Police Officers have power trips. College students drink and make poor decisions (not always at the same time). "Assault" definitions are dumb, by the definitions above I HOPE to be able to assault my wife tonight. By assault, I mean touch. See how dumb that is?

Drinking laws are counterproductive. Who cares if kids drink as long as they don't drive after doing it. Floyd could have f-ing killed someone driving with a .18 BAC. Rees was only going to hurt himself wandering SB drunk. So throwing the book at this 19 year old accomplishes what? Prohibition on a smaller scale is all we are dealing with, it does not work and I would say causes more harm than good.

SBPD sees a party and sees some easy arrests and revenue for the city and her sacred defense attorneys. They really don't care about the future of the kids they arrest, they view them all as spoiled rich kids that have an unfair advantage over them and their kin. This is no different than it has been for years at ND.

Now if Carlo were the violent drunk, I would be worried about his suroundings.

Tommy and Carlo were both in the wrong especially with the way they went at the officers, but you're right. The past couple of years the Indiana excise police have been ridiculous in South Bend. The one large annual student celebration/party of the year was cancelled Blue and Gold Game weekend because excise cops were called in advance.

SBPD is an organization of idiots and scumbags that have vendettas against ND students, just like the majority of South Bend residents. I'll keep Rees in my prayers. F*ck the police.

Until you actually need them. I wish that every person that ever made this statement was cut off from police help.

Cops in college towns suck. I agree. But that's a little excessive.

And think of what kind of attitude you'd have if you dealt with, not only criminals, but drunk, immature college students that think they're 10 ft tall and invincible?

Guys, I've been an ardent hater of Rees, but you have to keep that on the field! At this time I feel the same way I feel about any ND student that gets arrested by those lazy pieces of donkey $hit at the SBPD. "oh what, there's a robbery in process? Nah let's go bust that ND party and ignore the IUSB kids doing crack at their party".

This is hilarious because that's EXACTLY what is said when people DO need them.... and then they fail to do their job.

So all of them do?

There are FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
more cops that do good things (save lives, lock up bad guys) and do their job, than those that don't.

Again, I get the frustration. When I was 21 in college, I didn't like them either...but then, something magical happened...

Meh. It's crazy, ever since I stopped visiting other team's free message boards, this sh!t bothers me less and less. Matter of fact, I'm surprisingly not pissed at all about this. 2 years ago I would've been furious, embarrassed, ticked that I have to defned these guys on message boards, etc etc etc. Now that I'm all growed up, it's really not a big deal to me.

The facts will come out, and then I'll react. I've known from in-laws living in South Bend how the cops there are, so I'll never rush to judgment on these types of things.

One thing that is disappointing is fans saying that they are happy that it is Rees. That's just chickensh!t and just plain wrong, written by people who have never done sh!t for the university, unlike Tommy who has done nothing but give his all and worked his tail off for ND, despite his physical limitations.

If Tommy and Carlo are guilty, they should be punished. But until I hear the facts, then I'll just focus on the NBA playoffs and the May evaluation period...

Really? Didn't think you'd drop this low. Love how people think they have it figured out.

Meh, if we are talking about black eyes...why weren't we calling for Floyd's head?! Let's be real with ourselves...I don't believe anyone is saying we should be pitying Rees...both sides realize that he should be punished for his actions. However, if Tommy performed like Jimmy...not a single one of you would be doing a happy dance and that's what i feel is wrong. I have been calling for a new QB for over a year now, but my only concern is that this young man gets a 2nd chance with the university, even if that means he never plays another down for the football team...That is all.

I feel terrible for Rees, I hope its not true, I hope he gets another chance, etc., etc. But, there is no need to lecture people on moral equivalence. It's not necessarily true.

There are real differences between apparently assaulting a police officer and a DUI. Assault is intentional behavior, while a DUI is wreckless behavior. People are entitled to think one inevitably deserves a different punishment than the other.

I can understand the argument that a DUI is worse, since the potential consequences to innocent third-parties are worse. But it is not a given that Floyd would have remained on the team had his third offense been assaulting a police officer. I think he would have been expelled, which shows you right there that people can see this differently.

To be fair, it's not just college kids that act like they are 10ft tall and invincible when they are heavily intoxicated. I have seen many of grown men that act in the same manner.

But we gotta show these kids who is the boss right?

