Notre Dame freshman Jaylon Smith impresses in the weight room

has put on 10 pounds of muscle this spring, and his trainer thinks he'll put on another 10 or so once he gets on campus. he has been running track this year which has kept some weight off him. he will compete in the state meet after his 4x100 meter relay team won its regional last weekend. is doing 300 lbs on the bench for part of his workout, trainer says he would probably max out between 320 and 330. his goal is to start at linebacker this fall and should report to camp around 235-240.

That would be crazy. Could allow Ishaq to move to DE. Then it might be Vanderwho?

I know someone who competed in the 4x100 at state today and i think he said Jaylons team placed third. As seeing him play firsthand he is a beast, the guy would blow up offensive linemen that were close to 300 pounds; i think he can get some good playing time this year

I think Grace will work out fine, and if we end up having to move to a 4-3 we'll need a replacement for Shembo more than another MLB I think.

Just re-watched the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and Jaylon was all over the field, making plays, blocking kicks. Announcers must have mentioned his name close to 20 times.

Ishaq and Jaylon would play different positions. Ishaq is at cat linebacker and Jaylon will be at dog linebacker.

Right now I see the depth chart as this...
CAT-Shembo, Ishaq, Okwara

DOG- Spond, Smith, Councell

After 2013, there is going to be a yawning gap at Will linebacker screaming for a starter to run alongside Grace.

The more I think about it / read everything Michael Deeb puts out there, I think he is going to be that guy are a RS Freshman. Every single thing that kid says and does is all about football and preparing himself to be the best player possible when he gets here.

I think he is going to be a coaches and fan favorite. Can't wait to see what he can do on the field.

I agree he seems like a tireless worker and if the staff tells him that he's got a shot at starting by his sophomore year he'll be ready. I want to bring in a big time ILB but not because I lack confidence in Deeb but the depth at the position is scary bad. One injury and we're in trouble. I am really excited to hear about this group during camp. I imagine we'll start to get some updates towards the end of June on who looks ready to compete and that will give us something to talk about.

From what I understand ideally you want the cat and dog to be interchangeable. If Jaylon came in that much of a baller and that heavy you could basically shift Okwara, Smith and Councell around as needed to either rush the passer or drop into coverage.

That is a lotta athleticism at the OLB positions. Smith and Ishaq probably the most athletic but I'm a big fan of Shembo. Spond has done so well but not sure if he will be able to hold off a guy like Smith. And I really like Councell and Okwara. I think our 3rd stringers could be starters at a number of top D1 schools. Love the talent Kelly and Diaco have been able to bring in for that position. Just need to get MLB to that level again!

Wasn't there talk at some point about Councell maybe moving inside in 2014 if we do not secure any elite ILB prospects that would possibly be ready to start as freshmen?

You figure we lose Shembo after this year and I think Spond so then we likely have Smith at DOG and Ishaq at CAT, Grace at MIKE, but who would be the WILL? Moore? I'm not sure how much eligibility he has left, either. Maybe Deeb if they want to keep Councell at OLB.

personally I want Councell to move to ILB...of course I know less than the staff, but I feel like there will be more time available for him there with Jaylon only being a freshman.

granted you want quality depth, but I'm worried about not getting this guy on the field enough if he stays at DOG

Shembo is probably the best player on the defense after Nix and Tuitt, and will be a high draft pick. Poor man's Terrell Suggs (which is quite a compliment). No way he comes off the field except to rest him.

A reporter made the most of a Kelly comment. Kelly was just picking a name for instance. Also, no truth to the rumor that Kelly wants Spond to move inside.

Can't swim backwards? Don't want! We need versatile players that can swim frontwards, backwards, sideways and even underwater if we need them too.

With all the depth, I forgot he was part of the class.

Yeah right.

On another note, if swimming test is part of football camp, it's as useless as 2 other items.
1) 40 yd. dash for OL
2) T*ts on a bull
