It happens all the time with every top program, yes including Alabama. Players take a second look at the depth chart and come to a conclusion that they may not be able to see some playing time like they thought (i.e. Gunner Kiel), or probably may not have what it takes academically to succeed at the classes there (i.e. Everett Golson), or would rather play closer to home (i.e. Aaron Lynch), or some other reason.
For those of you thinking it will wreck the program instantaneously, it won't. Yes it is a setback because we are losing an impact player on offense from last year but we still have a good amount of high impact recruits staying at Notre Dame including Jaylon Smith and Greg Bryant among others.
Even though we made the National Championship game last year we were not at the position that we aim to be, which is be able to compete for National Championship EVERY YEAR! We got lucky because Everett Golson was a gem for us and our defense was 2nd in the entire country behind, who else, Alabama.
Let's keep bringing in quality recruits that want to come to Notre Dame and stay there, building our program back to a perennial National Championship contender.