My house was broken into twice and those dip$hits did nothing. they were too busy busting underage drinkers TWO HOUSES AWAY! They know it's an easy bust. you don't see Ann Arbor cops doing this $hit.

Also, it was talked about earlier and im on my phon...but SBPD will be aggressive for no reason at all...i was going to my gf's house my senior year and was doing 6 over the speed limit...had my car searched, and after stating that all that was necessary and that i was a student at ND, i ended up being slammed against the police car getting slapped with handcuffs...That being said, still gotta keep your cool...but let's not act that a badge gives you the right to abuse your power

I have never in my life had a problem with a police officer when I have followed the rules. Ever.

Fact is, if you're underage and drinking, it's against the law and there is a chance that you may get a ticket.

That has nothing to do with the cops. If you have a problem with the LAW that's one thing, but the cops are out there to enforce the laws.

There are far worse crimes, I agree. But if there aren't any worse crimes going on...well.....

I guess if someone provided proof that there was a robbery going on, or murder, at the EXACT time that Rees and Carlo were getting arrested and that the ONLY cops avalible were the ones arresting them and they couldn't get to the other more important crime...I'd see your point.

Serious question. How much time have you spent in South Bend? Because everyone I know that has spent a considerable amount of time in South Bend have a negative view of how their police force handles Notre Dame students. I have no problem with Denver police, but I agree with all negative comments regarding how SBPD handles their business.

I may have never have been blessed enough to do something for ND but I sure as hell did something for this country. I still serve my country as law enforcement. Quit making excuses for Rees. Give his all? He plays football at the greatest university in the land and is getting a top notch education for free. Gives his all...smh

Please. All of you who are defending SBPD I'm guessing have never lived in South Bend. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that. But you just don't get it.

I am thankful and grateful for the law enforcement I've had everywhere I've lived in the country. Arizona, San Diego, Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland.... all cops who do their jobs. Yeah, they'll break up parties and address noise complaints (and I've been at a party that's happened at in every single one of those towns I've listed) but they HANDLE THEMSELVES PROFESSIONALLY! That's all I really ask. And they also protect the community.

SBPD? Just no. If your 21 year old daughter needed to use the bathroom and was instead told by a a fat Hoosier cop to "p*ss herself" you wouldn't be defending them. In my experiences with SBPD, they are complete joke and dishonor good cops everywhere else.

For those of you commenting about how noble the police are, you don't know unless you went to ND. I was at a party junior year where it got busted. There was a sophomore girl, terrified and bawling her eyes out, and those f*ckers just laughed. They take pleasure in busting ND students, I've seen it first hand.

Couple buddies ended up in a brawl at a Mizzou tailgate, which led to one of them knocking out 2 cops. He got a big fine and a crap ton of community service hours. Seeing how badly that affected his life at the time, I feel bad for Tommy. My buddy got off pretty easy if you ask me but Tommy may still lose his degree from ND. That will have a lasting effect on him.

Hopefully everything works out and he can grow as a person from this. If true, he deserves what comes his way, just hope he can remain with the school if anything. I could care less about if he remains on the team or not.

Curious, does ND have any sort of probation/second chance program? I have heard of schools letting students that may have ended up in a situation such as this, with no priors, earn a chance to redeem themselves by hitting a certain GPA, school volunteer work (community service), class attendance, etc. Albeit, none are anywhere near the level of ND.

Badge isn't to abuse your power but also dont know what they are being told. Such as a lookout that was passed around. Not an excuse to slam you or anything but you don't know what they were told.

Believe me, EVERY college town student/resident complains about this. SB isn't special.

Come down here to Texas (I went to Sam Houston State...yeah, the same town where they execute people and home of the #1 criminal justice program in the nation) and I'll show you what a REAL college town cop with an ego is.

All you mouth-breathing f-tards who are actually celebrating this should be ashamed of yourselves. I am among those who NEVER wanted to see Tommy start another game, but never would I want it to be because he wasn't beat out on the field. Let alone it being for personal reasons... You're all a black eye on our fan base.

You're really going to try and defend one of our players assaulting a cop? Really?

Same question for you that I asked pat (which he still hasn't answered), how much time have you spent in South Bend and in particularly on Notre Dame's campus on non game days?

I'm sorry but I find it really hard to feel bad for someone who messed up their life because they made a horrible decision with obvious consequences. If you assault a cop, you aren't a very smart person and don't deserve much sympathy.
