open, let's fill these spots with the best available talent". They don't care about stars and just because they miss out on the hypothetical three or four 5-stars doesn't mean they aren't going to fill the # of spots they have available.

I agree completely that you need solid depth on the DL.

My SEC math comment was re: your insinuation that one or two 5-stars = 3-4 really good players. A 5-star counts against the scholarship #'s the same as a 3 or 4 star (except in the SEC).

You bring in the best guys for the number of spots you have, period. Thanks.

I did read it and believe we are all saying the same thing... just putting it differently I guess. Get the best player that you can get to fill the need. I think Williams is one of those players that can do just that. And I think he ends up at ND in the end. The Irish are doing well with their current prospects on the DL and if they can close on a couple of them they will be just fine moving forward if the Big 3 leave early.

Who are the big 3 you are referring to? Tuitt, Nix and?

I do think the dline is shaping up well also. Trumbetti is a stud, Hayes is a good player...throw in Holley, Thomas :) and Williams would be perfect.

I was referring to KLM but forgot he was a senior.

No worries. Nix won't come back after this year. I also think Tuitt leaves after this year. Most people on IE twill disagree about this because of his mother. But you can't pass up the draft if you are going to be a top 15 pick.

I would say that Sheldon Day should be considered part of the new big 3. You have to remember LSU wanted him bad.

I agree on Nix. He has to go as he will be a top 5 pick I believe. Don't know the Tuitt situation about his mother but I agree he will be a top 15 pick and maybe higher depending on a particular team's needs in the draft. Both are great, great players for sure.

If Day lives up to his hype - and there is no reason to think he won't - he could be a guy that can make a huge difference for you guys.

You seem like a pretty good guy.

Are you related to the former IE poster AllGaytor?

Didn't he get banned for being a major troll? Won the Troll of the Year Award or something? No... not related.

How long have you been surveying this site without being an official poster?

I'm starting to think you're really an Irish fan who is pretending to be a Bama fan that we can all somewhat appreciate...

Actually started visiting in December leading up to the title game. Then I waited a while for the results of the game to die down a little... I didn't know if I would be welcomed right after the game. Too many trolls running around.

I have always cheered for the Irish since I was a teen in the 80's - who can forget the classic Irish/Cane matchups? I still don't understand why people try to drag ND through the mud. But a Bama fan I am. And a Bama dad as well as my son is a soph there. Even still, until the Tide and the Irish line up opposite each other then I say "Go Irish" and "Roll Tide."

Actually received a rather large donation today from another poster. I was set to bank roll my $170 on the Heat Spurs game tonight and the donor hit me up with a nice set of change. He said Go Big or Go Home.

Not sure about this but my buddy said he read on ISD that Williams is now wanting to play in a 4-3 defense? is this true and how much would play into his decision? I personally feel like he keeps getting further and further away from ND. Again no personal source or anything just asking about it.

One of the reason I have been uneasy on where we stand with him is due to him publicly stating that he thinks of himself as a 4-3 DE. Auburn and Clemson have done a great job convincing him of that.

I realize there are subtle differences between a 4-3 defensive end and a 3-4 outside linebacker, but a recruit's opinion of which he is better suited for seems like a pretty inane thing on which to base the biggest decision of his young life.
Schemes change. Coaches change. Players and their bodies change. Guys rotate back and forth between the two positions, as we do with Shembo and Ishaq. Coaches find ways to put their most talented guys on the field. All that's flexible.
What doesn't change is that you can play big-time football and get to the NFL at either Notre Dame or Clemson but Notre Dame is going to set you up far better for life after football.
Do the right thing, Andrew. Don't obsess about a scheme.

^yeah third or fourth. Our best shot at a CAT is Yeargin, but even if he commits i would bet we will still pursue Carter and Williams until they commit somewhere else or stop showing interest.

If you read articles from non-ND reporters, this has been easy to call for a couple of months now. When people here were assuming he would commit to ND and that he was 'ours to lose', I wrote this two weeks ago:

I think maybe it's in the way people define "ours to lose". To me, that means ND is the clear leader and all we have to do is close the deal. I think you have the same definition I do. Others might view the term differently (which is fine).

By our definition, no way is he ND's to lose. He likes other schools to, and gushes about them as well. Auburn, Ole Miss, Miami, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson...he loves them all. He can't wait to see Georgia Tech (his brother is there) and LSU as well. I mean, if you listen to him in his interview with Farrell, he names a ton of schools he has major interest in.

I've never thought he'd be Irish like I have felt with other recruits. Even if he were to say we were his number 1, I'd still put him signing with us at about 40%. I just don't think he likes ND as much as he puts on. Almost like he likes the idea of ND (makes him sound like he wants all the right things in a school), but not actually going through with it...

You bet we're going to still going to recruit Williams, especially if Yergin can move inside. And you don't stop recruiting a player the caliber of Carter.
