Per ISD, seems like he had a good academic meeting with the ND guys regarding med school. Will visit Stanford the 18th and Iowa at least one more time and then make a decision within the next few weeks. Seems like he has an idea which team leads but wouldn't tell ISD which way he is leaning.

The II write up had nothing to it really. Good visit, it was mainly about academics. He feels comfortable with how ND set things up for him. TJ chimed in and said that he thinks ND did what we needed to here. Now it's up to Stanford and Matt to see what's best for him. Not sure if this will play into his decision but We are recruiting him as a DE and Stanford TE.

Any indication on how bad the staff wants him? Could he commit or is he waiting on others to move first?

99% sure he is very desired by the staff and we would take him in an instant.

I'll second that. I think the staff really likes his upside. He'll be taking his Stanford visit and then probably one at Iowa. Then decide soon after. Look for it to come at the end of June or early July.

Recruiting Week in Review

Matt Nelson, DE, 6-8, 245, Xavier High School, Cedar Rapids, IA made a return visit to South Bend last weekend. This time Nelson, who hopes someday to be a surgeon, wanted to examine how well Notre Dame could prepare him for medical school. The talented Iowan got the answers he was looking for.

“It’s doable according to the team doctor,” reported Nelson. “I think it’s a challenge, but if you really have your heart into it, you can easily do it.”

Nelson got a great idea of the difficulties involved when he spoke to Brian Ratigan. Not only is Ratigan the Notre Dame team surgeon but is also a former Irish football player. Additionally, he spoke in depth with key academic advisers.

“I talked to the Dean of Science and the team doctor,” said Nelson. “I was really impressed with how many options you could choose from. There are three major routes that people take. It seems like a lot but it’s really doable with all of the resources that Notre Dame has access to.”

On the football side, Nelson got the chance to speak with Defensive Coordinator Bob Diaco and his position coach, Defensive Line Coach Mike Elston.

“They just told me how I would be used as a defensive end and how I would fit into their system,” related Nelson. “They gave me the molds of Tony (Springmann) and (Stephon) Tuitt.”

Nelson plans to decide soon and has decided on a top three of Notre Dame, Iowa and Stanford. He has yet to visit Stanford but plans to do so on June 18th. After that he will possibly return to Iowa one more time before he makes his decision. And while Nelson has a good idea of where he stands he’s remaining mum on that for now.

“I’m not really going to disclose that right now.”

Interestingly Barton Simmons says a source close to Nelson doesn't see him leaving Iowa which prompted Simmons to Crystal Ball the Hawkeyes.

I'd be shocked if it isn't Stanford. But that Iowa quote is kinda shocking as well...

This. I didn't really think they had a dog in this race...or at least not one with a legitimate chance to win.

Is he looking to play the process out or is he looking to commit when it feels right?

I am surprised he got an offer, I wouldn't think he would get an offer unless we missed on some bigger fish. But I guess if the staff wants him then we should all want him

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Matt Nelson, a 6-7, 249-pound defensive end, visited Stanford this weekend. He told HawekeyeReport.com that he plans one more visit to Iowa City before he sits down to make a decision among his three finalists, which is Iowa, Stanford and Notre Dame.

He hopes to have things wrapped up by early July if possible and is focused on three factors.

“It’s academics, which they all have what I’m looking for really, and then just the player-coach relationship and if I’m going to be able to play or not,” Nelson said.

That quote is confusing to me. If his belief is that Iowa offers the same level of education as Stanford and ND, then he ends up at Iowa. He has the best relationship with ND's staff which he's mentioned before. Lastly, his best possible chance to see the field early is Iowa. So I'll say he's headed to Iowa. Kind of surprising, I always thought this was a Stanford/ND battle.

I'm betting Iowa too. If he wants to play and stay local, he'll go to Iowa. He also wants to be a doctor (?) and Iowa is a good choice for med school.

That's not what he said. He said: “It’s academics, which they all have what I’m looking for really,"

He said all three has what he is looking for. He did not say he believes they are all on the same level.

Cedar Rapids is only about 20 miles from Iowa City and is deep in their love for the Hawkeyes. Very hard to pull someone from the area, especially is they grew up a fan.

Not bashing the kid at all but I just don't take this as a big loss if we don't pull him. Not crazy about his tape on either side of the ball. Not that I wouldn't be happy for him if he choose the Irish, but I do like other guys on the board much more.

One of the guys at II, can't recall which one at this moment said that they don't think Blankenship will jump this week. According to his coach he has a lot of visits that he wants to make with a decision coming before the end of summer. FWIW.

If he is not visiting Iowa anymore I have to think that hints at it being Stanford

Matt's twitter is protected, therefore, I have no clue which way he is leaning. If I had to guess it would be Stanford.

Edit: I changed my mind. Read through the thread and listened to an interview with him. I think he's Irish.
