I agreed until hereI was as negative on Tommy two years ago as most everyone else, but I can now look back with a more open mind. When DC was in over his head, Tommy came in with a cool, confident head and lead this team to an 8-5 season. If he had last year's defense, that season would have likely been 9-3 or even 10-2. We should remember that Tommy was a sophomore. He is now a senior who has rebounded from his own off-field problems. Last season, he accepted his demotion and was there when the team needed him.
Every one of Tommy's on-field mistakes was due to over-aggressiveness. He wanted so badly to win that he sometimes tried to force throws. The team responded to Tommy's leadership last season, and they will do so again.
Would I like to have Golson back this season? Sure! Is the season over before it starts? Far from it. We have an experienced quarterback returning, one who bleeds blue and gold. Backing him up is a guy who nearly won the starting job a year ago. The quarterback position is one of the least of our worries.
"Notre Dame’s best quarterback, its best pure thrower, was on its bench all along—but Kelly knew he had that stout defense and knew he only needed so much offense. Golson gave him that extra run threat defenses had to account for, a tantalizing and too often mesmerizing possibility that blinds too many coaches all too often."
"...ability to throw downfield—with accuracy—with Rees. In all fairness, Rees never should have lost the starting job last year."
ummm, what?
It's frightening to think about what Kelly's W/L record at ND might be if not for Rees. In the parallel universe where he never commits to ND, Kelly might have been fired already. I can't think of any player who's done more for his team and still been vilified to the extent Tommy has.
To be honest, it would be pure poetry if Tommy starts in 2013 and leads us to our first ever BCS victory.

Is this guy on drugs. I'd play Zaire and see what he can do. He probably has more upside than Reese who is a good back up.
I just said in another thread but I'll say it here too.. Tommy has never started a game other than FSU in the bowl that we have lost and FSU game was a complete defensive breakdown! What's the reason for the hate? He does nothing but win games and It seems people just don't like him for 14 int's in his soph yr.. #alwaysconfused

Well...... there have been other games that Tommy has started that he lost.....and I'm not going to to pile on Tommy a whole lot, but you know what you get with Rees. That's precisely why he got beat out by EG last season, he is just soo limited in his athletic ability, and not his fault!! He's come in and done some good things out if the bullpen, but teams know he's limited and they will drop 7-8 in coverage and wait for him to make a mistake. Because against the really good teams, he's going to make them.......that being said, I don't foresee Malik being ready come August.....I just don't.......
Not gonna start an argument but If you could tell me the games he's started and lost other than FSU It would be news to me... I've always been a fan of this kid even wanted him over Crist before the South Florida fiasco in '11 but I've always been thrown down for believing a win is a win ugly or not!
He's not your ideal looking fundamental wise QB but he is our mentalQB that does nothing but win games since he's been here!
Yep, you're absolutely right! My argument is null but still feel as tho we win when he plays more than not...In 2011 it was Michigan, USC, Stanford and FSU that ND lost too when Rees started.

Not to be a Rees apologist here, and while a loss is a loss, I wouldn't pin the Michigan and USC games on Rees personally.
My biggest issue with Tommy in that USC game was that Tommy was the primary reason that Jonas got his knee blown out. Tommy threw a duck out into the flat that Jonas had to wait for and high point, leaving him totally exposed to the hit that blew out his knee because Jonas had to go up and get Tommy's floater. Direct cause and effect where if Tommy had a better arm, Jonas wouldn't have gotten injured.

To be fair, ND won a few of those games despite Tommy - see USC 2010.
If i remember correctly Tommy moved them down the field right before half in that game to take the lead....thought he hardly played bad for a true freshman in that environment personally
you're right 4 turnovers not good, but threw 2 TD's at key moments late in the first half to put us in position to win.
think this is a case where we're both right and we're both wrong![]()
To me, at ND, cut a quarterbacks games against everybody but ranked competition. Did he make his averages against his best opponents? It is simple.
